INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION

United States Cold Storage FacilityTwin Rails Industrial Park, Minooka, Illinois

In May 1996, AMS was retained todesign and install a refrigeration systemfor a new 100,000 s.f. Freezer/coolerdistribution center in Minooka, Illinois, forNew Jersey-based United States ColdStorage (USCS). Since that time we haveadded four (4) additions to the facilityand a second compressor room.

The facility consists of a blast freezer285,000 s.f. -10° holding freezer, 55,500 s.f. of convertible areas (either+35° cooler or -10° freezer) and a70,900 s.f. dock and staging area. Thetotal 13,350,000 plus cubic foot areawill store perishable food products fordistribution thought the country.

The system is a two-stage ammonialiquid recirculation design, consisting oftwo low-stage boosters and two high-stage compressors have the capability to

operate as single-stage packages to takeadvantage of low-load conditions. Eachcompressor package consists of rotaryscrew compressors, thermosyphon oilcooling and microprocessor-based controlpanels. There are 57 evaporatorsthroughout the facility with 24 of themlocated in the seven penthouses servingthe freezer and convertible rooms.

AMS’s project role included systemdesign, engineering, layout, construction,micro-processing based system controlwiring, thermal insulation, start-up andcommissioning. AMS also designed thesystem piping, vessels, ancillaryequipment and equipment layout.

AMS along with the general contractor,United Insulated Structures of Berkeley,Illinois, successfully completed theprojects on time and on budget.
