Storage Manager does not have a printed manual. A PDF file of the user’s guide is included with the application and on the Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Online Publications CD-ROM.

n Mac OS X does not support “hot swapping” media drives. Hot swapping refers to a technique used for replacing a drive by unmounting and replacing the drive without first powering it down.

c Avid recommends that you do not run any destructive write tests on any of your drives with Storage Manager unless instructed by Avid Customer Support. Running a destructive write test will destroy the data on the drives; use caution when running these tests to ensure that you don’t destroy important data.

Drive Striping on the Mac OS X Operating System

Use the ATTO™ ExpressStripe software to stripe drives on the Mac OS X operating system. The ExpressStripe software is installed in the following location:

Applications/ExpressStripe

The instructions for using the software are in a PDF file, Expressstripe.pdf, that is automatically installed along with the ExpressStripe application.

n You must be logged in as an Administrator to stripe drives.

c Do not use the Apple Disk Utility application (in Applications/Utilities) to stripe drives. If you use the Disk Utility application, you will not be able to view the drives if you move them to a Mac OS 9 system. Additionally, Avid’s drive filtering feature will not function properly, resulting in poor performance.

c Do not run a Mac OS 9 Avid editing application on the same system as Avid Media Composer and Film Composer v11.8, even if you boot into Mac OS 9. There might be conflicts between the system files used by the two applications.

Page 7: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

New Features in This Version

7

Using Striped Drives on Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.x Systems

The Avid Media Composer and Film Composer software automatically recognizes drives that were striped on Mac OS 9.x. You should be able to use these drives to edit and play video. However, if you move a drive that was striped on a Mac OS X system back to Mac OS 9.x, you cannot play video from the drives on Mac OS 9.x. If necessary, you can set up your Mac OS 9.x system so that it recognizes the drives and then copy media files from the drive to your Mac OS 9.x drives.

To set up a Mac OS 9.x system to recognize drives that were striped on a Mac OS X system:

1. Navigate to the following folder:

Applications/Avid Goodies/OS 9/System Folder/Extensions.

2. Copy the file ~~ExpressStripe_OS9_Enablr to the Extensions folder on your Mac OS 9 system.

3. Restart the Mac OS 9 system.

The system will now be able to recognize the striped drives. You can use the drives to copy media onto your Mac OS 9 drives.

Moving Striped Drives to Another System

In order to move striped drives to another system you need to be able to identify the drives that make up a particular striped set. On Mac OS 9 you could use the SCSI ID order when striping drives. On Mac OS X, the system does not use the SCSI ID, but uses its internal diskn name (where n is the drive number) when creating the striped sets. Use one of the following procedures to identify a striped set on Mac OS X:

To use Avid Storage Manager to identify a striped set:

1. Start the Avid Storage Manager application and choose View > Volumes.

2. Select the striped volume you wish to move and click Identify.

The system blinks the lights on the front of the drives that make up the volume.

Page 8: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

8

To use ExpressStripe to identify a striped set:

1. Start the ExpressStripe application.

2. In the opening dialog boxes, choose Utilities and then choose Benchmark.

3. Choose the striped volume you wish to move and click Start.

The system runs the benchmark test on the volume and shows activity on the front of the drives that make up the volume

Avid Unity MediaNetwork Support

This section lists the versions of Avid Unity MediaNetwork that are supported by this version. A workgroup environment means that you are using Avid Unity MediaNetwork along with Avid MediaManager.

This version supports the following versions of MediaNetwork:

• If you are not in a workgroup environment, use MediaNetwork v3.2, v3.2.1, or higher.

• If you are in a workgroup environment, use MediaNetwork 3.3 or higher.

Built-in RAM

Built-in RAM refers to the physical random-access memory installed in your Macintosh system.

On Mac OS 9.x systems, users were often required to allocate a specific amount of RAM for each application. This is not required in Mac OS X systems because the application can automatically acquire additional memory using the system’s virtual memory capabilities. However, it is still important to have enough RAM on your system so the application can acquire the memory when necessary.

Media Composer and Film Composer v11.8 systems require a minimum of 512 MB of built-in RAM, although 1 GB is recommended. New systems ship with 1 GB of built-in RAM.

To verify the amount of built-in RAM:

t Select Apple P menu > About This Mac.

The About This Mac window opens, listing the operating system and the amount of RAM installed on the system.

Memory kits are available from Avid for updating your existing RAM configurations. For details, contact your Avid sales representative.

Supported RAM Configurations

For a detailed description of the RAM requirements for a particular Power Mac G4 computer, see Apple’s specification database Web page:

RGB Keyer is not a Macintosh Feature

The effects guide lists the RGB Keyer as a supported effect. This is incorrect. The effect only works on Windows systems.

No AFE Export Support on Macintosh Systems

Avid Media Composer, Film Composer, and Media Station XL What’s New for Version 11.7 and the Help describe how to export AFE (Avid File Exchange) files. The information is incorrect. You cannot export AFE files from a Macintosh system. This is a Windows-only feature.

International Character Support

This document describes how to take advantage of international character support (ICS) on your Avid editing system.

ICS allows you to display and input characters in languages other than English. To use ICS on a Mac OS X system, use the standard English language operating system, install the language pack, and set the locale to your local language.

Page 30: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

30

n Avid Unity MediaNetwork v3.2 or later also supports ICS. For more information, see the MediaNetwork documentation.

n For the latest version of this document, see the International Character Support page on the Knowledge Center. For more information, see “To access the files on the Knowledge Center:” on page 34.

Choosing a Locale on an English Language Operating System

When you use this method, you typically instruct your operating system to allow you to choose between English and a specific locale such as French, German, Chinese, or Japanese. This allows you to input and display characters in your chosen language even though you are using the basic English language operating system.

To take advantage of ICS on an English language operating system:

Instruct your operating system to display the appropriate language in menus and dialog boxes and specify the language you want to use for keyboard layouts. Follow the instructions in “Non-English Character Support” on page 30.

Non-English Character Support

You can instruct the Mac OS X operating system to allow you to choose between English and a specific locale such as French, German, Chinese, or Japanese. This allows you to input and display characters in your chosen language even though you are using the basic English language operating system.

You need to specify the language in System Preferences and in the Get Info dialog box.

Setting the Language in System Preferences

In System Preferences, you need to specify which language should appear in operating system menus and dialog boxes. You can also add the language in which you want keyboard layouts and input methods to function.

n The Input menu is not labeled in the title bar. Look for the Flag icon in the title bar.

Specifying the Language in the Get Info Dialog Box

If you are attempting to enter text within your Avid application and you are not seeing characters from your language, you need to specify the language in the application’s Resources folder.

n You do not need to perform this procedure if all of your language’s characters appear correctly in the Avid application.

Page 32: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

32

To specify the languages in the Get Info dialog box:

1. Locate the Avid editing application on your Macintosh HD. For example:

Recommendations and Restrictions

This section describes recommendations and restrictions for using international character support on your Avid system.

Avid Supports English Plus One Locale

Make sure that your projects do not contain characters from more than one locale. String compare searches might not work correctly if you combine file names from different locales.

n Within a workgroup, all the systems on the network must be either English or one specific locale.

Entering ASCII Characters in Double-Byte Systems

The following restriction applies to customers who work on double-byte (two-byte) operating systems: If you use ASCII characters to name bins, projects, tapes, or other Avid elements, use single-byte characters. If you use double-byte characters, the characters might appear with extra space between them and the names might not be recognizable by other systems.

Operating systems that use a double-byte character system usually allow the user to choose between single-byte ASCII or double-byte ASCII characters. If you have a choice, use single-byte characters when entering ASCII text.

EDL Manager Does Not Save Diacritical Marks or Chinese Characters

You can display diacritical marks and Chinese characters in EDL Manager but you cannot save an EDL and reopen it with those characters preserved. This includes saving the file to the desktop or to an RT-11 formatted disk. If you plan to create and save an EDL from your sequences you must use ASCII names for tape names.

It is common for customers that use EDLs to copy the EDL onto an RT-11 formatted floppy disk. The RT-11 format has a very limited character set: A-Z (capital letters only), 0-9, space, and $.

Page 34: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

34

Characters to Avoid When Naming Avid Elements

Do not use the Japanese yen symbol in the ASCII character set. The system converts the symbol to a backslash, and this can cause problems with pathnames.

Do not use the Y-acute and Y-diaeresis characters. The system does not recognize the Y-acute character, and it can cause problems with file recognition. The system might not display the Y-diaeresis character correctly.

When you name a Mac OS X computer, use single-byte ASCII characters without spaces. The system uses the name in .pmr files (in the OMFI MediaFiles folder), and non-ASCII characters and spaces can cause problems with .pmr files.

If you plan to move projects between Macintosh and Windows systems, avoid using characters that are not in both the MacRoman and Latin1 (ANSI) character sets. The following two files on the Knowledge Center list the characters you should avoid:

• MacRoman Characters not in ANSI Encoding

• ANSI Characters not in MacRoman Encoding

To access the files on the Knowledge Center:

1. Go to www.avid.com.

2. Click Support, and then click Online Support.

3. Under the Avid Knowledge Center heading, click Documentation.

The Knowledge Center opens to the Documentation tab.

4. Click the International Character Support link.

5. The International Character Support page contains links to the HTML files that show the differences between the MacRoman and Latin-1 character sets.

n For the latest version of this information for both Macintosh and Windows systems, see ICS.pdf on the International Character Support page.

Page 35: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Hardware and Software Limitations

35

To display the characters in the HTML files correctly, you might have to set your Web browser to display characters in Unicode format.

To display characters in Unicode format on Internet Explorer:

t Select View > Encoding > More > Unicode (UTF-8).

Hardware and Software Limitations

This section describes hardware and software limitations for your Avid system.

Avoiding Undetected Timecode Breaks

Avid editing applications are designed to check for timecode breaks that are six frames or longer. This limitation prevents the application from erroneously detecting timecode dropout. To avoid potential problems when redigitizing, make sure the camera is operated in a way that prevents these timecode breaks.

For more details, see “Avoiding Undetected Timecode Breaks” in the White Papers section of the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center. To access the Knowledge Center, see “Accessing the Knowledge Center” on page 10.

Limitation When Using Consumer Decks or Decks Without Time-Base Correctors

This section describes some difficulties you might encounter when working with consumer video decks and tapes (such as VHS) or decks that do not provide time-base correction or stabilized timing on their outputs. Workarounds are described when available.

Page 36: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

36

Digitizing from Unstable Time-Base Sources

The Meridien subsystem used in Media Composer or Film Composer is optimized for use with modern, broadcast-quality VTRs that contain time-base correctors (TBCs). When presented with a stable input, the Meridien subsystem will digitize that video by using a high-quality, very-low-jitter clock reference. However, some sources do not include an internal TBC (including various S-Video decks or composite VHS, ¾-inch, or Hi8™ decks). In some cases, due either to the deck performance or the deck performance in conjunction with a particular videotape, the Meridien subsystem will not lock to non-TBC sources. As a result, the image might be unstable or might have reduced or missing color, or syncing might not be possible at all.

If you select the Consumer Source button in the Video Input tool, a wider bandwidth, more closely tracking time-base will improve the range of syncing capability. In this mode, the video input levels will be set by automatic gain control. Not all of the Video Input tool’s adjustment sliders will operate, and the video might be slightly softened, but the syncing in most cases will be more reliable and more stable. The overall image quality will not be as high as with normal operation.

n The availability of the Consumer Source button depends on the model of your Avid system.

If you continue to experience difficulty with a source that does not include an internal TBC, Avid recommends the video signal be processed through an external TBC for maximum image quality. For more information on time-base correctors, contact your Avid Reseller.

Green Line in VHS Video

Some VHS tape decks do not output the full 240 lines of video normally included in the VHS format. As a result, after you digitize from a device such as a VCR, a green line might appear at the bottom of the monitors in the Avid application.

Page 37: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

37

This line is at the bottom of the visible area of the picture, and is not seen in a standard consumer monitor in most cases. If you use the video in a circumstance in which the line is visible, you can remove it by cropping the bottom edge of the picture.

n For more information on cropping, see the effects guide or the Help.

Known Problems and Limitations

24p Projects

➤ 24p Projects: BWF files do not count correctly in an NTSC 24p project. The sync point is correct but the timecode does not increment with pulldown taken into account. The file should drop the :x2 and :x7 frames but it counts continuously instead. This will cause an EDL to be incorrect.

➤ Sony UVW 1800 does not always handle 24p Input/Output correctly. The Sony UVW-1800 deck sometimes misses the A frame at the Mark In point when digitizing or creating a digital cut with 24p material.

Audio

➤ Limitation: You might experience audio hardware underruns when you play back complex sequences in real time. The likelihood of this is higher if your boards are installed in an expansion chassis rather than in the CPU.

Workaround: Render some or all of your real-time effects.

➤ Audio Loop Play may not work from the AudioSuite Tool or from the Timeline.

➤ Digital audio scrub may fail in a sequence with mixed resolutions.

Page 38: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

38

➤ Limitation: Some third party plug-ins, such as the Ultimatte AdvantEdge plug-in may not be compatible with this release.

Workaround: Check with your plug-in manufacture to determine whether an upgrade is available.

➤ You might encounter audio hardware underrun errors when playing two streams of uncompressed video with real-time effects on systems with an Expansion chassis.

Workaround: Render any effects. This problem does not occur on systems without Expansion chassis.

➤ If you move a sequence between a Mac OS X Avid editing system and a Mac OS 9 Avid editing system, several AudioSuite™ plug-ins need to be deleted and recreated. This happens when you bring Mac OS 9.x plug-ins to Mac OS X and also if you bring Mac OS X plug-ins to Mac OS 9.x. It can also happen if you move a sequence created on an earlier Windows release.

➤ When moving from Mac OS 9.x or an earlier Windows release, the following plugins have this problem:

• Gain and Normalize plug-ins generate a DAE-7157 error.

• The Expander Gate plug-in generates a Not Found error.

When moving from a Mac OS X system to a Mac OS 9.x or an earlier Windows system, the following plug-ins have the problem:

• Compressor

• Limiter

• Expander-Gate and Gate

Workaround: Remove the AudioSuite plugin effect and recreate it.

➤ If you plan to use Pro Tools® on the same system as Media Composer or Film Composer, note that Pro Tools uses different versions of the following files:

Page 39: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

39

• DigiSystem_INIT — Stored in the Extensions folder

• Default AudioSuite plug-ins — Stored in the DAE folder in the System folder

If you plan to use Pro Tools on your Media Composer or Film Composer system, you will need to keep separate copies of these files and copy them to the correct location before you start the application. For the default AudioSuite plug-ins, you should keep separate copies of the entire DAE folder (located in the System folder).

After you replace the files, you must restart the system for DigiSystem_INIT to take effect.

AVX Plug-Ins

➤ Sample AVX Plug-ins are not automatically installed into the effect palette. There are several sample plug-ins in the Avid Goodies folder, including Checker, Color, Mx, and UI Test. You can install them from that location. See the effects guide for information on installing AVX plug-ins.

Color Correction

➤ If the Grid is turned on in the Color Correction monitors, the Grid continuously flashes when you adjust sliders and drag the position indicator.

➤ Dual Split does not work in Color Correction mode unless Show Graphics on Client Display is selected. Dual Split should work in Color Correction mode regardless of this setting. The default setting works correctly in Edit mode.

Workaround: Select Show Graphics on Client Display to use Dual Split Color Correction.

Page 40: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

40

Compatibility with Other Applications

➤ If you run Adobe® Photoshop® in the Mac OS 9 Classic Mode on your Avid system, the monitor does not display Photoshop menus.

Workaround: Use Photoshop 7 on the Mac OS X operating system.

Deck Control

➤ Limitation: The HDW-500 deck template does not create a frame accurate digitize when used with an HDW-F500 deck.

Workaround: When working with an HDW-F500 deck, use the generic deck template.

➤ Limitation: There is currently no Mac OS X driver from Videomedia for the V-LAN® device. This means that the application does not run in the Mac OS X operating system. The V-LAN software controls the VLXi® controller that allows you to connect and control multiple decks.

➤ Autoconfigure chooses the JVC® BR-D85U deck instead of the JVC BR-D750U deck.

If you autoconfigure decks when the JVC BR-D750U Digital S deck is connected, the system incorrectly chooses the JVC BR-D85U deck. If you double-click the deck in the Deck Configuration dialog box, the system displays a message warning that the deck configuration does not match the deck attached to the system. You can close the message box and then select the JVC BR-D750U deck in the Deck Settings dialog box. The system then functions correctly with the deck. However, the message warning that the deck configuration does not match the attached deck will reappear whenever you create a new project.

Page 41: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

41

Digital Cut

➤ 23.976 projects: If you create a 25-fps digital cut from a 23.976p project, the LTC may be incorrect and the audio quality may not be acceptable.

The LTC problem is limited to a 23.976 to 25-fps digital cut, but in general, audio quality cannot be guaranteed when doing a digital cut from a 23.976 project to 24 NTSC, 24 PAL, or 25 PAL. This is because the sample rate conversion required to speed up the audio lowers the quality.

Digitizing

➤ When editing directly to the TImeline from the Digitize Tool, if you digitize a short clip (4 seconds or less) with 2 or 3 second handles, the following error might occur:

Digitize aborted due to lack of pre-allocated disk storage.

Workaround: Digitize a longer clip or change the handles to one second.

➤ The Avid editing application may issue an incorrect error message when it reaches the filesize limit that you have set. For example, if you set the file size limit to 2GB in the Digitize settings dialog box and then begin digitizing, the system may display the following error message when the file reaches 2 GB:

Digitze aborted due to lack of storage space on disk ... Discard/Keep?

If you select Keep, the system saves the 2 GB file correctly.

Page 42: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

42

➤ If you are digitizing on-the-fly to a MediaNetwork Fibre Channel client or to local Fibre Channel storage, digitizing might fail with the following error message:

"An unidentifiable error has occurred while digitizing.Exception: VIDEO_PROD_INT_OVERRUN"

Workaround: Use the following procedure every time you want to capture a clip on-the-fly:

1. Hold down the Control key and click the Record button.

2. Release the Control key and click the Record button a second time.

➤ The error message “Digitize aborted due to lack of storage space on disk” might appear even when a workspace has available disk space.

Workaround: Try increasing the available disk space and redigitize.

➤ If you redigitize a duplicated clip, the system may delete the original media file.

Workaround: If you intend to redigititze a duplicated clip, unlink the duplicated clip prior to redigitizing it to avoid deleting the original media.

➤ Batch digitizing in a 24p NTSC project continues beyond the logged OUT point, and the system incorrectly adopts the pulldown setting from the batch digitized clip for subsequent digitized clips.

If you log a clip in a 24p NTSC project and then batch digitize the clip, the system keeps recording beyond the logged OUT point. The length of time the system continues recording after the OUT point is proportional to the length of the logged clip. The longer the clip, the longer the system continues to record after the OUT point.

Once you have batch digitized a clip, the system uses the pulldown setting from that clip for subsequent digitized clips. This might result in a digitized clip that has incorrect pulldown. For example, if you batch digitize a clip with C as the pulldown setting (C as the value in the Pullin

Page 43: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

43

bin column), a subsequent clip that you digitize will be created as if you had set the IN point on a C frame, regardless of where you actually set the IN point.

These problems exist only when you are batch digitizing video. Audio-only batch digitizing does not show the same errors.

Workaround: You can force the system to revert to the pulldown setting that you will need for subsequent digitizing by batch digitizing a short dummy clip with the appropriate pulldown setting.

➤ Due to a limitation with the Macintosh system, when “Optimize for batch speed” is selected in the Digitize Settings dialog box, the maximum number of clips that you can continuously digitize before a preroll occurs is 10.

➤ When recording or batch recording video and audio, IN to OUT, with video sync, you might receive the following message:

Exception: VIDEO_PROD_DATA_UNDERRUN or DIG_DATA_UNDERRUN

If the DVW A500P or PVW2800 deck is in PB/EE mode, “Stop” automatically switches from Playback to E to E (or passthrough) and causes a sync fluctuation. If the deck is in “Still” mode, the deck will remain in Playback and will not cause a sync fluctuation.

➤ If you are in VTR Emulation mode and the Avid system receives a Go To command from the edit controller, the Digitize tool will not initialize passthrough monitoring.

Workaround: Click the Timeline or Source/Record monitor, and then click the Digitize tool again. Passthrough monitoring will work.

Editing

➤ The Load Filler command on the Clip menu will not load filler into the Source monitor when the focus is on the Record monitor.

Page 44: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

44

Workaround: Click on the Source monitor before you use the Load Filler command. Note that you use the Add Filler command to add filler to the sequence in the Record monitor.

➤ The Client monitor goes black when you alter settings with the Digitize tool open. Open the Digitize tool. Enter Log or Digitize mode. With a tape playing or stopped, open a settings dialog box (such as Digitize Settings). Click OK, and the Client monitor goes black.

Workaround: If you are in Log mode, switch to Digitize mode, and then switch back. If you are in Digitize mode, switch to Log mode, and then switch back.

➤ You might receive an assertion failed message when you choose Refresh Media Directories from the File menu.

Workaround: You can click Continue in the message box to return to the Avid application.

➤ If you select the Scroll While Playing option in the Timeline Settings dialog box when working in 24p and 25p PAL projects, your system might display distorted video in the Record monitor.

Workaround: Deselect the Scroll While Playing option in the Timeline Settings dialog box. The Timeline Settings dialog box can be accessed by clicking Timeline in the Settings scroll list of the Project window.

➤ If you set the desktop to display custom patterns, the bins might become transparent and reveal the patterns on the desktop.

Workaround: Turn off custom desktop patterns or force a redraw of bins as needed.

➤ Partially covering the Source monitor with a group clip causes the Source monitor and the Client monitor to display a single frame instead of the grouped frames.

Page 45: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

45

Workaround: Remove the window that is covering the Source monitor and click the Source monitor. Both the Source monitor and the Client monitor display the grouped frames.

➤ The display of accent characters (set from the Apple Key Caps window) in the bin is different from the display in the Timeline.

➤ There might be a hue shift in certain colors when Avid graphics are being drawn on video. Since the graphics are not displayed during play, it will not affect the output of your digital cut and will be noticeable only when parked on a frame. Examples of Avid graphics include mark IN, mark OUT, and sawtooth marks denoting the beginning or end of a clip.

EDL Manager

➤ The source and output menus might not appear in a 24p or 25p project if there is no video on track V1. The source and output menus allow you to deliver various output formats by adjusting the timecode in an EDL.

Workaround: If the menus do not appear, make sure there is video on track V1.

➤ When you change options in EDL Manager, save as a template, and reopen the template, the options might appear to be selected incorrectly. The options are, in fact, set to your selection, but the user interface does not reflect them accurately.

Workaround: Close the Options window and reopen it.

Effects

➤ Effects: Rendering a segment effect with a nested submaster effect generates the following error:

Exception: Drv Fatal Error: 6 DMA_Buffers_Empty

Workaround: Step into the effect and render each track individually.

Page 46: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

46

➤ The following problems occur with AVX Plug-ins and transition effects:

• Transition effects do not unrender when the AVX plug-in on the segment is unrendered.

• If you apply a dissolve to a rendered AVX effect, the system does not automatically recalculate the behavior of the effect to extend around the transition point if necessary.

➤ Titles: Disabling DSK on a 2D system creates problems for playing titles - the system may only play the fill track when it encounters a title. Rendering the title does not fix the problem.

Workaround: Adjust any title parameter by plus or minus 1 and save the title.

➤ Title Tool: Re-editing a title with the Avid Title tool may cause the Undo/Redo list to disappear. You must restart the Avid editing application to restart tge Undo/Redo list.

➤ Playing real time effects on a system with a Genie 3D Effects board may produce video underrun errors.

Workaround: Render effects in the problem area for better playback performance.

➤ Copying and pasting tracking data in the Motion Tracking effect may cause assertion failed error messages.

Workaround: Add a new tracker before pasting in any information.

➤ Values entered into the Start Tracking From field might be applied to Update Threshold instead. This can cause the Update Threshold slider to change its value, even though the Start Tracking From field was the intended and highlighted field.

Page 47: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

47

For example, set a value of 10 for the Update Threshold slider and then insert the cursor into the Start Tracking From field; the field highlights and then you enter a value of 30. However, the Update Threshold slider is readjusted to 30 instead, and no value is entered or updated in the Start Tracking From field.

➤ The Tracker tool position indicator leaves artifacts in its path as it proceeds. It appears to clip out the window to reveal the desktop image or other windows behind the Tracker tool.

Workaround: Resize the window to refresh the image and remove the artifact.

➤ The Stamp parameter does not work in the Advanced Keyframe editor when using 24p NTSC or 24p PAL. Therefore, any Stamp effects created in the Effect Editor will not be promoted to the Advanced Keyframe editor either.

➤ Limitation: You might see aliasing artifacts on Picture-in-Picture effects whose parameters are unchanged for the duration of the clip. Your system automatically antialiases Picture-in-Picture effect images whose parameters change over the duration of the clip, but does not automatically antialias static Picture-in-Picture effect images (those whose parameters do not change for the duration of the clip). This behavior is designed to avoid the softening effect that can be caused by antialiasing a static image. However, some images might show aliasing artifacts and therefore require antialiasing to be enabled.

Workaround: If your system has the 3D effects option, you can turn on antialiasing for a Picture-in-Picture effect that shows aliasing artifacts by setting either of the Defocus parameters (Horizontal or Vertical) to any non-zero value.

➤ When you are working with two-field media and first activate the Scratch Removal effect, it might use field processing even though the Frame Processing button is selected. If the effect is using field processing, the Frame slider is calibrated from -10 to +10 and increments in fields as you drag it.

Page 48: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

48

Workaround: Click the Frame Processing button once to deselect it, and then click the Frame Processing button a second time to reselect it. The Frame slider is now calibrated in frames (from -5 to +5) and increments by frames as you drag.

➤ You can’t play a partially rendered effect if the precompute is split across different drives. This problem can happen if you attempt to render an effect to a drive that is low on disk space. The system displays a message stating that you might not have enough disk space to store the rendered effect. The message asks whether you would like to keep or discard the partial render. In this case, you should click Discard.

Workaround: Delete the rendered effect, and render it to a drive that has more available space.

➤ Limitation: Problem with unrendered 3D effects with drop shadows. At the start of an unrendered 3D effect with a drop shadow, there is a one-field delay before the shadow appears. This is a hardware design limitation and cannot be fixed for real-time play of an unrendered effect.

Workaround: Render the effect.

➤ Adding a Defocus effect to a title results in blocky artifacts. This problem occurs under the following circumstances:

1. Open a title in the Effect Editor and promote it to 3D.

2. In the Defocus pane, choose Key Only or FG & Key, and adjust the sliders to blur the key.

The title blurs, but the graphic channel beneath comes through as a blocky outline.

Workaround: Replace the graphic channel with a solid-color graphics image.

➤ When you play a sequence with several rolling titles close together, you might see an error message.

Workaround: Render the rolling titles, or try moving the titles further away from each other.

Page 49: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

49

International Character Support

➤ When using diacritical marks, exporting a bin as AFE with the default name may cause MediaLog to freeze. The resulting files have incorrect filenames.

Workaround: Don't use the default name when exporting a file as AFE, ALE or Tab Delimited. Rename the file to be exported in the Export dialog box.

➤ On an English OS, before importing files with diacritical marks that were created in and exported from an Avid editor on a French/Italian/German/Spanish (FIGS) OS, the files may display incorrectly. When this happens, the files cannot be imported. This happens more frequently with capital letters that have diacritical marks.

Workaround: Rename the files and import them. You can use diacritical marks in the renaming.

➤ You cannot save an EDL template file that contains Chinese characters.

➤ Limitation: When naming Avid elements, do not use fonts that have an "@" sign at the start of the font name. These fonts are used when intending to display text vertically and, with elements such as bin and clip names, will position letters/characters on their side.

➤ Limitation. When using a Changjie or New Changjie keyboard, some characters are displayed as question marks in the Avid application.

➤ If you are working on a FIGS OS and have media files that were created on an Asian OS using Chinese characters, as well as media files created on a FIGS OS, the Media Stream Manager (when you launch the Avid application) may display the following error message in a dialog box:

Page 50: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

50

Exception: CM_MOB_IN_USE An error occurred validating the media directory.

If the system displays this message, click Ignore All. If you click Continue, all of the media files will remain offline. If you click Ignore All, the Asian media files will be ignored but the FIGS media files will be read correctly.

➤ Limitation: If you cannot display Chinese or Japanese characters in the Avid editor, you may need to regenerate the asifont.map file under the Japanese or Chinese locale. Use one of the following procedures:

• Navigate to Program Files/Avid/<application name> and locate the asifont.map file. Delete the file. Make sure you are in the Japanese or Chinese locale and start the application again. The system will automatically create a new Japanese or Chinese asifont.map file.

• Or uninstall the application. Then reinstall the application under the Japanese or Chinese locale.

Note that the system uses the current locale to create the asifont.map file appropriate for that locale.

➤ When typing in user names, avoid switching between Roman and Asian characters. Depending on the number and juxtaposition of Roman and Asian characters, a warning may appear and unwanted user names will be added to the Avid users list.

Import and Export

➤ Import, Export AFE export takes much longer across a network than it does exporting to a local drive. When this occurs the Task Manager reports that the Avid application is not responding even thought the export is taking place.

Workaround: Export to a local drive and then copy the exported files across the network.

Page 51: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

51

➤ Import: If you have a sequence containing multiple imported files, a batch import may not automatically locate all the files if they reside in different folders. It may use the location of the first file for all the remaining files.

Workaround: When you perform the batch import, set the file location for each file manually.

➤ Imported matte keys are not displayed in the bin after performing a decompose on a sequence. This occurs even when the Import Clips box is checked in the Decompose dialog box.

Workaround: To batch import the decomposed matte keys, set the bin to display Rendered Effects.

➤ Creating an OMFI export using the Consolidate and Embed options may fail when you attempt export a sub clip that is associated with a larger master clip. The system displays an error that you have reached the 2GB file limit.

Workaround: Either consolidate the sequence first and then export, or cut the portion of the master clip that you want into a sequence, and then consolidate and export.

➤ The drive selection feature in the Import window does not work correctly the first time you change the media drive to import audio and video to the same drive. The audio file may be stored on the wrong drive. This also happens if you import a file with both video and audio - the audio may be sent to the wrong drive.

Workaround: Use Reveal File to determine where the file was saved. Then delete the file and reimport it to the correct drive. Or select the Import volume using the Media Creation tool.

➤ Export Limitation: There is no ABVB codec available for export.

Page 52: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

52

➤ If you attempt to export a sequence with 24 or more unrendered effects to QuickTime and have Same as Source selected, the following Exception appears:Unable to export bin

Exception: Movie export from procedures FAILED!, errcode:-115

Workaround: Render all the effects before you export.

➤ There is no available ABVB codec for export on this Macintosh OSX released editor.

➤ Importing AAF files might take longer than expected. When selecting AAF files for import, after selecting them, the beachball appears for a while before import begins.

➤ If the name of an audio file exceeds 26 characters, you cannot import it from an Avid Unity network, a CD, or any volume that is not part of your local storage.

Workaround: Copy the file onto one of your local hard drives and then import the file into the Avid editing application.

➤ Pict sequences created on older systems (both Windows and Macintosh systems) may not import on a Mac OS X system. When the problem occurs, the system displays the following error message:

Exception: ImportHIIP::ReadSamples - '_image' is NULL after attempting to load animation frame.

Workaround: Import the files onto a Windows system and convert them to another file format, such as jpeg. Then import them onto the Mac OS X system.

➤ If you created PICT export templates in a previous release (before Mac OS X), they may not work on Mac OS X.

Page 53: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

53

Workaround: Create a new template using the Options button in the Export As dialog box.

➤ QuickTime reference movies created from sequences that include filler do not play correctly in the QuickTime Player. The player might continue to play black frames after the end of the filler material or might play all gray or all white frames. Playback problems can occur whether or not the Flatten Video Tracks and Fill Spaces with Black options are selected. The Info window in the QuickTime Player displays what appear to be incorrect frame rates.

Workaround: Perform a video mixdown on the sequence before you create the QuickTime Reference movie or use actual black video instead of filler to create the black segments in your sequence.

➤ OMF cross-platform export of crawling titles causes a blue background to appear. If you export an unrendered crawling title from an Avid for Macintosh system to an Avid for Windows system (or vice versa), the color of the title text is changed and the title background is blue.

Workaround: Render the title before export, or re-create title media after import.

➤ When you perform a batch import with QuickTime files, the Current Settings button in the Batch Import dialog box shows the OMFI tab instead of the Image tab.

Workaround: Use the Import Settings (in the Settings scroll list) to set up the batch import. Then perform the batch import as usual.

➤ The first file of an imported PICT sequence might be corrupt when you import the sequence to Media Composer This problem occurs when you import the sequence to Media Composer on a Macintosh system.

Workaround: If you experience this problem, import the sequence starting with the second file of the sequence.

Page 54: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

54

➤ Clip names longer than 32 characters are truncated when imported in a log file.

If you export a log file with clip names longer than 32 characters, and then reimport the log file, the system changes the clip names. Each reimported clip name consists of the first 32 characters of the original clip name followed by the tape name.

➤ Insufficient memory errors might occur if you attempt to play media after importing a QuickTime movie with a resolution different from the native file.

Workaround: Exit and restart the application.

➤ Some unsupported file types might stall the system during import. If you try to import an unsupported file type, such as an .aud file (MPEG-2 audio file), QuickTime might take several minutes to analyze the file type. During this period, the system appears to be frozen. After several minutes a message appears, saying the file is not a supported format.

➤ Batch importing a duplicate of a master clip causes the original master clip to be offline.

Workaround: Unlink the duplicate before batch importing it.

➤ When you export a file larger than 2 GB, a system error occurs.

Workaround: Ensure that the file you are exporting does not exceed the 2-GB limit. If the error occurs during a video mixdown, try to mix down in smaller segments.

Internationalization

➤ When you launch the Avid editing application on the Japanese OS, the system clips off the bottom line of the Avid splash screen message.

Page 55: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

55

➤ Limitation: The following problems apply to clip names in the Timeline that use diacritical marks or kanji/kana characters:

• The default font used for clip names in the Timeline does not display diacritical marks or kanji characters on a Macintosh system. The default font (Geneva Clone) is optimized for ASCII characters only.

• If you bring a Macintosh project with clips names containing diacritical marks or kanji characters onto a Windows system, those clip names will display as the font named Webdings when they appear in sequences loaded into the Timeline.

Workaround: Use Edit > Set Font and change the timeline's default font to a font other than Geneva Clone or Webdings.

MediaLog

➤ When you select a project file with a name containing characters incompatible with Windows file name requirements, a DISK_INVALID_NAME exception occurs. You must force quit MediaLog (press Option + Command + Escape), and then restart the application in order to select a different project.

Windows compatible file names cannot include any of the following nine characters: /\ : * ? ” < > |

MediaNetwork

➤ The Media tool in a shared post production workgroup might not read an updated .mdb file properly and therefore the Media tool might not display updated clips. When you restart the editing application, the Media tool will display the appropriate clips.

➤ Mac OS X clients that save or create files on an Avid Unity workspace using the Finder or any other application create associated resource forks of 1K in length for each file. These resource forks are visible to Mac OS 9 and Windows clients. While these files are harmless, you can get confused with the data file when navigating using Explorer (Windows) or

Page 56: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

56

Finder (OS 9). When accessing the project using a Windows client, the Project window will display all the resource forks. Attempting to open the resource fork will result in an error message:Unable to open file._(name).

Files saved by the Avid editor application during digitizing, or bins created in shared projects, will not create resource fork files.

➤ When you are viewing a large number of files in the Media tool over Avid Unity mounted shared storage drives, closing the Media tool might lock up the editing application. You might have to force quit the application.

➤ A Macintosh client on an Avid Unity MediaNetwork system might not recognize an ALE file that was created on a Windows NT® or Windows 2000 client. For example, if you export a group of clips in a bin as an ALE file from a Windows NT client onto an Avid Unity MediaNetwork workspace and then try to import the same file into a Macintosh client, the system might display the following error message: “the file format of 'filename.ale' is not supported for import.”

Workaround: This happens because the Avid Unity file system does not save the resource fork information associated with the file. To fix the problem with the file:

1. Copy the file from the Windows NT client to a network drive not connected to Avid Unity.

2. Copy the file to the Macintosh client, and perform the import as usual.

➤ QuickTime reference movies with added filler might not be shared correctly on an Avid Unity MediaNetwork system. This can happen if you use the Add Filler or Load Filler commands to add filler to a sequence and then export the sequence as a QuickTime reference movie. The QuickTime reference movie points to the filler data on the local drive, which prevents the movie from being encoded with Avid ProEncode.

Page 57: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

57

Workaround: Create a filler file (using Adobe Photoshop or another application), copy it to an Avid Unity workspace, import it as a clip, and use it for filler. In this case, you cannot use the Add Filler or Load Filler feature.

➤ Projects might not close correctly if a bin has been opened over the network and a network error occurs.

If you open a bin on another system and modify its contents, and then a network error occurs where you can no longer access that bin file on the networked system, the application might not exit because it cannot save the bin. You might have to force quit to exit the program.

MetaSync

➤ MetaSync Manager may generate an EXC_BAD_ACCESS error when you exit the application. This is a Java error. The Mac OS X system creates a Java crash log and stores the error in the log file. The crash does not adversely affect already created and saved enhancement files.

➤ MetaSync does not run correctly with the Java Runtime Environment v1.4. See “MetaSync Support” on page 25.

➤ Limitation: MetaSync Manager and MetaSync Publisher are not supported on a non-English Macintosh operating system.

➤ MetaSync Manager: Clicking the Check Links button in an enhancement window spreadsheet can change the spreadsheet to solid gray. When you open an existing enhancement file, the system opens a spreadsheet window that contains the Check Links button. If you click the button, the spreadsheet window may turn solid gray.

Workaround: This is a user interface refresh problem. Click the button again to to toggle the screen back to normal.

Page 58: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

58

Multicamera

➤ The Source and Record monitors flash frames when selecting camera shots in MultiCamera mode.

If you have a grouped clip and sequence loaded in the Source and Record monitors with the Quad or Nine Split enabled in MultiCamera mode, the monitors flash when you click in any of the four source clips. The Source monitor momentarily changes to a full-screen image of the first frame of the clip, and the Record monitor flashes to another frame. When you click in the Timeline, the Source and Record monitors flash again.

➤ If you apply a Timewarp effect on a multicam sequence, all source clips display the effect.

➤ Multicam The image freezes in the monitor when the initial mouse shuttle speed is greater than 30fps (NTSC) and then the mouse is moved to less than 30fps.

Workaround: Stop mouse shuttle by pressing the space bar, then begin shuttling again. Or mouse shuttle to a reverse speed and then back to a positive speed less than 30 fps.

➤ Multicam: Selecting the Hide Video option in Multicam mode generates an Assertion error message. Don't use the option for this release.

Play

➤ When using the mouse to shuttle less than 30 fps in MultiCamera mode, when the current shuttle speed is greater than 30 fps, the image freezes in the monitor and the position indicator freezes in the Timeline. For example, if you go into mouse shuttle mode, increase the shuttle speed to greater than 30 fps and then attempt to change the speed to less than 30 fps, the image will freeze.

Page 59: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

59

In PAL projects, the speed would be 25 fps. In 24p projects, it would be 24 fps.

Workaround: Stop mouse shuttle mode by pressing the space bar and begin mouse shuttle again in a speed less than 30 fps. Or, shuttle with the mouse to a reverse speed and then back to a positive speed less than 30 fps.

➤ VTR Play Emulation Problem: If you cue to the next or previous frame using the Go To command on the edit controller, a search error appears on the edit controller.

➤ Playback from a bin is not smooth when the bin is displayed in the Bin monitor. If a bin is displayed in the Bin monitor, and you set a bin to Frame view or Script view and play a clip, the clip does not play smoothly.

System

➤ If you receive the following message when starting the Avid system, the Avid application will not start: “Exception occurred while initializing Media Stream Manager, exception: MSM no directory specified.”

Workaround: You need to delete two files as follows.

1. Locate the Avid application folder and open it.

2. Double-click the SupportingFiles folder

3. Double-click the OMFI MediaFiles folder.

4. Select the msmFMID.pmr and the msmMMOB.mdb files, and then press the Delete key.

5. Restart the Avid application.

Titles

➤ In a sequence with rolling and non-rolling titles, the color may shift and you could encounter a DMFA error or a Video underrun error when you play a rolling title. This usually happens on systems with a Genie 3D effects board.

Page 60: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

60

Workaround: disable 3D effects when you render the title.

➤ Recreating titles may cause a “Region Too Large for Apple” error.

Workaround: Quit Title Tool without saving title. Relaunch Title Tool, recreate titles and save titles.

➤ Playing a rolling title with soft shadow in a Pal 1:1 sequence with multi-track effects can generate DMFAs or video underruns.

➤ If you have a sequence with two streams of uncompressed video and a rolling title with a soft shadow, it might cause Display Missed Frame Advance (DMFA) or audio hardware underruns.

Workaround: Render items in the sequence depending on the complexity of the sequence. It might be less time consuming to render track V2 than to render the real-time DSK on track V3.

➤ When trying to save a title to a bin from the Title tool, the message “Region Too Large for Apple” might appear.

Workaround: If this condition occurs:

1. Delete some elements from the title.

2. Try to save the title again.

3. Quit and then restart the application, and try to create the title again or a portion of the title to use with the saved title.

User Interface

➤ When playing a sequence you will see a flash if you click a window other than the active window to stop the play. For example, if you begin playing a sequence with the Record monitor active, and then you click the Timeline to stop the play, the first frame flashes.

Page 61: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Known Problems and Limitations

61

Workaround: When playing a sequence use the same window to start the play and to stop the play. For example, if you start playing when the Timeline is active then click the Timeline to stop the play.

➤ Limitation: The keyboard shortcut on the Timeline Fast menu for Show Track > Hide Selected is incorrect. Its shows that the shortcut is Command+H but Command+H is a Mac OS shortcut that minimizes the application.

Workaround: Choose the command from the Timeline Fast menu rather than using the shortcut.

➤ A black flash occurs if master clips and sequences are being loaded with the position indicator parked on a frame that displays “Draw on Video.” Frames that display “Draw on Video” would be IN point, OUT point, Home, or End.

Workaround: Move the position indicator to a frame that does not display “Draw on Video.”

Workgroups

➤ If you want to check a sequence that contains MetaSync tracks into MediaManager, manually check the sequence in as an AAF file.

➤ Workgroups Digitize: If you set the Digitize tool to TC input, Digitize without an IN point fails.

Workaround: Use either IN to OUT or just IN.

➤ Workgroups: Playing a sequence in Multicam mode in an AECIFS environment may produce DMFA errors or Assertion Failure errors.

➤ You might receive the following error message while dragging media from Media Manager into your bin:Unimplemented operation file: coresw\ame\compman\ASequence.c line 963

Page 62: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Version 11.8 Release Notes

62

Click Continue from error message. If you click abort, you might get a runtime error and lose all your unsaved work.

n You should be sure to do a final update after all chunking operations have completed to ensure that all such errors in sequence data have been corrected.

Workaround: After you click continue, perform a bin save and then restart the editor application.

➤ Workgroups and Effects: If you perform a desktop checkin of a Photoshop file with layers, your Avid editing application will not import the file correctly. The system displays an Access Violation error.

Workaround: Copy the file onto a local drive or onto a Unity drive without checking it out through MediaManager.

➤ Workgroups and 24p Titles Crawling titles checked out of MediaManager display errors in a 24p project. When loading the clip into the source or record monitor the system displays an Exception error.

Workaround: Modify and save the title on the second system and the title will be usable again. If the crawling title is rendered prior to checkin, then it can be checked out on another client. If not, then it needs to be modified and resaved on the client that checked it out.

➤ Workgroups: If you perform a Modify or AutoSync operation on a clip, the changes may not be reflected in MediaManager during an auto save, bin close, or manual save of the bin.

Workaround: Manually check the clip into MediaManager.

➤ Workgroups: OMF imports of QuickTime with alpha look and play online but they show up as offline in the Timeline. This is evident if you choose Offline Clip Color from the Timeline menu. There is not a problem with the media. Offline Clip Color is showing incorrect information in this case.

Page 63: Media Composer and Film Composer v11

Technical Support Information

63

➤ Workgroups: If you perform a video mixdown to a workspace that is almost full, the Avid editing application may quit unexpectedly with a –36 error.

Workaround: Make sure you have enough space available before you create media on a workspace.

➤ Workgroup and imported graphics: Checking out an OMF file containing a pic sequence with alpha generates an unsupported resolution error.

Workaround: Quit the Avid editing application, restart the application, and create a new project. Checkout a valid version of the imported graphic into a bin then open the bin containing the original clip that had the problem. The clip should be online now.

➤ Workgroups: If you save a copy of a bin in a shared MediaNetwork project, it is not automatically checked into MediaManager. The new bin appears to have the correct information but if you save and close all bins and then reopen the copied bin it may be empty.

Workaround: Re-check the media into the second bin. This allows you to access the media but MediaManager is still reflecting incorrect information because the original bin is now tracking information in the second bin.
