vation program is the prevention of hearing loss itself.

Employers should test new employees before any exposure at

or above action level to determine a valid baseline audiogram,

which subsequent tests can be compared to. After the baseline

audiogram has been obtained, employers must provide

follow-up audiometric testing annually for each employee

whose exposure is at or above the action level.

development and recovery of babies in neonatal units and the

NICU. Babies in intensive care are particularly sensitive to high

noise levels; if a baby’s sleep is disturbed by sudden noise, it can

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that monitors the heart’s electrical activity.

In an ECG test, the electrical impulse made while the heart is beating are recorded and usually shown on a piece of paper. It also records any problems with the heart’s rhythm, and the conduction of the heart beat through the heart, which may be affected by underlying heart disease. An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is a portable

electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially

life threatening cardiac. It is able to treat them through defibril-

lation– the application of electrical therapy which stops the

arrhythmia and allows the heart to re-establish an effective

rhythm.

Uncorrected, these cardiac conditions can rapidly lead to

irreversible brain damage and death. After approximately

three to five minutes, irreversible brain/tissue damage may

begin to occur. For every minute that a person in cardiac arrest

goes without being successfully treated (by defibrillation), the

chance of survival decreases by 7 percent per minute in the

first 3 minutes and decreases by 10 percent per minute as

time advances beyond ~3 minutes.

While chemical splashes workplace are often rare events, the

outcomes can be catastrophic. Washing the affected area

quickly is imperative, but injuries can still persist – even when
