1FIRMWARE CODE DOWNLOAD

PROCEDURE

Introduction

The MegaStar radio's RFU and SPU controllers contain programmable firmware. A Windows based utility for downloading the firmware is supplied on a CD-ROM and provides the following two modes for downloading:

1. Boot Time - Downloads locally from an IBM-compatible personal computer (PC) connected to the MegaStar radio.

2. Runtime - Downloads remotely from a PC connected to a MegaStar radio to any other MegaStar radio accessible through the SCAN network.

Each RFU and SPU controller can store two versions of software, which are selected using the Windows based utility. (The default version is the one used by the controller in normal operation.)

The code on the CD can be used to replace either (or both) of the stored versions of code with a newer (or older) version.

When the code is downloaded from the CD, it will automatically be copied to the correct location on the controller.

In Boot Time downloads, the code is downloaded into the default memory bank. Downloading to the default memory bank overwrites the contents of that memory bank.

For Runtime downloads, the controller will prevent the new code from being loaded into the default memory bank.

ADDRESS

Introduction

MegaStar radio site addresses, which reside on the SPU Controller, can be assigned or changed using FarScan. For each changed address, a site information file must be created, otherwise, that address will not be recognized in the network.

Each MegaStar SPU shelf requires a unique address.

Refer to the FarScan for Windows online help file or manual for more detailed information on the following procedures.

Changing the SPU Address

1. Make sure the FarScan computer is connected to the radio network and start FarScan.

3PORT BAUD RATE

Introduction

A factory default baud rate is stored in the MegaStar firmware (IDEEPROM) and is always available for use. It can be used as a saved or current baud rate. The current baud rate is the baud rate currently being used. It may or may not be a saved value.

The saved baud rate is the baud rate saved to the firmware. If power loss occurs, this baud rate will be restored. If you want the current value to run after a power loss, it must be saved to the firmware.

Confirmation is needed whenever changing any baud rate settings to insure the baud rate selected is correct. If a baud rate is confirmed, but not saved, and a power loss is experienced, the baud rate will revert to the saved setting.

Setting the Options

The MegaStar Inventory program provides some options (under “Options” in the menu bar) that enable you to control how the inventory is conducted by the software. You can change the following:

• Number of Trials - The number of times the software attempts to inventory each unit.

• Wait (sec)... - The length of time in seconds (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5) that the software will wait for the system to respond before reporting unit information.

• Show Data - If this option has a check mark next to it, byte data for the inventoried unit's IDEEPROM will be displayed. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window to view all the data. The data shown is a result of the last trial.

• Log Errors - If this option has a check mark next to it, errors encountered during inventory will be recorded in a log which can be saved to a file. Refer to Saving Inventory Data.

The Inventory program settings are saved in a file called “ideeprom.ini” in the program’s working directory. The next time you open the Inventory program, the inventory window will appear, ready to use.

To revert to the factory default settings, simply delete “ideeprom.ini.” A new file will be created the next time changes are made to the Inventory program.

Troubleshooting Information

“No Response” Message

If a “No Response” message appears after sending an inventory request, check the following:

• Make sure the computer interface cable is connected to the computer and the Master Equipment.

• The delay may be too short. Select “Options,” “Wait” and increase the delay to 5 seconds.

• Make sure a valid Target equipment number is entered.• The item being inventoried may have failed. Use FarScan to determine

the nature of the failure.

“Unknown Response” Message

If an “Unknown Response” message appears after sending an inventory request, the computer's COM port is set incorrectly. Do the following:

1. Select “Comm.” The following window will appear:

2. Configure the settings for your computer's COM port.

3. Click “OK.”

GLOSSARY

Baud Rate

A data-communication-rate unit used similarly to bits per second (bps) for low-speed data; the number of signal-level changes per second (regardless of the information the signals contain).

BER

Bit Error Rate.

Bit Rate

The rate at which data bits are transmitted over a communication path, normally expressed in bits per second (bps); not to be confused with the data signaling rate (baud), which measures the rate of signal charges transmitted.

Communication Port

A serial-data, RS232-, RS423-, or RS422-standard port.

Coordinating Site

The opposite end of a hop.

FarScan

Farinon’s Remote System Control and Alarm Network surveillance software.

FLASH

This non-volatile storage device (similar to a computer’s hard disk) stores the entire code. It can store two different versions of the code simultaneously, which is useful when an upgrade is provided. The user can download the upgrade and still retain the original version of the code.

Front Panel

The faceplate or cover of a unit or assemblyHop

The span between a transmitter and a receiver.

Harris Stratex Networks MegaStar® 155 PX 1+1

Page 42: Megastar Manual Software Utilities

Glossary-2

Hot Standby (HS)

A protection scheme in which two transmitters and/or two receivers are simultaneously processing the same information (traffic); where one of the transmitters and/or receivers is connected to traffic while the other is on standby.

IDEEPROMs

Factory programmed memory chip in each field-replaceable unit that stores inventory data (part number, serial number, date code) and, if applicable, electrical characteristics (such as oscillator frequency).

IM

Instruction Manual.

Loop-Protected System

A transmission network arranged in a loop, with loop traffic protection. (This system is referred to as “ring-protected” in the MegaStar manual.)

Loopback

Feeding back a transmit signal into the system’s own receive circuitry for test purposes; loopback can be equipment or line.

Loopback Plug

Connector wired to loop back transmit lines into receive lines of a signal.

Manual Mode

In FarScan, the operation mode in which the protection-diagnostic system is manually controlled.

Monitored Hot Standby (MHS)

See "Hot Standby."

Mux Assembly

Assembly that contains multiplex and demultiplex circuitry.

Nonprotected

Without protection (see HS).

Rack Profile

The arrangement of equipment in the equipment rack.

Radio

A terminal that includes a Signal Processing Unit and a Radio Frequency Unit.

Radio Terminal

A single MegaStar radio.

Radio-to-Radio Repeater

A dual terminal consisting of two radio terminals.

Radio-to-Optical Hybrid Repeater

A repeater consisting of a radio and an optical or DS3 interface.

RAM

In order to execute a program, it must be loaded into RAM. The content of FLASH can be programmed so that at power up a specific version of the code is executed. This is called the default code.

Ring-Protected System

A transmission network arranged in a loop, with loop traffic protection. Also called “loop-protected”.

ROM

Read only memory semiconductor chip contains BOOT code that performs the initialization necessary to make basic hardware checks (memory, power supplies), provides limited functionality (Miniscan), and prepares the hardware to accept the main body of software that gives MegaStar its total functionality.

Signal Processing Unit (SPU)

The card cage assembly which contains the interface, processing, and control boards for the MegaStar.
