Mekong QuiltsNon-Profit Organisation

Mekong Quilts is a non-profit income generating project of NGO Mekong Plus. Founded in 2001 Mekong Quilts offers sustainable employment t o p o o r w o m e n a n d s u p p o r t s c o m m u n i t y development programs in remote rural regions of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Mekong Quilts specializes in high quality, hand crafted bedcovers. Quilt styles range from traditional to contemporary using patchwork, piecing and various stitching techniques.

Our StoryQuilting is perfect as an employment activity, as it requires a small investment to begin with and is labour intensive. Thanh Truong, a Vietnamese dentist in Ho Chi Minh City recognized these qualities and through her passion for quilts, began the program with just 35 women. The first quilts were sold Tupperware-style in the homes of friends, volunteers and supporters. The initial stages were slow. Opening a shop was an essential step required to grow the business, thus providing more employment opportunities for women.

In 2005, the program expanded slightly with a total of 45 women employed. Since then, the project has not looked back. In 2012, there are now eight shops in Vietnam and Cambodia and over 340 women in full time employment. The quilters receive training, a fair

Profits generated from the sale of the quilts are reinvested into the community through Mekong Plus. This includes programs such as scholarships, agricultural training, micro-finance programs, etc. As a result, not only does your support through the purchase of products help to provide sustainable employment to women but the profits from the sale of the quilts also benefit the poor communities in which they live.

Every item purchased from Mekong Quilts is a gift that gives twice.

wage and employment benefits such as health insurance, wedding and baby bonuses and bereavement payments. They are also able to work in a safe and comfortable environment close to their families. Many of the women who work for the project have doubled their income, which ensures their children remain in school.

Currently, Mekong Quilts employs women in communities northeast of Ho Chi Minh City (Duc Linh, Tanh Linh and Ham Thuan Nam in Binh Thuan Province) and Long My (Hau Giang province) in the Mekong Delta. Mekong Quilts also offers employment to Cambodian women located in Rumdoul (Svay Rieng province) near the Vietnam / Cambodian border.

Our QuiltersOur quilters are women from very poor rural regions. Before quilting, they would travel to fields far away from their homes in search of work, leaving their children at home.

The women work in groups. Each group is supervised by a group leader who is responsible for their team. Group leaders handle the allocation of work, provide a working space and travel regularly to Ho Chi Minh City to deliver products, collect new orders and go through the quality checking process. The group leaders have become real entrepreneurs with huge responsibilities, managing up to 25 quilters at a time.

Besides the economic benefit to the women, Mekong Quilts through parent NGO Mekong Plus provides training on health and hygiene, group management and assistance to the women.

Our Quilts

There are a variety of quilts (100% cotton or silk) to choose from which include different colors and themes, ranging from contemporary (Harmony range) to traditional (Craftmanship range) and Indochina-inspired designs (Mekong range).

All of our quilts are hand stitched and take between one and four weeks to make which will then be checked thoroughly to meet the high standard of quality for which Mekong Quilts is known. Mekong PlusMekong Plus, from Belgium and France, is the parent NGO of Mekong Quilts. Its aim is integrated community development focusing on the poorest, earning less than half a dollar per person per day. Mekong Plus only works with a community when everyone is involved, thus enabling them to lead low cost, sustainable actions with everyone’s participation.

In Belgium and in France, teams of volunteers and supporters organize several events every year to raise funds and awareness for the programs.

The actions are varied including micro-credit, agricultural techniques, training of para-veterinarians, protection of the environment and forests, development of employment through handicraft, fair trade. The programs located in 2 provinces and 5 districts in Vietnam and in one province in Cambodia cover more than 500 villages with a total of half a million beneficiaries.
