Flowers are a treat for the senses and it’sworth taking time to work out exactly how youcan use them to best effect. Beforeyou rush down to the florist, take aminute to think about location, colour and theme.

Make sure that you clean yourvase thoroughly before adding theflowers, using bleach or Miltontablets and a bottle brush. It’s vitalto use flower food if you want yourbouquet to last: you can make asolution yourself using a quarter ofa teaspoon of bleach, twotablespoons of lemon juice and one tablespoonof sugar in a quart (1136ml) of warm water.

If you are creating a table centrepiece, thegolden rule is that the colour of thearrangement should harmonise with thetablecloth, napkins and crackers. A crowdedtable might look better with just one or twostems placed in narrow bottles, arranged alongthe middle.

One of the most distinctive aspects of a

traditional, seasonal arrangement is the use ofdeep green foliage, but remember that

evergreen branches have woodystems that can sometimes bereluctant to absorb water. Youcan give tough stems a headstart by plunging them into amug containing a couple ofinches of boiling water andleaving them for a minute to“sear”.

Flowers can be more expensiveat Christmas time, but you cancreate some fantastic

arrangements by supplementing a few choiceblooms with evergreen leaves and decorations.A festive floral arrangement provides us with asimple reminder that spring is on its way, sothis year don’t forget to say “Happy Christmas”in the language of flowers.

If you’re tempted to take up flower arranging asa hobby, then you’ll find some helpfulinformation at www.nafas.org.uk, where you’llbe able to find out about local clubs, coursesand classes.

Planting Trees and Shrubs by Pippa Greenwood

Trees, shrubs and woody climbers in particularare often a very good buy at this timeof year so take a look at yourgarden and see what you couldadd, or perhaps considerremoving that plant which hasnever quite done what youhoped….and replace it withsomething new.Planting trees and shrubs iscertainly not difficult, but it is oneof those gardening tasks aboutwhich ideas seem to change regularlyand it can be confusing if you read widelydiffering opinions and ideas. So whatshould you be doing if you have justdecided to add a few trees to yourgarden?

A good planting hole or pit is essential, you should make sure that it is at leastseveral inches larger than the currentspread of the roots of the tree or shrubthat you want to plant. For years the advice has been thatplenty of bulky organic matter should beincorporated in to the hole and the mixture

with which you back fill it. Investigations nowsuggest that this may not necessarily be thebest way of going about things: make theplanting hole too ‘cosy’ and the tree’s rootsmay be inclined to stay in the hole and not

venture out in to the surrounding soil. However, if you garden on a

very sandy, poor soil, a well-prepared planting pit whichincludes bulky organic matter

such as garden compost will helpto reduce the risk of drying out,and increase the chances of thetree growing away well. Similarly, provided the organic matter isincorporated over a good enoughsized area on a heavy soil, I think itdoes help to improve aeration anddrainage around tree roots, especially if you incorporate somegrit too.

To tease or not to tease the roots?I’m a teaser every time, havingseen thousands of trees fail

because their pot-bound roots never movedout in to the soil properly, if at all.

Planting depth is important too, so do makesure that you cover the roots, and only theroots, with soil. Even the compost level in thepot is often too deep, so start from scratch ifnecessary. Laying a straight cane over the topof the planting hole will help you to gauge thecorrect depth more easily.

Then of course there is staking. I suggest onlydoing this with large trees, apples on verydwarfing rootstocks or if the site is extremelywindy, as a tree will get tougher and moreresilient if given a chance to move aroundslightly and so form a strong trunk. If you dostake, short stakes at an angle are nowregarded as best, and do use a good qualitytree tie, properly fitted so that the tree’s bark isnot chafed.

Finally, remember that aftercare is essential, regular, thorough watering will be neededduring dry weather, especially for the firstcouple of years after planting. If you don’t getthe aftercare right, both the plant and all thattime and effort (and enthusiasm) can easily belost.

Since it’s launch, the new look and feel of Windows 8 has not been widely liked. So much sothat Microsoft rushed out a major update (Windows 8.1) to appease the Windows 8 ‘haters’.This was still missing one traditional feature, the good old Start Button at the bottom left of thedesktop screen. That handy little button that gave easy access to shutting down the computer, your list of programs and your personal folders. It might seem like a small thing but without thisfeature I have heard stories of customers buying a new Windows 8 computer, switching it onthen being unable to switch it off…... Well there is a solution.

A program called ‘ Start Menu 8’ supplied free of charge by IOBIT.com.There are alternatives but this is the one I recommend. To find this, follow these steps :

Go to iobit.comSelect ‘Products’ at the top of the page & select ‘Start Menu 8 for Windows 8’Press green ‘ Free Download’ buttonThe download should beginIn internet Explorer press ‘RUN’ or in Google Chrome press ‘startmenu-setup’ and then runPress ‘YES’ to the User access control promptPress Next, then Accept, then NextSelect ‘Custom Install & untick everything followed by NextUntick all on the next screen then click FinishThe start menu program options will now startPress ‘Start Button’ on the left, Press ‘Classic’ then ApplyPress the cross at the top right of the screen

That’s it! You now have a traditional Start Button that will now appear every time you start yourcomputer. If you don’t feel happy following the above, I will be happy to help. Just call me atComputer SOS on 01664 431139 or 07894352517.

Reflection overthe last 10 yearsand how thingshave changed?

The Melton Messenger will be celebratingits 10 year anniversary soon, so well doneto Debbie and her team for an excellentpublication. With this in mind I thought it an opportunetime to reflect back over some of thestatistics and changes that have affectedall our lives over the last 10 years.

I have noted below 10 of the often talkedabout figures when we reminisce:

Petrol £3.67 per gallon in 2004, now £5.73per gallon, a 56% increase

FTSE 100 closed at 4564 (25.10.2004),closed at 6388 (24.10.2014), a 39%increase

ISA limit £7,000 in 2004, £15,000 in 2014,a 114% increase

Mortgage interest rates (Halifax standardvariable) 6.75% in 2004, 3.99% in 2014,41% decrease

Annuity rates 7.352% in 2004, 5.626% in2014 (age 65, level payment), a 23%decrease

Average house prices in the East Midlands£141,966 in 2004, £149,714 in 2014, a 5.5%increase

Average pension fund value at retirementin 2004 £28,656, in 2014 just £36,800, a28% increase

Inheritance tax nil rate band in 2004 was£263,000, in 2014 it is now £325,000, andincrease of 23%

Number of people aged 16+ unemployed(not just those claiming jobseekersallowance) in 2004 was 1.43m and in 20141.97m people, an increase of 37%

And finally in 2004 you started to payincome tax if your income was over £4,745;in 2014 it is £10,000 (this excludes agerelated allowances)

In isolation some of this data looksextremely positive and some negative. Theyshould be read in context of the widerpicture.

As Mark Twain once said ‘’there are lies, damned lies and statistics.’’

The data quoted here has been sourced fromThe Office for National Statistics, Gov.ukwebsite, Halifax, Nationwide and tax briefs.

Who would'vethought(and it still amazesme) that theMelton Messengerhas now beenrunning for tenyears….?

I started the Messenger after having a badexperience with a tradesman and thought thatthere was a need out there for a handy littledirectory listing local servicesrecommended by realpeople. All this was wellbefore any of the customerrated websites had beenformed. I started out byknocking on neighbours’doors and asking them if theywould mind telling me whatservices they had used andwhich had done a good job!

Over the years we haveendeavoured to maintain theMessenger’s ethos ofincluding businesses andservices that have beenrecommended by previouscustomers. And thank you to all of you who wehave spoken to and who have helped us to dothis. We still encourage readers to feedback on theservices featured in the directory and we willpass this back to the advertiser concerned.Nine times out of ten this is positive, but if wedid get lots of readers complaining about aparticular service we do reserve the right totake them out of the directory - thankfully thishas only ever happened on a handful ofoccasions.

Our main aim has always been to providereaders with a handy, interesting and usefulpublication and to encourage them to use localbusinesses.Over the past 10 years we have kept up todate with the changing technology with ourwebsite, online magazine, social media and

mobile app. I still however firmly believe thatthere will always be a place for a qualityprinted local directory.

Readers may remember the very first issue weproduced in December 2004, rather differentfrom what it looks like today. It’s thanks to ourlocal contributors and writers that has helpedkeep the publication interesting and relevant.Back then we only distributed to one thousandhomes, today its almost 14,000. I must alsomention here my fantastic distribution teamwho reliably deliver the Messengers throughyour door every other month. It started outwith friends helping me deliver and now most

of their own children havegrown up and taken over!

I am proud to say that lots ofour advertisers have been withus many years and I wanted totake this opportunity of thankingthem all for their continuedsupport. In particular are thosewho were with us in those firstfew months and who havestayed in every single issuesince! You may recognise some oftheir original adverts opposite.

Finally, last but not least, a bigthank you to you the readers.By using the Messenger to

source your local services you are not onlysupporting the local economy, but keeping theMessenger going too. We are not run by theCouncil or part of the local paper, as somepeople may believe, but an independentcompany run solely by yours truly. Please dofeel free to contact me if you have anysuggestions on improving the Messenger, anyfeedback for any of our advertisers orrecommendations on who we should beincluding. For more details please see our websitewww.meltonmessenger.co.ukOur full contact details on page 3.

To celebrate our 10 year birthday wehave an extra special prize for you to winin our Find Sam Competition on page 66!

Organise Your Christmas SpendingWith a little forethought and planning it ispossible to get to the New Year withfinances intact, withoutcompromising on thecelebrations. Here are some ideas.

Saving money inChristmas ClubsChristmas Clubs arebasically savingsschemes that help youspread the cost ofChristmas, with members making smallmonthly deposits that cannot be withdrawnuntil November or December.Savings may be exchanged for vouchers to bespent in certain stores, or a catalogue is sentout from which you choose your gifts. They are a good place to put money aside, although some people might find them toorestrictive when it comes to buying presentsand prefer to accrue interest on their savings, however paltry the amount. This gives thefreedom to shop where you like, and withdrawsome of the money if you spot the perfectpresent before December. Is it worth trying a cash back site?Cash back sites like Quidco and TopCashback offer a percentage cash back onevery purchase made. A directory ofparticipating online retailers is listed on thesesites, which pay a referral fee to the cash backsite for directing shoppers their way. Apercentage of this fee becomes the cash backyou receive. Both Quidco and Top Cashback offer two tiersof membership. The basic account is free ofcharge, with the ‘premium’ account offeringadditional services for a £5.00 annual fee. Arange of payout methods is available, including having your money paid into a bankaccount, PayPal account, or choosing anAmazon Gift Card. It’s a good idea to move your money as soonas possible as it won’t be protected should thecash back company go into administration. Also consider telling family and friends whatyou are doing, as the sites sometimes offer areferral fee for new sign-ups. Quidco currentlyoffer a £2.50 bonus for each referral whoearns £5.00 cash back themselves.A good time to use creditPurchases of £100 to £30,000 are

automatically protected under Section 75 ofthe Consumer Credit Act. This means that

if the trader goes out of business, orthe product is faulty and you can’tget your money back from theseller, your credit card companyprovides a full refund. For larger Christmaspurchases, it’s a good idea touse a credit card for this reasonalone as long as theoutstanding balance is repaid as

soon as possible. It offers avaluable level of protection that isn’t availablewith a debit card. Some credit card companies also offerpurchase protection, so that if an item is lost orstolen they will refund you in full within acertain period of time - often 90 days. It’sworthwhile keeping your receipts and creditcard statements for at least this length of timein case of any problems.Careful when buying gift cardsWith so many household names going intoliquidation it’s not always a good idea to givegift cards at Christmas. If there is any doubtsurrounding the ongoing status of a company,it might be safer to give cash or a cheque in aChristmas gift envelope instead. If the company does go into administration youmay find that they don’t have to honour theamount on the card. This is a bit of a grey areathough, and is largely dependent on the policyof the administrator.Vouchers and discountsVoucher codes and deals can be found atvarious websites includingwww.moneysupermarket.com andwww.moneysavingexpert.co.uk with savings tobe made on a wide range of products fromelectronic gadgets to jewellery and perfume. Some codes offer free postage and packing,so it’s worth shopping around on the internetfor these deals.0% credit cards for when it’s too lateIf it all goes wrong and you’re dreading thecredit card bill, look for a 0% interest creditcard and transfer the balance if you can. Thisspreads the cost interest-free over a period oftime, usually between 6 months and 2 years. There is generally a transfer fee of around 3%of the balance, and you’ll need to pay it offwithin the 0% interest time limit to get the mostbenefit.

42Recognise any of the following? Then perhaps its time for a change…Sleeping with your make-up onNever - no matter how tired you are - go to bedwith any trace of make-up still on your face.Mascara that hasn’t been removed will quicklydry-out your eyelashes, making them brittle andweak. Last night’s foundation will clog yourpores, leaving you prone to nasty break-outs.

Using heat stylers on your hair everydayIf you straighten, curl or blow dry your hair everyday you will be causing damage to your tressesthat could result in split ends, dried-out lengthsand tired, dull-looking locks. You don’t have to say goodbye to your much-loved heat styler altogether. Instead, you shouldensure that you use it more sparingly and don’tforget to spritz your hair with a good quality heatprotecting product first.

Using make-up that is past its bestAlthough your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breedingground for bacteria. And over time, if you don’tkeep a careful eye on your products, you canend up suffering from some seriously nasty eyeinfections, skin irritations and blemishes.

Mascaras, liquid eyeliners and lip glosses shouldbe thrown away every 3 or 4 months.Foundation is ok for around 12 months, as arelipsticks and eyeshadows.

Overlooking your eyebrowsOver-plucked brows are as bad as over-grownbrows. Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyesand by creating the right shape you can instantlylift your face and draw attention to your eyes. You can’t beat professionally sculpted brows, your beautician will assess your needs andleave them looking perfect.

Not keeping skin safe in the SunYou’ll be well aware of the need for sunscreenwhen you’re lying on the beach, but you mightnot realise that you need to use it every day. That’s because skin-damaging UV rays arepresent even when the sun isn’t shining. Thesun is one of the biggest factors in prematureageing.

SmokingThe free radicals in cigarette smoke break downcollagen, slow the skin’s ability to heal and makeit look sallow, dull and lifeless. Smoking inhibitsthe blood supply that keeps skin looking healthy.

43Thinking of contact lenses? Nowadaysthere’s a range of options to correct pooreyesight whatever your prescription.Contact lenses may be more convenient thanglasses and both rigid and soft versions allowoxygen on to the eye. This keeps the eyehealthy and allows them to be worn forextended periods. Toric lenses to correctastigmatism and bifocal lenses are availabletoo.Soft contact lenses are made from a plasticpolymer with high water content. They’reeasier to adapt to than rigid lenses. Daily ormonthly disposable versions decrease thechance of infection, while non-disposablesare cleaned every day and changed yearly.Pros: Comfort; no loss of peripheral vision.Cons: Easily damaged or polluted.Rigid gas permeable contact lenses aremade from silicone polymers.Pros: No loss of peripheral vision; bettercorrection of some eyesight problems thansoft lenses; durable.Cons: Less comfortable and harder to adaptto than soft lenses; reduced risk of infection(due to lack of water content). Before making any decisions, seek advicefrom your optometrist or eye consultant.

Maintain your training regime throughout thewinter months with some helpful tips fromMelton Sports.1 Eat rightPasta, soups and baked potatoes are greatfoods as they provide a slow release ofenergy. Keep energy levels topped up with asports snack/bar and make sure you keep wellhydrated. You may not feel thirsty but yourbody uses up a lot of water through respirationin order to maintain it’s temperature.Replenish these fluids and electrolytes withdrinks such as Lucozade Sport and have arecovery drink after your session.2 Layer upGive your body a hug by wearing a base layer. This traps the heat in and the fabric works tomaintain your body temperature by aiding theevaporation of sweat. When it gets really coldwear a layer that blocks the wind, gloves anda hat or headband. Be careful not tooverdress, less is more. As a rule of thumbdress for 15 to 20 degrees warmer than itactually is.3 Extend your warm upYour body warms up more slowly in coldweather, especially first thing in the morning.Put your kit in the airing cupboard overnight orin the clothes dryer for a few minutes beforeheading out. And don’t forget to do somedecent stretching or run up and down thestairs a few times. Remember it may still take10 to 15 minutes of running or riding beforeyou are completely warmed up and hit yourstride.4 Be safe, be seenTry to exercise during daylight hours andabsorb what sunshine there is. If it’s dark out, wear bright, reflective clothing. Lights are a

must for cyclists and a headlamp or flashingarmbands for runners. Don’t forget to lookahead for potential hazards, everyone’s visiontends to be reduced in winter.5 Train with a friend or groupMake your fitness sessions safe and social. Ifyou’ve arranged to meet someone it’s harderto make excuses and cry off.6 Try out new routesRunning or riding the same old routes canbecome a chore so try out some new ones.Go off road and hit some trails if you can asthey are good for building strength and power. If you’re working away or having a weekendbreak take your kit with you. Start off into thewind, this way you’ll have the wind at yourback on your way home and avoid a chill afteryou’ve been sweating.7 Increase your intensityIf you’re on a tempo run or ride mix bursts ofspeed work into your session, but take everyfourth week a bit easier. Time out and rest isimportant too.8 Set a specific goalSet some goals and/or enter a competition.Knowing you have to train for a race or hit amileage target or fitness goal is a realmotivator. Reward yourself when you achieveit, then set another one!9 Go to the gymWhen it’s bone-chillingly cold or icy outsidetreadmill running, a spin cycle class or turbotrainer or gym session/activity class is a goodway to stay fit without risking injury.10 Change quickly afterwardsChange quickly when you finish exercising asyour core body temperature will drop as soonas you stop. Try to drink something hot, thenrelax . . .

Ten years ago people were beginning touse the internet for shopping but thishas rapidly accelerated since that time. The law has taken time to catch up.

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 as amendedand the Supply of Goods and Services Act1982 will apply to goods and servicespurchased. Any goods purchased (even ifbought in a sale or with points or vouchers)must be of satisfactory quality, fit forpurpose and fit for a specific purpose, (ifstated), be as described and must last areasonable length of time.

This year, the Consumer Contracts(Information, Cancellation and AdditionalCharges) Regulations 2013 provided newand additional consumer protection, particularly Distance selling, in addition tothe legal rights you have if buying goods orservices in a shop.Distance selling is selling and buyinggoods, services or digital content withoutface to face contact, for example, on line, mail order, phone or television. Becauseyou do not actually see the goods or service

before you buy them, you have extra legalrights to protect you, (although exceptionsinclude gambling, financial services, transport services etc.).

Under the Regulations you must be givenclear information before and after thepurchase, and expressly agree to anyadditional payments etc. You have a right tocancel your order within a 14 day cooling-off period (subject to exceptions includingpersonalised goods, fresh produce, urgentrepairs, etc.) In addition goods must besupplied within 30 days, unless otherwiseagreed, and you may get a refund if itemsare not delivered as agreed. rooms? Given their fabulous decorativepotential, they may also work as part of aliving area too.

Just how a tiled area looks –whether it’s a whole wall or asmall splashback – depends ona variety of factors. Their colour, pattern and texture are mostimportant, of course, but size(from huge slabs to tiny mosaic)matters and shape also plays apart. While most tiles are squareor rectangular, other shapes areavailable and can createcomplex patterns that haveenormous impact. Your chosenlayout also makes a difference, whether it’s a simple grid, anoffset design (also known asbrick bond), herringbone, pinwheel or random. Will you

add borders or mix two or more patterns? Howwide apart will your tiles be spaced? And whatcolour grout will you choose? Tiling may notbe as simple as it first seems – but it cancertainly be rewarding.

51Timber panellingWood panelling keeps heat in and noises out,and is great for disguising wonky walls. Morethan that, though, it has fabulous warmth andcharacter. Choose fielded panelling for classicfeel, or simple tongue and groove for thatcosy, country look. Leave natural or paint toco-ordinate with the rest of the room.MirrorA wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheetof mirror will reflect light around and instantlymake the room seem bigger. The larger themirror, the thicker it needs to be, so it’s often agood idea to get professional help to attach itsecurely.Polished plasterA centuries-old Italian technique, also knownas Venetian plaster, involves applying severalthin coats of plaster and polishing with wax.The finished result boasts a lovely depth ofcolour and can resemble marble, stone orsuede.FabricChoose your fabric, line it, stretch it, andstaple it to battens fixed to the walls. There’sno way around it: this traditional technique isexpensive. It looks amazing, however, and ishelpful in insulating against cold and noise.

Composites and laminatesThey may seem dull, but in fact sheets ofplastic laminate or solid composite havedecorative potential. As they are waterproofand require few joins, they make an especiallygood choice for bathrooms.LeatherCostly but eye-catching and incrediblyluxurious, leather-clad walls possessenormous character, while their patina, likethat of a quality shoe, will develop over time.Apparently, they are even sound- and fire-retardant.CorkCork sheets and tiles offer many appealingqualities, from being warm and soft to thetouch to having insulating and soundproofingbenefits. What’s more, they are highlyenvironmentally-friendly. A range of moderncolours, patterns and textures is available.Sheet metalFancy an unusual wall installation? Then optfor sheets of metal – steel, copper oraluminium, say. Finishes include differenttextures, laser-cut designs or even designerrust and, depending on their patina andarrangement, the end result could be eitherovertly industrial or sleek and upmarket.

One of the more unusual newgadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb,a bluetooth speaker that’s also anLED light bulb. The £59 device iscontrolled via an iPhone and Android app thatenables you play music and, er, turn the lighton and off.

This year’s hot technology is thesmartwatch - of which LG’s GWatch R is one of the nicest. TheAndroid-compatible smartwatch islikely to be keenly priced. Sadlythe Apple smart watch is not beingreleased until later in 2015.

How about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0(£224) is a smartphone-controlledquadricopter, a flying drone that can streamhigh definition video back to the owner’sphone or tablet. There are drones to suit allbudgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 toones costing over £600.

GoPro cameras are small high definitioncameras that can be attachedto almost anything. We’veseen GoPros strapped to bikehelmets, animals, remotecontrolled cars and even tomusical instruments.Expect to pay from around £199.

62The Tree: ‘The Giving Tree’ by ShelSilversteinWhat better kind of spruce this festive seasonthan ‘The Giving Tree’. Loved by children andadults alike, this is a story about a little boywho grows up under the branches of a tree, and continues to take and take throughout hisyears into adulthood. If you don’t cry when youread this then quite frankly, you must have aheart of stone. It’s such a simple and touchingstory about our capacity to love and it’s perfectfor some fireside snuggling up with whoeveryou have staying with you this Christmas. The Gift: ‘The Gift’ by Cecelia AhernIf you ever thought there weren’t enough hoursin the day then meet Lou Suffern, a man whois constantly needs to be two places at onceand who is struggling to keep up. He finds itimpossible to really ‘be’ in the present, whether it’s at work or at home with his family. One day he meets a homeless man calledGabe and, taking pity on him, sorts him outwith a job in the post room. But there’ssomething not quite right about Gabe. Healways appears to be in more than one placeat once. It’s a bit ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ formodern times, and goes to prove that as wesuspected, time really could be the greatestgift of all.The Weather: ‘Let it Snow’ by John Green,Maureen Johnson and Lauren MyracleHere are three touching and romantic storiesthat all stem from one incident, as a young girldecides to ditch the stranded train she wastravelling on and heads out into the blizzard. The tales then take place over the followingfew days as the residents of Gracetownstruggle to cope with the Christmas Eve storm.Written by some of today’s best-selling authorsthey are like three perfectly wrapped littlestocking fillers. The Family: ‘A Proper Family Christmas’ byChrissie ManbyWhenever someone tells you this is what theywant, they mean the nostalgic Christmas card, cookie cutter image. They don’t mean thearguments, tears and recriminations thatusually go hand in hand with the festiveseason. This is the story of two clashingfamilies, brought together by the need to helpthe Buchanan’s seriously ill daughter, Izzy. The matriarch, Annabel, was adopted and soneeds to find her own biological parents to seeif Izzy can be saved. It sounds like a tear-jerker but it’s a warm and fuzzy one forChristmas.

Firstly congratulations to the MeltonMessenger on its 10th birthday!

I thought it would beinteresting to look back towhat we were up to onthe farm 10 years ago.Like most farmers wekeep a day to day diary ofthe main farm events –important managementinformation for individualcows like calvings andmedical treatment, butalso a brief note of theweather and main farmevents.

I’m writing this at the endof October and due to themild and dry weather, themilking herd are still grazing in the morningsand the late lactation cows are out at nighttoo. In 2004 we brought them all in on 20th

October which is really more typical. Thereare a handful of the same cows – some ofour older ladies were in the herd 10 yearsago.

Most years there is a very definite changein the weather in mid October whichrequires firstly that we get the wheat drilledby then and secondly that the cows come inabout a week later once they start making amess. This year we were delayed in drillingour wheat because the grass beingploughed out was so hard after that very drySeptember!

We had a TB test in 2004 – back then weonly had to test every 4 years. We nowhave to test annually as the disease hascontinued its spread and Leicestershire is inthe risky ‘edge’ area, although we remainTB-free.

Our milk price for the year averaged justunder 20ppl, this year although it is nowfalling fast, it will average around 30ppl, butlots of other costs have gone up too.

We have moved on a lotin terms of some of thetechnology we use withthe cows for heatdetection and the healthprotocols so that we arerunning a better herd andour heifer rearing is moreefficient. We have alsoimproved the wildlifevalue of the farmconsiderably, having beenin an agri-environmentscheme for a further tenyears. Thousands ofpeople have also had thechance to visit us overthat time too!

I wonder what the next ten years will hold.More extreme weather events undoubtedly– look back at the summer of 2007 and theflooding that we had then. More volatility onmilk and grain prices as we are increasinglyinfluenced by global markets. Perhaps inthe UK we will at last be starting to get agrip on bovine TB – or will some newdisease be the problem? Whatever thefuture holds, hopefully it will include afurther ten years of health and happinessand the satisfaction of farming.
