christmas hope for street lightsStreets lights on Brooklyn Road, Melton South, outside Coburn College, are expected to be operating by Christmas. The lights, installed as part of upgrades to the road in August, 2012, have yet to be turned on. A Melton council spokesman said: “Council is aware of the safety issues due to reduced street lighting . We are hopeful all issues have been resolved and Powercor will be able to commission the lighting prior to Christmas.” \

roads get some love Six problem roads and intersections will undergo repairs in Moorabool this summer. The council has nominated six projects to share in $1 million of funding from a state government country roads and bridges program. A total of $630,000 will go towards the reconstruction of Halletts Way in Darley. New asphalt for Clarinda Street and Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, will cost $125,000. Kerb replacement on Masons Lane, Bacchus Marsh, will cost $95,000 and gravel road re-sheeting on Doyles Road, Elaine , will be done for $80,000. Work to widen the shoulders of Old Melbourne Road, Millbrook, is a $45,000 project, and intersection improvements at Lerderderg Gorge Road, Darley, will cost $25,000. \

evacuation drill wins gong An evacuation exercise held in Blackwood has earned Moorabool council and the CFA a commendation at the Resilient Australia Awards. The council and CFA worked with police , Ambulance Victoria, the Australian Red Cross and government departments to co-ordinate the emergency drill, conducted on December 9 last year. \

tussock proves costlyFour Rockbank landowners have been ned a total of $2300 for failing to control serrated tussock on their properties. Department of Environment and Primary Industries biosecurity of cer Gerry O’Keeffe said serrated tussock was a highly invasive weed that caused signi cant damage to the environment . \

BRIEFSfears misplaced as festival proves right neighbourlyMOUNT EGERTON

A three-day music festival attracted about 350 funk, electronica, folk and rock music lovers to Mount Egerton at the weekend.

Hosted by non-pro t organisation Inca Roads, the festival featured 35 artists including Gold Fields, Northeast Party House, Willow Beats and jazz-funk band Animaux (pictured). Eight neighbours of the Yendon-Egerton Road property where the festival was held also attended.

e Weekly reported in October that several residents had expressed fears about the impact the festival would have on the area, citing noise and inappropriate behaviour as their main concerns.

A permit was granted a er councillors said they were satis ed with a revised re-safety plan.

Police said they were pleased with crowd behaviour. \ PM (S

walkers turned off the beaten trackTOURISM

A tourist track connecting Bacchus Marsh to Daylesford is in such a state of disrepair that maps of the track are no longer being sold.

e Lerderderg Track, an 80-kilometre stretch of the Great Dividing Trail that starts at Bacchus Marsh railway station, will be subject to a three-day audit early next year to determine how much work is needed to make it a major attraction for walkers and cyclists.

Hiker Darren Edwards has volunteered to assess the section from Blackwood into the Lerderderg State Park, with another volunteer to examine the stretch from Lake Daylesford to Blackwood.

Mr Edwards said the track had been treated like a bit of a ‘‘poor cousin’’ compared to other trails in the area, and there were fears the Great Dividing Trail Association was looking

to close it down. e audit will consider track alignment, conditions and signage.

“We’ll prepare a report for council, then petition for federal funding to get the track back up for public use,” Mr Edwards said.

Bacchus Marsh District Trails Advisory Committee secretary Colin Evans said

the path was not well de ned . “We need to raise awareness that we’re going to lose this important tourism feature if we don’t take action.”

Great Dividing Trail Association president Barry Golding said many

sections of the track had been battered by oods, bush res and a lack of proper

maintenance.“ e track needs to be of a good quality,

well marked and safe, and the dialogue between all relevant bodies needs to improve.”

Moorabool councillor John Spain said people were still walking sections of the track, but it needed ‘‘love and attention’’.

“ It needs a little bit of care and regular maintenance. I’d ask the community to step up and show their support.”

Mr Edwards said the track’s alignment, winding through the streets of Bacchus Marsh, was one of its downfalls. He suggested scenic areas such as Mackenzies Flat should be linked to the path.

“People who are interested in hiking aren’t looking for suburban streets,” he said. \

police drive home road safety plea

Police are urging drivers to be careful over the Christmas period a er three deaths on Melton roads in eight days.

Melton highway patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said while it wasn’t totally unusual to have a spate of serious crashes , the fatalities of late last month highlighted the need to take care. Six deaths have occurred on Melton roads this year.

Leading Senior Constable Edwards said drivers had to be more aware of what they were doing on the road. In many cases there was nothing police could do to stop collisions. “We could have police cars at every intersection and people will still make mistakes.”

Leading Senior Constable Edwards said extra police were already on Melton roads as part of Operation Summer Stay, which will have four phases between November 15 and January 5.

“We say this every Christmas – plan your trips, take your time and manage fatigue. We are hoping drivers listen to these warnings and that we can be fatality-free for the rest of the summer.” \

fewer burglaries, but assaults on riseCRIME

Assaults have underpinned increases in crime in Moorabool and Melton .

Police gures released last week show total crime in Moorabool increased 10.4 per cent in the 12 months to September – from 2476 o ences to 2734.

Total crime in Melton over the same period was up 5.2 per cent (from 8330 cases to 8767).

Moorabool’s Inspector Brendon McCrory said police were placing a major focus on crimes against the person (up 9.7 per cent, from 352 o ences to 386) . “ ere are planned operations being conducted in high-risk community locations, with speci c attention being paid to licensed premises,” he said.

Inspector McCrory said there had been an increase in intervention orders, many initiated by police on behalf of victims.

While drug o ences increased 52.7 per cent (from 74 to 113), he said this was a good sign. “ We’re catching the o enders. It covers a wide gambit of drugs. While our main concern is methamphetamine, we also see a lot of cannabis and ecstasy.”

Melton’s Acting Inspector Tim O’Connor said police were encouraging people to report family violence, with a specialised unit available to provide support. Family violence

reports in Melton rose by 66 , from 501 to 567. Acting Inspector O’Connor said total crimes against the person ( up 15.5 per cent) had been a ected by the rise in assaults, which increased 17.4 per cent. “It’s displeasing to see they are up this high,’’ he said.

“Of the assault gures excluding family violence, on a lot of these occasions the people

have been known to each other or are from the prison system.”

Acting Inspector O’Connor said he was pleased with reductions in property and residential burglaries, which he attributed to residents working with police. \

still prime pokies targetMELTON

More than $100,000 was lost on gaming machines in the Melton electorate every day, on average, last nancial year .

A new Monash University report released last week shows that $39.1 million was spent on the electorate’s 407 machines in the 12 months to June.

Of the venues located in Melton City and Bacchus Marsh, the most money was spent at Mac’s Hotel, with 82 machines collecting $10.9 million .

Outside the electorate, a total of $22.3 million was spent at e Club and WestWaters Hotel in Caroline Springs .

Local MPs, including Melton’s Don Nardella, were last week presented by lobby group Poker Machines Victoria with a full-sized cardboard poker machine highlighting the money spent in their electorates, as Monash researchers push for stronger action against problem gambling.

Dr Charles Livingstone said there was a correlation between gambling losses and the number of gaming machines in disadvantaged areas .

He said there was a need to reduce the

size of gaming venues and restrict the amount of money people can gamble with to make gaming machines “harmless fun”.

“What we have got in suburban pokies venues ... is machines were you can

easily lose $600 an hour,’’ Dr Livingstone said.

“ ere should be maximum bets of $1 limiting losses to $120 per hour. We need to look at solutions and there are suggestions $1 bets are the way to go.”

Pokies reform advocate Paul Bendat , who commissioned the

Monash report, said it meant that “no member of the Victorian Parliament will be able to pretend they don’t know of the harm being su ered by the people they represent”.

e Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation’s most recent data shows that $19.3 million has been spent on Melton City’s gaming machines since July, while $2.8 million has been spent in Moorabool . \

your voiceAMBULANCE MIX-UP(Weekly, November 26)

■ My daughter waited more than 26 minutes for an ambulance after an asthma attack.

First they sent the one in Bacchus Marsh to Melton and sent one from Sunbury here, then they cancelled the Sunbury ambulance and sent the Melton call back to Bacchus Marsh.

By that stage her lips and chin had turned blue and the look in her eyes was terrifying. The state government really needs to wake up.BM RESIDENT \ VIA WEB

STRATEGY NEEDS CASH BACK-UP(Weekly, November 19)

■ There’s never been enough “appropriate funding” for infrastructure to keep abreast with Melbourne’s rampant growth.

Already there is a severe shortfall and the great expense of the east-west link will ensure that the shortfall will continue.

Plan Melbourne is about actively projecting our population growth and

opportunities for property developers and residential housing.

With many manufacturing companies going off-shore or closing, it’s assumed that the property market is an industry that can replace it.

Cash ows never keep up with heavy demands for infrastructure and essential services.

There is now the risk that the state government will make further cuts to spending and jobs in an attempt to return the budget to surplus.

There’s a heavy reliance on stamp duty, which is falling.

Growth can’t continue forever, and rst homeowners are struggling to pay for housing. It’s time for the long haul of stability to ensure a sustainable future and improvements to our state – not more growth.VIVKAY \ VIA WEB

TAKE STEPS FOR KIDS’ HEALTH

■ With VicHealth’s Walk to School Month drawing to a close, thousands of families across Victoria have taken steps to make walking a

central part of their school day. Our survey of 500 parents shows most enjoy walking as a family activity. Unfortunately, two-thirds still think streets are dangerous to cross, while half say that traf c is a hazard.

The fact is, kids need at least one hour of vigorous exercise every day for good physical and mental health.

Getting to and from school on foot is a great way to get them started. We would love to see all the families taking part in Walk to School make it a daily habit, all year round.JERRIL RECHTER \ VICHEALTH CEO

my shoutCar doors are more solid than you realise. I discovered this the hard way, having one ung open by a taxi driver as I cycled past his parked car. The driver was apologetic, swearing he looked in the mirror. Little comfort for my scraped and battered body. Having exchanged some skin (mine) for some paint (his), we also exchanged details, but lack of more life-threatening injuries left police decidedly disinterested. The threat of “dooring” is a constant fear for the cyclist. Alert riding had, until now, kept incidents at close calls. But the sudden appearance of the taxi door proved the end of my lucky streak. As cycling rates rise, everyone has a responsibility to remember the road is there to share. A glance over the shoulder costs nothing. Collecting a cyclist can cost you more than $350 in nes or, in less happy circumstances, a life. \

unfinished business keeps labor members coming backSTATE POLITICS

Melton and Moorabool MPs Don Nardella, Natalie Hutchins, Marlene Kairouz and Geo Howard have all committed to contesting next November’s state election.

e four Labor MPs last week con rmed they would seek re-election, saying they had un nished business.

As reported by the Weekly, several local seats will be altered and others renamed as part of an overhaul of Victoria’s electoral boundaries. e Electoral Boundaries Commission has completed redistributions in both houses of State Parliament.

Mr Nardella will run in the Melton electorate, which he has represented since 1999. “I want to keep on representing the terri c communities of Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Eynesbury to make sure they all receive a fair share of funding and facilities from the new government, whoever that is.”

Ms Hutchins, the member for Keilor, is seeking preselection for the newly named electorate of Sydenham.

She said the electorate – which takes in Sydenham, Taylors Lakes, Calder Park, Taylors Hill, Hillside and Plumpton – would allow her to represent about 40,000 residents who were part of her present electorate.

‘‘I think it was unfair that members of the west have been representing 55,000 people, where other electorates had only 20,000 ,” Ms Hutchins said.

Kororoit MP Ms Kairouz said there was much work to be done in the electorate, which includes Caroline Springs, Burnside and Truganina .

Mr Howard, the member for Ballarat East, will stand in the new Buninyong electorate, which includes Ballan, Balliang

and Greendale. e seat includes much of the present seat of Ballarat East, which Mr Howard has represented since 1999.

Melton and Moorabool residents living in the Sunbury and Macedon electorates are certain to have new MPs.

Sunbury resident Josh Bull was last week unopposed in his nomination for Labor for the new Sunbury electorate, which includes Diggers Rest. Mr Bull, who works for federal McEwen MP Rob Mitchell, said he hoped to

be o cially endorsed this week . In Macedon, which includes Toolern Vale and Blackwood, at least four people are believed to have nominated to stand for the Labor Party. ey include former Melton council employee Karen Martin, Gisborne’s Dennis Franklin, former federal McMillan MP Christian Zahra, and Northcote’s Mary-Anne omas.

Labor is expected to nalise its candidates by December 15. \

food bank federal funding in doubt

Organisers of Combined Churches Caring Melton’s (CCCM) food bank are yet to hear if they will still receive federal funding to help the centre relocate.

e centre had been allocated $200,000 by the former Labor government to relocate to a permanent site, due to the redevelopment of its current council-owned building.

As reported by the Weekly, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss last month con rmed Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) allocations made by the previous government would be reassessed.

Reverend Julie Shannon said CCCM had yet to be contacted regarding the funding . “If this speci c funding falls through, we will work closely with the local council to get a good outcome for CCCM and the local community.”

RDAF changes mean a tennis centre in Caroline Springs is also in doubt.

Last month, Melton council chief executive Kel Tori told the Weekly: ‘‘At best, these projects will be delayed and at worst they will be at risk.” \ TM

Mayor Bob Turner says : “ e appeal is about locals helping locals when they need it most.”

CCCM spokeswoman Denise Morris says that to ll at least 100 hampers, “we are looking for Christmas puddings, custards, shortbread, tinned ham, peas, corn and carrots – things that can make an easy Christmas lunch”.

Ms Morris says people can also leave donations at local churches, the Bendigo Bank and CCCM’s Smith Street o ce.

teens’ spree ends at lakeA teenage girl jumped into Albert Park Lake to avoid arrest after a high-speed police pursuit on Friday. The incident began when Melton police tried to pull over an allegedly stolen white Nissan Pulsar on Gourlay Road, Taylors Hill, just before 1am . Police said the driver continued through Taylors Hill, Caroline Springs and along the Tullamarine Freeway, where the car reached 145km/h. The driver then drove towards Melbourne and turned on to Kings Way, ignoring a red light. Police then stopped the chase due to safety concerns. The police air wing continued to monitor the car as it stopped on Lakeside Drive in Albert Park where police arrested two girls . Another girl, who was also in the car, tried to avoid capture by jumping into Albert Park Lake but was arrested on shore. Two of the girls, aged 15 and 16, have been charged. The third girl, 15, is assisting police with their inquiries. \

BRIEFSlife’s too easy, profitable for car thievesCRIME

Police are urging motorists against leaving valuable belongings in cars, saying they attend up to a dozen break-ins in car parks at Melton and Caroline Springs train stations every week.

“It’s happening especially where valuables are le exposed. GPS devices, a good pair of sunnies and laptops seem to be the favourites,’’ Melton’s Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said. ‘‘Another issue is tradies’ tools le in the back of vehicles. We’re having a really bad run of it at the moment.’’

Senior Detective Jenks said that while protective services o cers patrolled the areas every a ernoon and evening, they were not always present.

He said a team of four police o cers was being sent to patrol the problem areas.

“In many instances, number plates are also being stolen and later placed on the o ender’s car to commit petrol the s from service stations,” he said.

“ A small amount are being used to commit serious crime, like armed robberies. ”

Senior Detective Jenks said that while break-ins were common in public areas, parked cars in residential streets and driveways were also being targeted.

Figures released last week show Melton was fourth-highest in Melbourne’s outer west when it came to claims for malicious damage to vehicles, costing car owners $76,412.

RACV general insurance manager Paul Northey said motorists should take preventive steps to deter thieves and vandals.

“If you must park on the street, try and park in a well-lit location with people frequently passing by,’’ he said.

Bacchus Marsh police Inspector Brendon McCrory said most car the s occurred because vehicles hadn’t been locked.

Latest police gures show the number of the s from vehicles in Moorabool jumped from to 286 in the year to September, up from 216 and an increase of more than 32 per cent.

“ e vast majority aren’t getting broken into; they’re unlocked,” he said. \

DECEMBER 3, 2013 \ MELTON & MOORABOOL WEEKLY 11

In a small office crammed with filing cabinets and desks at the back of Werribee police station, officers are on the phones performing welfare checks.

They start by calling women who only three days ago were reported as victims of domestic violence.

Some of the women are reluctant to talk to the police. Some have made up with their attacker and don’t want to lay criminal charges. Others are too scared to speak out or believe there is nothing police can do to help them.

But that doesn’t stop the officers making the calls. Their job is to do everything they can to reduce family violence.

The officers are part of the Wyndham family violence unit, one of the first of its kind in Victoria and formed to respond to calls about domestic abuse.

Wyndham’s soaring family violence rates quickly made getting to every call-out almost impossible.

Now the unit focuses on recidivist offenders and following up with victims to ensure they are receiving the support they need.

Latest police crime statistics reveal that 578 reports of domestic violence were made in Wyndham between October 1, 2012, and September 30, 2013.

Police received 500 reports in the previous year.Wyndham is not the only area with a family violence

problem. Last financial year, police in Hume received 1027 reports of family violence, while Melton reported 497 incidents. Family violence units have been set up in both areas to tackle the problem.

Each year, White Ribbon Day (held last Monday) aims to draw the community’s attention to domestic violence. Men are called on to denounce violence against women and asked to pledge to do whatever they can to phase out family violence.

Wyndham family violence unit’s Senior Constable Dylan Langerak says education and changes in community attitude are the keys to reducing the problem.

“A lot of the time, what happened in the home stayed in the home, but people now realise this kind of stuff is unacceptable,” he says. “People are now starting to call us for advice.”

Langerak believes financial stress, drugs and cultural

incidents of family violence three days earlier. On Thursdays, they go to Werribee Magistrates Court

to deal with intervention orders. In between, they perform house visits, check up on

recidivist offenders who have been in contact with police three or more times in the past 12 months, and call victims who made reports.

“We work closely with affected family members,” Cullen says.

“Sometimes you can work with the victims to help them and sometimes there is nothing more you can do. You try and give them support, but at the end you think, how much further can I go?”

Sally* is just one of the women Cullen is working with. For the past 12 years, she has been a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her ex-partner and then her teenage son, Ben*.

Cullen, Langerak and Constable Nase Holani are in regular contact with Sally and Ben to ensure they are safe. Sally also receives help from Women’s Health West.

“I wish I had got help sooner,” she says. “It started in 2001 when we were living in Altona … I thought it would stop. I’m not the person I was.”

Sally says she never imagined Ben would view violence as the solution to his problems, but a couple of

years ago he began hitting her and smashing up their house. She says being able to talk to Constable Cullen about her problems is helpful. She is reluctant to press charges against her son, fearing he could end up in jail.

Langerak says he understands Sally’s hesitation, but the team is focused on reducing repeat offending.

Police statistics reveal that Wyndham’s family violence unit is one of the state’s busiest.

Holani says the number of cases he and his colleagues deal with daily makes the job difficult and mentally taxing, but the closeness of the unit makes a difference.

He has been part of the team for about four months after working a stint on the vans.

“Working on the van, family violence calls took up about 50 per cent of the jobs so I was aware of how big a problem it was,” he says.

For Holani, dealing with children who are caught up in the violence is the hardest part of the job.

“It is mentally taxing knowing what’s happening to kids. That’s probably what affects you the most.” \

differences are behind Wyndham’s family violence.“Here, there is a real split demographic, but family

violence is so common,’’ he says. “We have people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, refugees and a lot of arranged marriages, which means there is cultural isolation.

“Ice and alcohol are also problems. Ice is expensive and addictive.”

Constable Kristine Cullen has been with the Wyndham unit since the start of the year. Before joining the team, she had no idea how prevalent family violence was.

“I hadn’t had a lot of exposure to family violence when I started, but for me it’s becoming the norm.”

Cullen says most incidents occur on Thursday and Sunday nights.

She says people often stereotype victims of family violence, believing they come from lower socio-economic families or have problems with drugs and alcohol, but the stereotype is wrong.

“You can go to the trashiest houses and the nicest houses. It doesn’t matter. You don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors.”

Each day, Cullen and her colleagues make 10 to 15 calls to victims. That means there were 10 to 15

November was a big month for Melton’s Kristina Scerri .

e 18-year-old completed her VCE exams and learned she’ll be heading to Cambodia in February as part of World Vision’s Global One program.

e program connects Australians with World Vision workers in communities a ected by poverty.

“Because I’ve been sitting my exams it’s yet to sink in,” Scerri says.

“I wrote down what I wanted to do as part of the program and was interviewed about possibly going on the trip. Hundreds of people applied.”

While in Cambodia, she will stay with local families and immerse herself in Cambodian

culture and life. “I’m expecting to see how they live and help them out with whatever they need help with,” she says.

Her interest in working with World Vision arose when she was in year 10 at Catholic Regional College.

“I started as a World Vision leader at my school,” she recalls.

“I want to help people and become a doctor, and I envisage going over to countries like Cambodia to work.”

Scerri, who has to raise $3000 to help cover the costs of next year’s trip, is organising a series of parties and movie nights. \

residents in boundary bindDIGGERS REST

While Sunbury residents are closer to being granted their wish to separate from Hume, the future isn’t as clear for their Diggers Rest neighbours.

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said last week that following the strong result of a recent poll , she intended to establish a panel to recommend new municipal boundaries for the Sunbury region.

With Diggers Rest split between Hume and Melton municipalities , people currently living in Hume are likely to be included in the new shire.

Of the 383 Diggers Rest residents eligible to vote in the October poll, 141 voted in favour of Sunbury becoming its own shire and 77 voted against.

Ms Powell has said there are no plans for the rest of Diggers Rest to become part of the new shire. Diggers Rest resident David O’Connor said the vote failed to provide the town’s residents with any degree of certainty .

“While the township of Diggers Rest is situated within Melton, Diggers Rest is well serviced by Sunbury with respect to day-to-day needs and many residents feel more connected to Sunbury than

Melton,’’ he said. “ e establishment of a local government panel to recommend new municipal boundaries may be in uenced by submissions from within Sunbury aimed at including Diggers Rest as part of the new boundaries.”

Mr O’Connor said that as a growth area, Diggers Rest could be an “integral component

for the future of Sunbury” .“Future commercial development

plans along Vineyard Road in Sunbury and Diggers Rest have the potential to create substantial employment opportunities for

the neighbouring municipalities of Melton and Hume. A sustainable

model for the new municipality of Sunbury is paramount in the short term if rates are to remain a ordable for householders. Hume City and many of those driving the ‘Sunbury out of Hume’ campaign see Diggers Rest as an important rate base.

“It would be tragic for the future of Diggers Rest if the panel were to recommend the inclusion of the Diggers Rest township within the new municipality of Sunbury without some level of consultation with Diggers Rest residents and property owners.”

Panel details are expected next year. \TARA MURRAY

YOUTH

Ten Melton residents were among 40 young leaders who graduated from the Western Bulldogs’ Whitten Project last Tuesday.

Participants attended seminars held by AFL and netball identities, supported fund-raising initiatives at the EJ Whitten Legends game, attained Auskick coaching accreditation and planned a community-based project.

Jack Bartkowicz, Timothy Faoagali, Ashley Kelb, Kasey Woodcock, Hayden Davis, Lachlan Wills, Zach Gervasoni, Sam Jackson, Sara McInnes and Joshua omson

completed the youth leadership program that seeks to identify and sharpen the skills of young leaders in Melbourne’s west.

Caroline Springs resident Jack Bartkowicz (pictured with former AFL footballer and Bali bombing survivor Jason McCartney and Ted Whitten jnr) won the program’s inaugural You Inspire Me award .

“To meet the son of EJ is a thing to be proud of, and to be recognised by people like this in a peer-nominated award is something special,” the 16-year-old said. “Persistence and hard work pay o ... you don’t have to lead from the front.’’ \ TM

melton mulls over joining key forum

Melton council could join a local government transport group that is seeking to secure e ective, e cient and equitable transport across metropolitan Melbourne.

Council representatives met with members of the Metropolitan Transport Forum last Tuesday to discuss joining the group, which includes 23 councils around Melbourne.

e forum is designed to provide a platform for debate, research and policy development, with a major focus on transport and roads in growth areas.

Council chief executive Kel Tori said the meeting covered the bene ts and purpose of the forum. “ e council will consider becoming a member of the forum at a future council meeting,’’ he said, adding that there was a membership fee to take into account.

“In the past 12 months the group has sought to expand its membership base to include outer growth areas. It recognises that for the metropolitan transport system to be e ective, a more holistic approach is required.” \

A vandalism spree in Darley and Maddingley has cost Moorabool ratepayers almost $22,000 in damage to parks and council buildings.

Vandals smashed 55 windows and damaged plumbing and vehicles at the Darley council o ces on the weekend of November 23-24.

e destruction continued with an arson attack on toilets at Darley Park . Iron lacework panels of a bandstand at Maddingley Park were also badly damaged .

Maddingley Park committee of management spokeswoman Marg Scar said the attack was senseless .

“ ey’ve smashed the lovely lacework that’s been there for 100 years,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s very di cult to repair because of the type of material it is.”

Mrs Scar said the vandalism followed the recent the of Maddingley Park’s most developed rose bush; just a deep hole remained.

“Seven years of labour has been destroyed,” she said. “It’s very expensive for council to keep doing repairs, and it’s expensive for the volunteer garden group

who planted these roses.” Mrs Scar said she believed the park should be locked at night to prevent further attacks.

“Gra ti is increasing at a rate we can’t keep up with, and it’s escalated over the past year.

‘‘Last year we had vandals burn the children’s train in the adventure

playground. e most serious damage is happening at night and therefore

justi es locking it.’’ Darley resident Dannielle

Cooper said vandalism was an ongoing problem in the area.

“ ere was rubbish dumped in parkland just the other week. It’s

time to get something happening, or it’s just going to get worse.” Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said he

was angry and disappointed .“ ere are better things the shire could

be spending money on than having to pay for the mess le by these vandals, and I call on the community to assist council and the police if they have any information .”

Inspector Brendon McCrory said police would step up patrols of a ected areas . \

Last week to switch! The final countdown to digital-only TV has begun

The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.

What do I have to do?Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either:• one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or• a new TV with a built-in digital tuner.

Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to.

Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling.

If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today.

Melbourne and surrounding areas switch on 10 December 2013*

*Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

The Weekly is giving readers a chance to win 10 double passes to the movie, with a total prize value of $200.

To enter the competition, visit winthisnow.com.au and follow the prompts. DECEMBER 3, 2013 \ MELTON & MOORABOOL WEEKLY 17

In the bowl of a court on more than 0.2 hectares, this is a property packed with surprises of the delightful kind. Streetside, it looks to be

quite standard fare but once inside it opens up a world of lavish space, mould-breaking design and hard-to-beat entertainment and relaxation amenity.

Kicking off the journey is a wide hallway with high-gloss wooden floorboards, flanked by a carpeted study with walk-in storage, and a sizeable main bedroom with walk-in robes (one big enough to qualify as a dressing room) and a stylish open en suite with twin basins and a huge double shower.

The hall then ducks left to a powder room and door to a double garage (workshop space, remote-control).

Next on the main hallway, glass-inset wooden double doors open to a genuine theatre room, painted entirely in deep mulberry, with blackout curtains. Another large room at the back is all about family games; it has bold burnt-orange walls (matching the baize of the billiard table), and a well-designed wet bar with servery windows to a huge integrated deck.

In the centre of these downtime zones, a carpeted lounge room with gas log fire and a big family-meals area with floorboards surround the kitchen.

Expansive windows perfectly frame the amazing outdoor areas – more about them later.

The kitchen has a long breakfast bar, Bosch dishwasher and Baumatic 900mm cooker; a next-door storage room and extra-large walk-in pantry, followed by a big laundry with heaps of storage take good care of practicalities.

Three bedrooms (two with mirrored robes, one with walk-in), a powder room and a bathroom are down a second hallway.

Beyond the deck and extensive sandstone paving, there’s an outdoor room with TV, granite-topped cupboards, sink and mains gas barbecue. Beside this is a fenced, salt-chlorinated pool with spa that flanks a synthetic-grassed play area with timber fort and equipment.

The backyard is a tribute to the desert landscaping style, with in-ground sleepers and multi-hued and sized river pebbles flowing around succulents and fruit trees. Several circular, corrugated iron vegie gardens match the clever, no-frills approach.

A second driveway heads past landscaped gardens to a 6x12-metre Colorbond shed. Inside and out, there’s a design harmony and artistry that transcends the ordinary – Kurunjang class indeed. \

VSDCAMelton’s bowlers will go to work defending 200 at MacPherson Park this Saturday after two key knocks for the Lions carried them to 6-200 against Altona at the weekend. John Varchione’s 94 and Anthony Gale’s 51 led the Melton innings. The duo came together at 2-34 and put on 87 for the third wicket. Varchione, who opened the innings and saw ve partners come and go, was out six shy of his hundred at 6-181. Melton will defend the runs from 1pm on Saturday. marsh clambers into semi-finalsTwenty20

Bacchus Marsh’s title defence lives on in Gisborne District Twenty20 premier division a er the Bulls got favourable results in the nal round of pool games last week.

e Bulls took care of their side of the equation by beating Woodend 8-114 to 85.

Riddell, Bacchus Marsh’s semi- nal opponent tonight, then put the Bulls into knockout stages by thrashing St Anthony’s by 102 runs.

e victory margins le Bacchus Marsh as the best one-win, one-loss team a er the pool stage and in fourth place on the premier division table.

Scott Wake eld’s unbeaten 37 was top score

for the Bulls against Woodend, while Andrew Dickinson (4-20) was best with the ball.

Riddell will be a tough opponent in tonight’s semi- nal a er Matt Darby (76no), Cameron Moran (66) and Hayden Castle (40) bludgeoned runs against St Anthony’s on the way to 8-225.

e other premier division semi- nal pits Sunbury against Sunbury United. Sunbury thrashed Romsey 6-252 to 127, while United also secured a two-from-two record in the pool stage with its 5-219 to 7-159 win against Wallan.

In district division, Ash eld was the only team to win two-from-two in the pool stage as it beat Diggers Rest Bulla Village 98 to 52 last Tuesday. Finishing top of the pool stage

sets Ash eld up for a semi- nal against Tylden.

Ash eld’s Russell Phillips (34no) batted his team to the 20-over mark before Matthew Bulluss (3-12) and Simon Barry (4-10) obliterated the Burras to have

Diggers Rest Bulla Village out by the 17th over.

Lance eld carried points forward from a rst-round bye and advanced with a 6-134 to 115 win against Macedon. e Tigers will face Rupertswood for a spot in the nal, a er

titleholder still in the running

Gisborne needed a big win or favourable results in other games. It produced a signi cant margin with a 9-156 to 82 victory.

But Tylden’s percentage dropped only to 0.99, while Gisborne’s climbed only to 0.84, leaving Tylden holding fourth spot.
