NEW! EMV DEBIT CARDS We’re excited to be making the transition to EMV Chip cards. If you have a Central Maine Credit Union Debit Card, then beginning in February 2016, you will receive a new EMV debit card, pictured below, when you’re current card expires. If you have a Central Maine Credit Union Credit Card, then you’ll receive a new EMV credit card in March 2016 as we’ll be converting to a new credit card processor in March 2016. Your new credit card will feature advanced EMV Chip technology. EMV, an acronym for Europay, MasterCard and VISA ® , is the worldwide standard for credit and debit payment cards using embedded microchips. This new chip-based technology provides an enhanced layer of security to your transactions. The computer chip enables more secure processing by producing unique data specific to your card and the transaction being processed. This security feature makes your new chip card more difficult to counterfeit. In addition to the embedded microchip, CMCU cards will also have a magnetic stripe on the back. That way you can continue to make purchases at merchants who do not yet have EMV card terminals by swiping your debit card and signing a receipt. You’ll enjoy greater acceptance when traveling abroad as chip cards are common in over 130 countries around the world. If you find yourself at a point-of-sale terminal and are not sure whether to dip or swipe your card, have no fear. The terminal will walk you through the process. For example, if you enter a card into the chip reader slot but the reader isn’t activated yet, it will come up with an error and you’ll be prompted to swipe the card in order to use it. If chip-card readers are not in place at a merchant, your EMV card can be read with a swipe, just like a traditional magnetic-swipe card. You can still conduct transactions; you just lose that extra level of security. Many large retailers, such as Walmart, Target and Costco, have upgraded their POS terminals and are activating them for chip card acceptance, but some businesses are lagging when it comes to upgrading their payment technology. Automated fuel dispensers will have until 2017 to make the shift to EMV. EMV cards will NOT eliminate card fraud. In fact, the credit union will still need to block and reissue your cards if they are compromised in a merchant data breach. What EMV does is make it more difficult to counterfeit your card. This means that fraud on cards is expected to shift from counterfeit cards to online transactions. So it’s still critical to protect your card and PIN, frequently review your transaction history and report anything suspicious to the credit union immediately. DOMINIC ROUX 2016 SCHOLARSHIP Central Maine Credit Union offers the Dominic J. Roux Scholarship Award, available to high school seniors, college students, and adult student members. SAFE DEPOSIT BOX RENTAL CHARGEAnnual safe deposit box rental charges will be deducted from your designated account on Wednesday, January 13, 2016.

NEW! EMV DEBIT CARDS

We’re excited to be making the transition to EMV Chip cards. If you have a Central Maine Credit Union Debit Card, then beginning in February 2016, you will receive a new EMV debit card, pictured below, when you’re current card expires. If you have a Central Maine Credit Union Credit Card, then you’ll receive a new EMV credit

card in March 2016 as we’ll be converting to a new credit card processor in March 2016.

Your new credit card will feature advanced EMV Chip technology. EMV, an acronym for Europay, MasterCard and VISA®, is the worldwide standard for credit and debit payment cards using embedded microchips. This new chip-based technology provides an enhanced layer of security to your transactions. The computer chip

enables more secure processing by producing unique data specific to your card and the transaction being processed.

Many large retailers, such as Walmart, Target and Costco, have upgraded their POS terminals and are activating them for chip card acceptance, but some businesses are lagging when it comes to upgrading their

payment technology.
