Melanie Wenrick (Cont from Cover)

ldquoI talk to my students about having a positive attitude toward mathrdquo

That can raise the excitement and expectation levels for a subject that can be daunting to children and adults alike

ldquoWe have to lay a strong foundation for students to understand how numbers come apart and are put back together and to understand concepts and basic problem-solvingrdquo she says

ldquoWe get so focused on getting kids to the right answer but they need to understand the how and why so that math makes sense to themrdquo

For young students that might mean the simple approach of ldquoIf you had four apples and gave two to your mother how many would you have leftrdquo Elementary Certainly Much more concrete than the equation 4 - 2 = 2 For many students defnitely

In the elementary math methods courses Melanie teaches at Fresno State she strives to help teachers spark a math interest in students that they can apply to daily lessons in and outside the classroom

Melanie points to her experience as a child She recalls numbers and fractions coming to life when she learned to play the fute and began working with quarter notes eighth notes and so on That was a

practical application and helped her comprehend math

ldquoMost of us have been taught math by rules and procedures and we donrsquot understand why and how math is importantrdquo

Elementary teachers are called upon to have a ldquorenaissance qualityrdquo in mastering and teaching many subjects That asking a lot Naturally each teacher will be stronger in some subjects than others

Melanie taught second through ffth grade for several years and gained an appreciation for the challenges of teaching elementary school That led her to pursue a career as a college professor and focus on math education (She also occasionally teaches science methods courses)

ldquoI love learningrdquo she says of her course studies in earning her masterrsquos and doctorate degrees And she says ldquoYou can have more of an impact on more students by working with teachersrdquo

Forever the student herself Melanie visits elementary school classrooms observing her students teaching and watching and listening to children to understand how they learn and how to help them grow

Her reward comes when she sees her college students thriving and managing a classroom with confdence and the children they are teaching are engaged ldquoThatrsquos the fun partrdquo

Melaniersquos family is fully immersed in education and learning Her husband

Eric works for Central Unifed and is in charge of the districtrsquos testing

Their twin 13-year-old children Isabelle and Marcus attended the dual immersion program at Ann B Leavenworth Elementary School in Fresno and are fuent in Spanish

The family enjoys traveling making trips around the country especially to national parks and among other destinations Canada and Ecuador the latter where Melaniersquos mother was born

Melanie has taught at Fresno State for 15 years most of her tenure as part-time instructor allowing her to spend time with her family help coach the Science Olympiad team at Baird Middle School where Isabelle and Marcus attend and pursue her passion of running half-marathons

She has been a selection committee member of EECUrsquos Student Grant Program for 13 years

ldquoI love that the credit union supports and helps students fnancially I was really fortunate as a student to receive scholarships so this is a way to help give back to other studentsrdquo
