CORTLANDMEN's ice hockey

C O R T L A N D

The 2014-15 season is one of new beginnings for the Cortland men’s ice hockey team. Joe Cardarelli was named head coach in June 2014 after serving as an assistant coach with the program last season. Prior to Cortland, Cardarelli had experience coaching at the preparatory school, Junior A, NCAA Division III and NCAA Division I levels. The roster features 15 returning players as well as nine newcomers, with new players coming in at every position. The schedule features the usual season-long slate of 16 conference games as well as

a non-conference schedule that features opponents from throughout the Northeast, including new match ups with several New England schools.

The Red Dragons feature one returning goaltender as well as two newcomers. The lone returner, sophomore Mike Staversky, saw limited action in his first season, earning 14:58 of ice time at Plattsburgh late in the campaign. The two newcomers in goal are freshmen Drew Weigman and Kollyn Jones. Weigman is a product of the Northern Cyclones of the EHL, while Jones comes from the New York PAL Islanders of the USPHL.

Along the blue line, Cortland features five returners. Junior Ryan Wagner again serves as captain, while senior Jeff Vanzant was named an assistant captain this season. Wagner, who saw action in 23 games during his sophomore season, led all defensemen in scoring with 11 points on three goals and eight assists. Vanzant played in 19 games in 2013-14, including

15 SUNYAC contests, recording two assists on the season.

Senior Kevin Antonik has played in 69 games during his career after seeing action in all 24 games last season. He scored two goals and recorded two assists in 2013-14. Junior Kyle Herring tallied nine points on two goals and seven assists last season in 23 games after seeing action in 22 games his freshmen year. Junior Adam Diorio rounds out the returners on defense. He appeared in eight games last year after playing in all 25 as a freshman.

Cardarelli welcomes three freshmen on defense in 2014-15. Brendan Pascarella comes to Cortland by way of the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack of the EHL. Cory Lauer skated for the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots of the OJHL. Drazen Zack was a member of the Connecticut Oilers, also of the EHL.

The Red Dragons return nine forwards in 2014-15, including the top scorer from a season ago. Senior assistant captain Nick Zappia earned third team All-SUNYAC honors last season after leading the Red Dragons in goals (11), assists (17) and points (28). Zappia has seen action

in 73 games over the past three seasons, scoring 34 goals and 28 assists for 62 points. Junior Brant Sherwood and sophomore Casie Garrison each saw action in all 24 games last season. Sherwood scored 12 points on seven goals and five assists. Garrison tallied six points on three goals and three assists.

Junior Mike Davie saw ice time in 22 games, scoring 11 points on five goals, all on the power play, and six assists. Juniors Michael Mascaro and Sam Pinsler saw time in 18 and 16 games, respectively. Mascaro put up two goals and two assists, while Pinsler scored one goal and added two assists. Junior Jason Kenney scored a goal and appeared in 12 games in his first season with the team. Sean Cromarty Assistant Coach

Sean Cromarty joins the Cortland men’s ice hockey coaching staff in 2014-15. Cromarty’s previous coaching experience includes serving as the head coach at Westfield High School in New Jersey from 2011-14 and with the New Jersey Rockets. He also has worked with the USA Hockey Atlantic District Program as an evaluator.

Cromarty is a 2000 graduate of Upper Canada College in Toron-to, Ont., where he captained the boys’ ice hockey team as a senior. He earned a scholarship to Div. I Colorado College, then of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, and was a four-year letter winner for the Tigers from 2000-04.

Cromarty currently owns and operates Competitive Advantage Training, a company geared toward hockey-specific training.

Dan Jones Assistant Coach

Dan Jones enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Cortland men’s ice hockey program in 2014-15. Jones works as the team’s goaltender coach, helps develop off-ice training programs and is responsible for team morale and mental skills.

Jones played four seasons of hockey at SUNY Oswego as a goaltender, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in May, 2013. During his career, the Lakers won two SUNYAC titles and made four Div. III “Frozen Four” appearances. He received the Pete Sears Perse-verance Award and was a member of the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List.

Prior to joining the Cortland staff, Jones served as an assistant private instructor with Joslin Elite Training for three years working with minor junior, college, semi-pro and NHL players.

Joe CardarelliHead Coach

Joe Cardarelli was hired as Cortland’s men’s ice hockey coach in May 2014. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Red Dragons during the 2013-14 school year where he was the program’s recruiting coor-dinator and responsible for coaching the defense.

Prior to Cortland, Cardarelli was the head coach of the Laconia Leafs in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League and led the team to the most wins in the program’s Junior A history. In 2011-12, Cardarelli took over the Yellowstone Quake and turned the team around by improving its goal differential and reducing penalty min-utes, ultimately leading the team to the Northern Pacific League’s playoff semifinals.

No stranger to the SUNYAC, Cardarelli’s coaching background includes three years as an assistant coach at Oswego. As the program’s primary recruiter, he brought in the majority of the players on Oswego’s 2007 NCAA Div. III championship team. During his tenure, the Lakers had three All-Americans, two conference Rookies of the Year, five All-SUNYAC players and eight members of the SUNYAC All-Academic Team.

Cardarelli also served as an assistant coach for Ameri-can International College (NCAA Div. I, Atlantic Hockey) and was the head coach at the National Sports Acad-emy, a preparatory school for winter-sport student-athletes in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Since 2000, Cardarelli has been heavily active with USA Hockey at the local, district and national levels. He’s presented at several Coaching Education Program clinics around the country and works extensively with player development. Cardarelli has been an evaluator for the NYS Central Section tryouts as well as for the New York, Southeastern and Central Districts. Additionally, Cardarelli coaches at a USA Hockey Select Player Devel-opment Camp each summer.

Where Are They Now?The Red Dragons have produced numerous players who have gone onto the coaching ranks, including Chadd Cassidy, Derek Lalonde and Nate Leaman.

CHADD CASSIDY, FORWARDYEARS AT CORTLAND: 1993-95

In July, 2013, Chadd Cassidy was named the 30th head coach in the history of the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Rochester Americans (Amerks) after serving as the interim head coach midway through the 2012-13 season. The Amerks are the AHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Buffalo Sabres.

Cassidy replaced Ron Rolston, who was promoted to the Sabres in February, 2013. Rolston hired Cassidy as an assistant coach at Rochester in August, 2011. In his first full season with the team in 2013-14, the Amerks posted a 36-26-10-4 record and earned a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Cassidy, who has served as both on-ice instructor and team coach at USA Hockey’s New York District camps and select festivals, joined head coach Rolston’s staff as an assistant coach for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program (NTDP) in December, 2005. He served as assistant coach for the U.S. National Under-17 Team that won the silver medal at the 2006 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the silver-medal winning U.S. National Under-18 Team at the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Under-18 Championship. Cassidy culminated his five-year career with USA Hockey by capturing a gold medal at the 2011 IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Germany.

After his playing career, Cassidy’s first coaching job was as an assistant at Cortland from 1999-2001. He moved to Potsdam as an assistant dur-ing the 2001-02 season before serving as head coach at the National Sports Academy for four seasons, where his teams compiled a 124-71-15 record.

Cassidy and his wife, Tara, have two children, Sheldon and Ireland.

DEREK LALONDE, GOALTENDERYEARS AT CORTLAND: 1990-95

After three seasons as head coach/general manager of the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Derek Lalonde was named the head coach of the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL in June, 2014.

While at Green Bay, Lalonde was selected as the 2012 USHL Coach of the Year after leading the Gamblers to a 47-9-4 regular-season record as well as Anderson Cup and

Clark Cup titles. The 47 victories were the most ever for a first-year head coach in the USHL.

Last season, the Gamblers posted a 30-24-6 record and earned one of eight league playoff spots. In 2012-13, Lalonde led Green Bay to a 37-23-4 record and a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference. The Gamblers set a franchise record with 15 straight home wins during the season.

On the international stage, Lalonde served as the head coach of the United States Under-19 National Team at the 2013 World Junior A Chal-lenge, where the team earned the gold medal. Previously, he served as an assistant with the U.S. U19 Team, which captured a gold medal at the 2012 World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Lalonde spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Denver in which he helped the Pioneers to two conference titles and four straight NCAA appearances. Prior to Denver, Lalonde spent four seasons at Ferris State under long-time head coach Bob Daniels.

Lalonde arrived at FSU after serving two seasons (2000-02) as an as-sistant coach at Hamilton College. Lalonde was Hamilton’s junior varsity head coach and served as director of the program’s summer hockey school. Prior to his coaching stint at Hamilton, Lalonde held the same position at Lebanon Valley College from August 1998 through July 2000. He assisted with the establishment of the NCAA Division II-III’s men’s ice hockey program from its inception.

From 1995-98, Lalonde was a graduate assistant coach at the Massachu-setts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Mass. Lalonde coached at a prospects camp for 16-year olds, while a member of the selection committee for the Empire State Games and the New York State Select 16/17-year-old group.

NATE LEAMAN, FORWARDYEARS AT CORTLAND: 1993-97

Nate Leaman enters his fourth season as the head coach at Providence College after eight campaigns as the head coach of Union College, where he coached 16 NHL draft picks, five All-Americans and one Hobey Baker finalist.

Last season, Leaman led Providence back to the NCAA Div. I playoffs for the first time since 2001. The Friars posted a 22-11-6

record, tying the mark for third-most wins in program history and earned a national ranking as high as third in the USCHO.com poll during the season.

In 2012-13, Leaman guided the Friars to a 17-14-7 overall record and a 13-8-6 mark in Hockey East play. The 17 victories were the most for Providence since the 2005-06 season. Leaman coached the Friars’ first All-American since 2004, and Providence attained a national ranking in the USCHO.com poll as high as 16th during the season, its highest ranking since November, 2003. In his first season behind the Providence bench, Leaman led the Friars to the Hockey East Semifinals after upset-ting the second seed in the quarterfinals.

Leaman, Union’s all-time winningest coach, received the 2011 Spencer Penrose Award as the Division I Men’s Coach of the Year, as well as a second straight ECAC Coach of the Year honor, after guiding the Dutchmen to their first-ever Cleary Cup as the ECAC regular-season champions and NCAA Division I playoff berth. Leaman went to Union after four seasons as an assistant coach on Mark Mazzoleni’s staff at Harvard.

Leaman also served as an assistant coach for the 2007 U.S. National Junior Team, helping the team win a bronze medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Sweden.

Leaman has been active in USA Hockey, also serving as an assistant coach on the U.S. National Under-18 Team that captured gold at the 2005 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Plzen, Czech Republic. He also coached teams at USA Hockey’s Select 14 Player Development Camp in 2001 and 2002.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, more than 7,000 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-eight departments with a faculty of more than 500 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 75 undergraduate majors and 92 undergraduate minors, concentrations and options from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 32 traditional and modern buildings. Sixteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 23rd nationally out of approximately 440 colleges and universities in the 2013-14 all-sport Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 25 each of the last 19 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 15 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The state-of-the-art on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena; racquetball and squash courts; a wrestling room; modern athletic training facilities; and the Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on Jets Field with its plush, natural-grass surface. T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests, also is utilized by the soccer teams. Additionally, the College has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
