In small sort of ways, a crack can be a nuisance; in big, everyday sort of ways, the brokenness in our lives can also leave us feeling broken into scattered pieces. We all know what it’s like to feel fractured, torn apart, shattered. Though it is hard to face, and even harder to admit to others, we have all been broken. We might try to hide these fissures, but this Lenten Season, we invite you to hear the stories, and to be comforted by God’s experiences with brokenness. God knows the feeling of broken trust, bonds broken among our beloved friends and family, even the disarray of shattered dreams. Lent Ash Wednesday February 26 | Imposition of Ashes @ 12:00 p.m.

Imposition of Ashes & Worship Service @ 6:30 p.m.

The first day of Lent is named Ash Wednesday. In nature many things have to wither and

decay and turn to ash before new life can spring forth. Early Christians held that before each

person can experience the new life of Easter Time, he/she has to let some of his/her faults and

bad habits die way and thus ‘turn to ash’. This first day of Lent reminds us that unless we are willing to die to our old selves, we cannot be raised to new life with Christ.

First Sunday of Lent March 1 @ 10:00 a.m. | Join us in welcoming Kizito D. Kalima in Worship

In April, 1994, Kizito D. Kalima, was hacked with a machete, left for dead in a pile of

bodies, then chased, imprisoned, tortured and finally, a chance to escape! Slim odds, but better to be shot than slowly cut to pieces by genocidaires. Leading a few others

and running as fast as his scarred teenage body could carry him, he found refuge deep

within the Nyanza swamps.

In July, 1994, after endless days and nights with the cries of Genocide of the Tutsi

echoing all around, as he was on the brink of starvation and madness, Rwanda was liberated. Stick-like and frightened, but not broken, he emerged from the dark morass. A

survivor. Kizito is Founder and Executive Director of the Peace Center for Forgiveness

and Reconciliation, a public speaker, and an advocate for Genocide Survivors. Kizito has

spoken at a variety of events, schools, churches, and community gatherings. He had the pleasure of sharing his story at the United Nations Headquarters in 1994.

Lent, the 40-day period of prayer, penance, and spiritual preparation for Easter, is a time to reflect on the meaning of being

joined to Christ in baptism. It is a time for Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving. Fasting: Fasting is an integral part of Lent. Traditionally, it has included reducing the amount of food we eat and abstaining from

meat. We fast to allow our physical hunger to remind us of our spiritual hunger, our need for God. The purpose of fasting is to

turn our attention to both God and others. Some things to fast from: watching television, foul language, snack or junk foods, spending money on entertainment, and gossiping.

Prayer: Prayer for a forgiving heart and ask the people you have hurt to forgive you. Say a prayer to God, giving thanks for the

blessings in your life. Pray for the children and families who are homeless; and think about ways to you and your family might help them.

Almsgiving (Acts of Charity): Show an act of kindness to each family member today. Show an act of kindness to a friend and to

someone who is difficult to like. Bring hygiene products to donate to Crooked Creek Food Pantry. Go through your closet and find

some clothes in good shape to give away to others who are in need. Skip a meal once a week and donate those funds to the

Lent Appeal Offering on Sunday, April 5.

Faith, Family, & Friends Sunday Sunday, March 15 @ 10:00 am.

As you embark on your Lenten journey, invite family,

friends, neighbors and co-workers to join us. In many

ways, the experience of brokenness is universal to all of us: broken bodies, broken hearts, broken relationships,

broken lives. Lent is a time when we take this

brokenness very seriously, recognizing that at its root is

our broken relationship with God.

Fellowship Hour Fasting As a church community we will be fast-

ing during Lent from sweets and des-

serts during the Fellowship Hour.

Faith & Movie Night

“Beautifully Broken” Friday, March 20 @ 6:30 p.m.

A light meal will be served.

Youth & Teens Movie Night

“Overcomer” Saturday, March 21 @ 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

“High school basketball coach John Harrison and

his team face an uncertain future when their

town's largest manufacturing plant shuts down

unexpectedly. As hundreds of people move away,

John reluctantly agrees to coach cross-country, a

sport he doesn't even like. His outlook soon

changes when he meets Hannah Scott, an

unlikely runner who pushes herself to the limit.

Inspired by the words and prayers of a new

friend, John starts to train Hannah for the biggest

race of her young life.”

A light meal will be served.
