Appendix (Books)

The Human Studies Collection is housed in the Reserve Book Room of the Humanities Library at the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology. The collection consists of newspaper and journal articles, unpublished papers, and ephemera ofboth the Women’s Movement and the Men’s Movement. The material is divided into a women’s section (sample subjectheadings: education and socialization, sex role characteristics and differences, employment, sexuality, family, society andgovernment, mental and physical health, and Women’s Liberation Movement) and a men’s section (sample subjectheadings: socialization – "masculinity," relationships and attitudes toward women, homosexuality, fatherhood and family, sexuality, and Men’s Liberation Movement).

The collection, which began as the private research collections of Robert Fein (McLean Hospital), Joseph Pleck(Wellesley College), and Mary Rowe (M.I.T.), now numbers over 2,500 items. Two grants, one from the Office of thePresident and Chancellor, M.I.T., and one from the R.K. Mellon Fund, administered by the Wellesley College Center forResearch on Women in Higher Education and the Professions, provided for the updating of the collection and publicationof catalogue bibliographies.

The collection continues to grow as scholars contribute materials relevant to their research, as well as their ownpublications. Further, the published literature is scanned regularly with an eye for appropriate additions. The result is abody of literature which reflects the current interests in both women’s and men’s issues and which also provides a broadbackground of information for the analysis of those issues.

The Men’s Studies Bibliography serves as a catalogue of the materials contained in the Men’s Studies Collection. Theappendix to this edition is a bibliography of books relevant to the study of men. While the list is not exhaustive, it doesprovide a good overview of the current research situation.

Your comments and suggestions are encouraged.
