We don’t mind if people say they don’t want their children to be immunised, but we want everyone to know it is available. The contrasts between Bream Bay and London. It was interesting to meet the new owner of Ruakaka Motors, Robert Potter last week. A born and bred Londoner he has come here for a change of lifestyle. He commented about fish smokers on sale at the Warehouse. “In London people wouldn’t know what to do with a fish smoker.”And he says he has never in his life met a farmer. “I don’t think I have ever even met anyone who knows a farmer.” He was intrigued by the Waipu Primary Calf Club where children bring along their pet lambs and calves and was planning to call in and have a look on his way to the England/Scotland rugby match last Saturday. “People in New Zealand live a lot more closely to nature”, he commented. You have to meet someone like Robert to realise how much we take for granted. It doesn’t feel much like summer this morning – it is wet and windy but it must be just around the corner. Once again we have all the summer sports swinging into gear.

There is tennis, cricket, sailing, surf lifesaving, golf, fishing, circus club and pony club - plenty of activities to pry the kids away from their i pods, computers and cellphones. We should impress on them that we have the advantage of living by the sea, in a rural area with a relatively unpolluted and uncrowded environment and they need to make the most of it while they can. They may end up living and working in London. Its good news that a team of people have gone on the committee and offered their help to sort out the mess at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre. I have worked with two of those on this list: Spencer Cummings and Winston Woods on the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust and I know they are people who roll up their sleeves and get to work. I am sure the community will back the new committee if it decides to have a few working bees to help with the upgrade. The recreation centre is too important a community asset to leave in its current state of disrepair.

Tongan rugby team members visit Ranburn Rest Home.

There was great excitement at the Ranburn retirement home and hospital on Wednesday when three players from the Tongan rugby team paid a visit. The lounge and reception area were decked out in Tongan flags and red balloons and a special cake had been made for the occasion with the words in icing – Kia Ora. Malo a lava mai. The towering lock Sione Timani, Kisi Pulu and Viliame Iongi very graciously shook the hands and posed for photographs with the elderly residents. The small boys of the Waipu Primary haka group came across and performed bare - chested for the visitors. With their school uniforms back on they lined up to have the rugby players autograph the back of their shirts. Graeme Smith, who is the Rugby World Cup liaison person for the Tongan team, said he has found the Tongan players are very good at relating to children and elderly people, which he attributes to their living in large extended family situations. Graeme, whose mother had been a resident at Ranburn, was influential in arranging the visit. The Ultimate Care Group which runs 16 retirement homes in New Zealand has assigned a rugby team to each of them and will be awarding the home which does the most to support its team with a mystery prize for its residents. The Ranburn staff members think that the party they put on for representatives of their Tongan team means they are in with a chance.

Sixth Ruakaka liquor outlet proposed for Big Tomato shops. The Whangarei District Council has received an application for a new liquor outlet in what used to be a real estate agent at the Big Tomato shops on Port Marsden Highway. If a licence is granted to the applicant - Sita Enterprises Ltd. and the new store is opened, there will be a total of six alcohol retail outlets in the Ruakaka/One Tree Point area, the other five being: the Marsden Cove Thirsty Liquor store, the Ruakaka Liquor Centre at the Ruakaka Tavern, Supervalue supermarket, Ruakaka Four Square and the Oasis store at Ruakaka Beach. Sita Enterprises Ltd is asking to be able to sell alcohol between the hours of 9am and 10pm, seven days a week. Under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989, the Council and the Police have limited powers to turn down an application for a new alcohol outlet. They can refuse to grant a license if the applicant is found to be an unsuitable person: e.g: has a criminal record or is an illegal immigrant. They also need to be assured that measures will be taken by the applicant to ensure minors will not be sold alcohol - usually that someone with a licensed premises manager’s certificate is present when the shop is open. However, they cannot take the number of already existing liquor outlets in the neighbourhood into consideration. All this will change in March next year when the Alcohol Law Reform Bill is due to pass into law. The new law will make it harder and more expensive to obtain a liquor license and give local communities more say in the location and number of licensed premises in a district. The new act will provide the legal framework for district councils to adopt Local Alcohol Policies. The public will be invited to participate in the formation of such policies. Councils will be able to consider amenity and “good order” when determining new or renewed liquor licences. They will be able to take such matters as likely noise, nuisance and vandalism problems on nearby businesses and residents into account. The Sita Enterprises Ltd. application, which was publicly notified in the Whangarei Leader on 30 August and 6 September, precedes the stricter regulations of the new bill. Under the current legislation only people with a “greater interest” then a member of the general public (such as someone living alongside the premises) can object to the granting of a licence. According to a Wellington District Council leaflet explaining who is considered as having a “great interest” status “Someone living ten kilometres away who has a concern about the effects of alcohol on the community” would not come into this category. Grant Couchman, the Whangarei District Council’s Regulatory Services Manager, confirmed that no objections have been received to the Sita Enterprises application.

Meningococcal immunisation campaign gets underway in Bream Bay. receive immunisations because of the death of the One Tree Point toddler Jacob Whyte in Star Ship Hospital. Jacqui makes the point, “If you were vaccinated for Meningococcal B, you still need to be vaccinated for Meningococcal C. It is not the same bug.” Vaccinations will be offered to Bream Bay’s primary school children and to Otamatea High School students in Term 4. Pre-school children can receive their immunisations at the Bream Bay and Waipu Medical Centres from 10 October. School age children, who

miss out on the school immunisation programme, can also go to the medical centres. “There are a lot of worried people out there”, said Karla Connew, the manager of the Waipu Medical Centre. She said the medical centre had received a number of calls from people anxious to have protection against this disease for themselves and their children.. There have been seven confirmed cases of Meningococcal C in Northland this year. Three Northland people, including little Jacob Whyte, have died of this disease,“There is a real urgency about getting our children immunised”, said Jacqui. She also urges people to be vigilant and to see a doctor if they or their child are suffering flu like symptoms. The Northland District Health Board is holding an information evening on the immunisation programme at Bream Bay Kindergarten (in Peter Snell Road) on Thursday 6 October at 3pm. Doctor Clair Mills, the Northland District Health Board Medical Officer of Health, will be guest speaker. Information, including the dates the programme will arrive at various schools, is available on the website:www.northlanddistricthealthboard.org.nz.All Northland schools reaching as far south as Topuni will be included in the programme.

Blessing of the animals service.A collection of dogs, a brown hen named Hen-ny Penny, a moulting rainbow lorikeet and a goldfish came a long to receive a blessing at this year’s St Francis of Assisi ceremony held at the Anglican church hall in Tamingi Street, Ruakaka on Sunday 2 October. Janet Heemeyer, who is a volunteer of 15 years with the Whangarei Bird Rescue Centre spoke of her work. She said she didn’t choose to do the job the birds just seemed to choose her. “Birds just seem to drop out of the sky in front of me.”Janet brought a long a fledgling thrush she is nursing and invited children to come forward to pop a teaspoon of jellymeat into its mouth. The congregation sang “All things Bright and Beautiful and the Reverend Idabelle Webb sprinkled holly water over the heads of pets and pet owners alike. Right: Six year old Angus McDonald holds up a cage with Indie the lorakeet and Minty the fledgling thrush to receive blessings from the Reverend Idabelle Webb.

There is a smart new row of flagpoles on state Highway One, opposite the Uretiti camping ground. They went up several weeks before the commencement of the Rugby World Cup, however, with the preliminary games of the tournament, just about complete, and both Whangarei games played, no

flags have been fixed to these poles. It turns out that this particular set of flagpoles has nothing to do with rugby. They are part of a scheme Whangarei District Council staff have dreamed up called The sense of Place Project. Ann Midson, the Whangarei District Council’s public relations officer, said that, as flagpoles near the city centre were needed for the Rugby World Cup, it made sense to hire someone to put up all the flagpoles for the sense of place project at the same time. The council’s head of planning Paul Dell, who now seems to now have the title WDC Group Manager District Living is quoted in a recent advertisement in the Whangarei District Council promotional publication - The Leader as saying:“We aim to pull the district together by using a system of plantings and built forms that compliment one another, reinforce the uniqueness of our district and show that care and good planning are central to how we do things here.”

A new team to look after the Ruakaka Recreation Centre.

The Ruakaka Recreation Centre has a new team of people to oversee its care. Thirty - five people turned up to a public meeting held at the centre on Tuesday 27 September and voted in a new committee with Andreas Thirling as chairman and Winston Woods, Janette Kerr, Ian Duffield, Sasha Subatini, Daniel Cassidy and Spencer Cummings as members. Andreas said last Wednesday he and several committee members had already conducted a thorough inspection of the building and would be making plans for a tidy up and repairs. One of the first jobs would be to fix a leak in the roof above the stairwell. Further down the track the committee would be holding public working bees. The recreation centre building has fallen into disrepair over the past few years as its governing committee has been short of members. The centre was built in 1981 when a sub committee of the Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Association worked with the Whangarei County Council to secure a grant of $400,000 from the New Zealand Electricity Department which at that time was building the nearby Marsden Power Stations. The top storey was added in 1986 with a $125,000 donation from the New Zealand Refining Company. The recreation centre is home to a number of local community organizations including: the Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Association, the Bream Bay United soccer club, the Ruakaka Squash Club and the Bream Bay 60s Up group. A school holiday programme is run from the building and the early childhood centre next door is part of the complex and pays rent to the Recreation Centre Committee. There is a gymnasium in one corner of the lower storey. Until last year when the new Ruakaka library and council service centre was built, the library had been housed in the recreation centre basement.

Waipu Primary School Calf Club day held on Saturday 1 October was a success said school principal Paul Ramsay. In total 87 children brought along calves, lambs or goats slightly down on last years total of 94 but still a pretty good portion of the 230 students enrolled at the school. This year a decision was made to invite the Lions and a private caterer in to provide food and hot drinks instead of running PTA stalls so parents could be free to see what was going on with their children and their pets. The only school fund raising going on was for the Year 6 trip to Rotorua. Part of this effort was the annual auction of cakes made by fathers of Year 6 children. Auctioneer Steve Jones managed to drum up some good prices with one white chocolate creation in the shape of a calf made by Alan Vaile fetching $315.

Scott and Kim Morris are the new managers at the Mission to Seafarers centre at Marsden Point. The couple recently returned from the Gold Coast in Australia where they have lived for the past three years to be closer to family in Whangarei. Kim says two separate family members pointed out the job advertisement to them and the couple felt the position was made for them.

Looking out the window of their upstairs flat across the harbour to North Head and Mount Manaia, Scott says, “If you have to return from the Gold Coast, where better than to a view like this.” Scott, who was born in Texas, came to New Zealand with his family in 1975 and retains traces of an American Accent. He had a tyre shop on Fire Brigade Hill in Whangarei and he continued to work in the automotive tyre industry in Australia while Kim home schooled an eight – year - old grandson. The centre is open from 2pm to 4pm and from 6.30pm to 10pm each day. Scott runs a mini van to pick seafarers up from the port. The lower storey of the building is the seafarers’ centre with comfortable armchairs, a pool table, Internet access, and a shop selling toiletries and confectionery, coffee and tea facilities and phones so seafarers can call loved ones at home. Depending how many ships are in Port, they can get pretty busy. It is interesting how the cultures vary from ship to ship and which items they buy from the shop. When an Indonesian crew called in there was a big run on chocolate and another group was more interested in toiletries. An Indian crew brought up lots of paua jewellery. Their grandson is enjoying watching the big machinery at the port. A workshop where maintenance and repair on the big log grabbers next door and he likes watching these come and go. He also gets on well with the seafarers, “Last night he was playing pool with a Chinese seafarer. They couldn’t speak the same language but they just seemed to work it out,” said Kim.

The Waipu Tennis club has some new bright blue astro turf laid over its courts ready for this season’s play. The club secured a $50,000 grant from the ASB Community Trust and a $20,000 interest free loan from the Whangarei District Council, which, together with the club’s own savings of $15,000, has paid for the new turf. The Whangarei District Council also contributed a $5,000 grant for some new nets. At this season’s opening rally, on Monday 25 September, tennis club patron Tony Solomon was given the privilege of hitting the first official ball over the new nets. Club President Paul Ramsay said, “Stuff like this doesn’t happen unless you have a dedicated committee

prepared to do a lot of work.” The members of the sub – committee, which worked on this project, were: Paul Ramsay, Maurice Goddard, Millen McKay and Mary Abercrombie. Mary had put a lot of work into making funding applications and Maurice and Millen had painted the clubhouse and laid new carpet inside. Other club members had helped out at working bees. Paul said he was hopeful the new turf would last for the rest of his tennis-playing career. The Waipu Tennis Club is keen to increase its membership as this will make it easier to pay off the $20,000 loan. The first of two business house nights was due to be held last Monday 3 October, the second will be next Monday 10 October at 6.30pm to be followed by a mixed doubles night on Monday 17 October. The club offers free professional coaching for juniors and intermediate children. Junior tennis on Saturday mornings will start at the beginning of the next school term. Juniors start at 9am and intermediates at 11am. Juniors and intermediates also play on Wednesday nights after school. The club is still looking for someone to take on the job of junior co-ordinator

New turf in time for a new season at the Waipu Tennis Club.

The gangway out onto the pontoon at the Waipu Fishing Club has been re-moved after an assessment by an engineer found both the gangway and the pontoon to be in need of replacement..Ann Midson – Media Relations Advisor for the Whangarei District Council said, “To keep people safe in the meantime we have removed the gangway – that way there is less risk of someone using it in its precarious state and get-ting hurt.”She said, designs are being drawn up to replace the structures and these will be discussed with locals and the Waipu Fishing Club this Thursday. “When a preferred design is selected the aim is to have a new structure in place by Christmas, consultation and weather permitting.”

Marsden Yacht and Boat Club“Try Sailing” at our Opening Day,

Sunday 16 October, 1.00pmWe kick off our new season with a “Try Sailing Day” off our Clubhouse at One Tree Point on Sunday, 16th October. We extend a very well warm welcome to any-body of any age to join us to experience the enjoyment of being out on the water in a yacht. We will have our Club sailing dinghies ready to take interested people, both young and old out for a sail. There will also be an opportunity for participants to have a short sail on the harbour on a keel yacht. We start at 1.00pm and will conclude the day’s activities with a sausage sizzle. A highlight of the day for our Club will be the launch-ing of our newly donated RIB Patrol/ Rescue boat. It will replace one of our old patrol boats dating from 1976. We also have another new RIB arriving next January, the funds for which were obtained from Ox-ford Sports Trust and ASB Community Trust. We are indebted to both Trusts for their generosity. We have a varied sailing programme for the coming season. Activities range from serious competitive

racing to ‘fun’ cruise races and visits to other Clubs throughout Northland. We will be conducting trials to select Northland’s P-Class representative at the Tanner Cup – the first major stepping stone for most famous NZ Yachtsmen – e.g., Russell Coutts, the late Sir Peter Blake, etc.etc.We will again hold our annual Tutukaka Keeler/Trailer Yacht Race in March. For you keel yacht owners we are more than willing to organise a racing and/or fam-ily cruise programme. We will again conduct our “Learn to Sail” programme for the youngsters and the not so young. We have a fleet of 5 Optimist and 2 Starling Yachts for learners, which means that beginners, initially, don’t need to have their own boat for their first year of sailing. We look forward to having you visit our Club Opening Day. Remember, “Sailing is for Life”.Further enquiries Andrew Forsythe, Ph. 4330388 or Warren Daniel, Ph. 4327268
