RangersviewingCourtneyshortlyaftershewastreatedintheMusiaraarea.

Weexperiencedafewshowersinthelasttwomonths.ThishaskepttheLoitamigrationinthenorthernportionoftheecosystem.GeneralWithallofthecropsoutofthefieldswehaveexperiencedmuchlesshuman-elephantconflictinthelasttwomonths.Thisgaveusachancetofocusonotheractivities.WesentreconnaissancetobothLoitaandtheMauForest,heldtwogeneralstaffmeetings,re-trainedtherangersonusingtheWILDapp,heldseveralofficermeetings,re-shuffledallpatrolteams,andstartedanewfencemonitoringteam.ThefencemonitoringteamismadeupoftworangerswithamotorbikeandaGPS.TheyaresystematicallymovingfromthemostnorthernextentoftheecosystemeasttomapfencesintheOlkinyeiandMajiMotoareas.OncethisareaiscoveredwewillmovesouthtocovertheSianaandLoitaareas.Thisisanambitiousprojectbuttheyhavemadegoodprogressalready.UsingtheWILDapp,wehavebeenabletoquantifyrangerpatroldistancesandimprovedailyreportingoftherangerteamstoHQ.DailyuseofthesmartphonesandpopulatingtheWILDpatrolreportswasnothappening,aswewouldhaveliked.DuringthestaffmeetingsandrefreshercourseswereiteratedtheimportanceofdatacollectionthoughWILDanditsabilityto

monitorrangerperformance.AllrangerstationsarenowrecordingdatadailyontheirsmartphonesandsendingtoHQeveryevening.Onthe15thofSeptember,wesubmittedanapplicationfortwounmannedaerialvehicles(UAVs)tobepilotedbytheCEO.TheapplicationprocesswasratherextensiveandneededanumberofsupportingdocumentationincludingUAVinsurance,whichwaspurchased.WILDdetailedreport:SubmittedbyWilsonSairowuaMEPRangersReport-September2017Introduction:PreviouslyMEPrangershavebeenrecordingMIKEandHECdatamanuallywithtextmessageupdatessentdailytoHQviamobilephonesandwrittenreportsarerecordeddailyusingareportbookandbroughttotheHQattheendofthemonth.PhotographstakenbycameraarealsosubmittedattheendofthemonthandpatroltracksrecordedbyGPSaredownloadedeverytwoweeks.Extractingthenecessaryinformationformthesixbooks,patrollogs,camerasandGPSwasextremelytimeconsumingandleftlargemarginsforerror.WILDisamobileapplicationdesigntoimprovethecollection,sharing,managementandanalysisofrangerdata.MEPhasbeenusingtheWILDappsinceitsinceptionin2016.Unfortunately,rangershavenotbeencollectingthedatadailyasrequired.NowalltherangersarerequiredtologtheirpatrolsandincidentsintoWILD.Thisdatacollectioniswhatguidesustodirectingourresourcestotheareasit’sneededmost.PatrolDetails:Thebelowscreenshotillustratesthemainconcentrationofourpatrolteamsandthereconnaissanceteam’stracksinLoitaandMau.

RecordingPatrolsForthemonthofSeptemberMEPrangersmanagedtocoveradistanceof1,072kmonfootand1,133kmbycar.TheEnkutototeamcoveredthelargestdistancethismonthonfootat362km.Ranger’spatrolslogsaresentdailybyeachteamandthisisquitedifferentcomparedtotheGPS,whichtherangersbringaftereverytwoweeks.Thesetrackswillactuallyawardthebestteameachquarter.WildlifeSightingsTheeasiestwayofrecordingwildlifesightingsisbytakingphotosonmobilephonesandsendingthemimmediately,whichisamuchquickermethodoftransferringthephotosthenrangersbringingtheircamerasanddownloadingtheimagesaftereverytwoweeks.Theteam,whichrecordedthemostsightings,wasOlkinyeiConservancyandtheysentgoodphotographicevidenceoftheherd.RecordingIncidents:HumanwildlifeconflictsFortheaboveperiod,wedidnothavetomanyincidents,MunyasandKawaiteamrecordedcropraidingincidentsfourandthreedaysrespectively,currentlyit’splantingseasonhencelesscasesofconflicts,thiswillriseimmediatelywhencropsripen.PropertydestructionofelephantsbreakingupfenceswasalsorecordedbyMunyas.PoachingNopoachingcasesthismonthAnimalmortalityAdeadelephantwasfoundinIldungishovillage,thecarcasswasreportedbyOlkinyeiteam.Thecauseofdeathconsideredashuman-elephantconflict,thecausewasaspearwound.IllegalhumanactivityMobileteampatrollingintheLoitaandMauForesthasbeenrecordingloggingincidentsinsidetheforest.FourpeoplewerearrestedforloggingintheLoitaNaiminaEnkiyioForest.ThebelowreportwasbuiltbythetrackingmanagerandwewillneedtoworkwithPREPAREDandStrathmoreuniversitytogeneratereportsautomatically.Rangerspatrolreport Kawai HQ Muny

PartnershipDevelopment:AngamaLodgeisrunningaMara-themedphotographycompetition,whichisduetobelaunchedon1stNovember2017.MEPhasbeenchosenasoneofsixlocalcharitiesthatwillbenefitfromthe$20competitionentryfeewithentrantsnominatingthecharitytheywishtosupport.AngamahavealsokindlyofferedtoshowcaseMEP’sworkintheirnewphotographystudiowhichiscurrentlybeingbuilt,includingdisplayingoneofMEP’soldsatellitetrackingcollars,givinggueststheopportunitytosponsoranewone.Security:AganghasbeenoperatinginMEP’sareaofoperationaspreviouslyreported.InSeptember,thesamesuspectedganghitMararientaonthe22ndSeptemberandthenAitongonthe27thSeptemberwheretheyshotandwoundedanAdministrationPoliceman.Thegangissuspected

tocomefromTransmaraandtheIntelunitisworkingonthecasewiththepoliceandlocaladministration.TheIntelunituncoveredivorysellersinNairobiandsetupafakebuyintheKiberaareaalongtherailroadtracks.OurundercoverrangerandinformantmetupwithanundercoverKenyaWildlifeServiceteamfromtheirHQandconductedthestingoperationonthe26thofAugust.Unfortunately,duringthearrestoneofthesuspectsmanagedtoturntheKWSofficer’spistolmuzzleontotheKWSofficerandfiredoneround,whichwentthroughherthigh.Theystillmanagedtoarrestthesuspectandrecover36kgofivory.Shewasadmittedtohospitalandmadeaquickrecovery.IncidentsSitReps:Bushmeatrecoveredandarrest:19/8/17.

HECHEChasdeclinesignificantlyinthisperiod.Wearehowevergearingupforthenextseasonbyraisingfundsforthehelicopter,makingsureWILDisworkingforHECrecording,buyingfirecrackersandensuringwestrategicallydeploywhentheseasonstarts.IntheTransmaraandOlongolinareasfarmershavestartedplanting(endofSeptember).ThatmeansthatourconflictseasonwillstartattheendofNovember.

HelicopterUpdate:WehaveusedthehelicopterverylittleinthisreportingperiodduetothedecreaseinHEC.TheCertificateofAirworthinessandtheCEO’slicensealsoexpiredinAugustandSeptemberandwillberenewed.ElephantTracking:Onthe10thofSeptemberLucy’scollarbrokeoffintheNyekweriForest.Shewasdifficulttocollarinitiallyandwewillneedtoworktofindandcollarheroranothermemberofherherdinthethickforest.Onthe6thofAugustNkoidilla’scollarbrokeoffintheNaikaranearLoita.Wearedoubtfulthatshecanberelocatedandrecollared.WehavenotifiedWorldWildlifeFundofthisandcollectedthecollar.ElephantChirihadsomeinterestingmovements.Shewentonthe28thofAugusttotheLoitaForest.WesentateamtheretomonitorherandshethencamebackveryclosetoherstartingpointinSianaonthe12thofSeptember.ThisisthefirstcollaredelephanttomoveintotheLoitaForestfromtheMara.Thegroundteamrecordedthatshewaswithfourelephantsbutthereweremanyherdsintheforest.ElephantCourtneywastreatedonthe23rdofAugustintheMusiaraSwampareaintheMMNR.Whenshewascolledwepulledout12arrowsandduringtreatmenta13tharrowwaspulledout.SoonafterhetreatmentshemovedintotheMaraNorthConservancy.Ivyhasbeenmovingintofarmswhichdonothavecrops.Wesuspectsheandherfamilyaretargetingfamilygardensandpumpkinpatches.HanzhouseemstobestagingonthebaseoftheSiriaEscaprmentbuthasnotgoneintofarms.
