In this issue of Giving, we salute themany contributions of Craig DeGarmoof Janesville, Wisconsin. Through his

business, DeGarmo Plumbing & Piping,Inc., Craig has coordinated and donatedcountless hours renovating bathroom andkitchen areas of Mercyhealth’sHouse

of Mercy HomelessCenter in Janesville.Additionally, he hasrecruited other contractorsto donate materials andlabor for upgrades to

the facility to make it more comfortablefor the more than 6,000 people who havelived at the center since it opened in1997. We sat down with Craig recentlyto ask him why he gives back.

Tell us how you first becameconnected to Mercyhealth?

My wife, Jen, and I grew up in thisarea. Over the years, we have enjoyed ourconnections with Mercyhealth, both personally and professionally. And, ourtwo sons were born and baptized atMercy Hospital. I have been a contractorfor Mercyhealth since I started myplumbing business 25 years ago. Both ofus value the wonderful services the Houseof Mercy offers local residents in need, andwe wanted to give back to the healthsystem for all their efforts to make ourcommunity stronger and more viable.

As generous and loyal donors to theMercyhealth Development Foundation, what inspires you to give?

Jen and I have always had a soft spot inour hearts for those who are less fortunate. We are grateful that we have the abilityto give our “time, talent and treasure”back to the community, and we do whatwe can. Before the Charity Ball began,we would call Ron Del Ciello, Director of

House of Mercy at the time, for a headcount of the kids who were staying at the homeless center at Christmas time. We would put together holiday gift bagsfor all of them, and encouraged otherfamilies to do the same.

What other community causes are important to you?

Our commitment to making this community a better place to live andwork has always been a priority. I’ve

supported local youth sportsprograms that my sons haveparticipated in and even stayedon the Milton Youth Footballboard well beyond their partic-ipation. Jen and I have beenvery active in the JanesvilleYouthHockey and Lacrosse Clubs. Iserved on the Janesville CityCouncil and many City ofJanesville committees for eightyears, and continue to be activein Forward Janesville Inc. as amember, past Chair of its Board, and a member of its FoundationBoard. We also support the Cityof Janesville ARISE plan fordowntown development, and I serve on the ARISE Nowcommittee. We’ve been activein the Janesville School District

as volunteers and advocates. We also supportmany local, nonprofit organizations thateducate the community about domesticviolence, homelessness and poverty, empowering women, and promoting the arts.

Any favorite travel destinations?

We’ve been fortunate to travel a greatdeal over the years, and have enjoyed everydestination so far! Highlights include skiingin Colorado, Hawaii, and Las Vegas.

Tell us about your family.

Jen and I have been marriedfor 20 years and have twosons who attend ParkerHigh School. Charlie (18) isa senior and Sullivan (14) isa freshman. We also have a Great Dane named Regan (9) that we rescuedseveral years ago. The Foundation thanks

the DeGarmos for theirdedication and ganerosity. ❖

Mercyhealth Names New Hospital After Rockford Native Javon Bea

The Mercyhealth Corporation Boardof Directors recognized the almostunprecedented organizational

growth and success of Javon Bea’s 30-yeartenure with Mercyhealth with a unanimousboard resolution to name MercyhealthHospital in Rockford Javon Bea Hospital. The hospital has one hospital license forboth its locations.“So many major factors contributed to

the Board’s decision to recognize Javon’salmost unbelievable accomplishments since joining Mercy in 1989. The sweepingchanges he has made since 1989 haveresulted in unprecedented growth, enhancedpatient care, improved access and long-termstability. Javon has demonstrated anunwavering 30-year commitment toimproving the health and well-being of theover 2.4 million patients Mercyhealth serves each year. The Mercyhealth Corporation Board of Directors felt it was theright time to recognize his dedication, for his entrepreneurialspirit, and for his ever-present commitment to doing the nextright thing for our patients and employee/partners. He has donea tremendous job,” said Mercyhealth Board of Directors BoardChairman Rowland J. McClellan. Bea joined Mercyhealth in 1989, when Mercy was a single,

stand-alone community hospital, with more square footage than patients. It was struggling to meet payroll. Today, underJavon’s leadership, Mercyhealth has grown from these humblebeginnings—serving less than 89,000 patient visits a year, withno employed physicians, 450 employees and a negative bottomline—into an integrated health system serving over 2.4 millionpatient visits a year with 7 hospitals, 89 primary and specialtycare facilities in 55 communities across southern Wisconsin andnorthern Illinois, a home health and hospice division, and thewholly owned and operated MercyCare insurance companywhich has experienced tremendous growth since its inception.Mercyhealth now employs over 750 physicians, 8,000-plusemployee/partners, and has gross revenue of over $3 billion. A Rockford native, Bea has a long history in the region.

He was born and raised on the far west side, the youngest of 12. As a child, he delivered newspapers and worked at the hospitalon Rockton Avenue mopping floors and as a physical therapytechnician, where his interest in health care was piqued. Hereceived a college scholarship from the Rockford Memorial

Hospital Auxiliary. “We could have chosenany Mercyhealth facility to dedicate in thename of Javon Bea, but since he was bornand raised in Rockford, it is truly a testamentto Javon’s life that we chose the MercyRockford Hospital for this dedication. This is his home,” said McClellan. In 2015, Javon brought the plan to merge

with Rockford Health System to the Boardof Directors. “He talked about the partnershipas the ‘next right thing to do,’ as RockfordHealth System was struggling financiallyand had lost $48.7 million dollars over itslast five years. With Javon’s 30-year historyof creating, growing and developing the successful Mercyhealth, we knew Javon hadwhat it would take to turn Rockford HealthSystem around and improve health care forthe greater Rockford region. And, in fact,

Bea turned Rockford Health System around in one short year, from averaging net losses of almost $10 million dollars a yearfor the previous five years to net income of $27 million dollars a year while continuing to help those in need as the largestMedicaid and charitable care provider in northern Illinoisoutside of Cook County, providing tens of millions of dollars in Medicaid and free care each year,” said McClellan.“Javon has always exhibited a strong work ethic, creativity

and perseverance. He has worked incredibly hard his entire life toarrive where he is today. It is his commitment, drive, passion andvision ‘to do the next right thing’ that has allowed Mercyhealthto develop into the vibrant, patient-focused system it is today.Javon was instrumental in bringing the very best health care closeto home by creating a vertically integrated health system thatemploys world-class physicians and specialists and providesMercyhealth patients with outstanding coordinated care,” said McClellan.“I am very humbled the Board decided to acknowledge my

leadership with this tremendous recognition. It has been a privilege to serve the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsinregion for 30 years. I could not have accomplished any of thiswithout the steadfast commitment of the Mercyhealth familyand my sincere gratitude goes out to our all our physicians, leadership and employee/partners for their passion for makinglives better each and every day. I will continue to do my verybest to live up to this honor working together as a community to improve the health of those we serve,” said Bea. ❖

Effective July 1, Mercyhealthbecame the only state-designatedchildren’s hospital in the northern

Illinois region. The Illinois Departmentof Healthcare and Family Services gavethis designation to Mercyhealth becauseit is the state-designated RegionalPerinatal Center for the northern Illinoisregion, and the fact that Mercyhealth isthe largest Medicaid and charitableprovider in northern Illinois.

As a State of Illinois-designatedPerinatal Center, Mercyhealth providesmedical direction for an 11-county regionin northern Illinois. It is the only Level III(highest level) Neonatal Intensive CareUnit (NICU) in the region, caring forpremature newborns that are critically ill or require surgical intervention.Mercyhealth’s Small Baby Unit cares forthe smallest of micro-preemies born atless than 27 weeks gestation or weighingless than 2.2 pounds. In 2017, Mercyhealth’s hospital on

Rockton Avenue in Rockford was designated a Level II Pediatric TraumaCenter by the Illinois Department ofPublic Health (IDPH). It’s the only one in Rockford and one of only five Illinoishospitals designated as being capable ofproviding comprehensive trauma care to

children who have suffered blunt forcetrauma, penetrating wounds and headinjuries in incidents such as crashes, falls or violent acts. In addition to thePediatric Trauma Center designation,Mercyhealth is recognized as one of onlyten Pediatric Critical Care Centers by theIDPH, which means it provides the high-est level of specialized critical care in its20-bed Pediatric Unit and 7-bed PediatricIntensive Care Unit (PICU). Mercyhealth’s50+ pediatric specialists provide care in26 specialties, including 24/7 neonatologyand 24/7 pediatric hospitalist services.Last year, Mercyhealth partnered with

and children the best possible start in life, and are proud to be the only hospital inthe northern Illinois region to haveearned state designation as a Children’sHospital,” said Javon R. Bea, Presidentand CEO of Mercyhealth. “Caring forthe region’s smallest and youngestpatients, especially those who are lessfortunate, is an honor. We will continueto bring the highest level of neonatal andpediatric care to the region.” ❖

IRA Charitable Rollover Offers Closest Thing to a Free Lunch

8 To make a donation, go to MercyhealthSystem.org/Foundation

Anyone aged 70½ years or older who has not consideredmaking their charitable gifts directly from their IRA is missingout on a terrific benefit. These donors may direct up to

$100,000 from their IRA to charity each year. While this qualifiedcharitable distribution does not generate an income tax deduction,it does apply toward the donor’s minimum required distributionamount and is not includable in their taxable income. With the doubling

of the standard income tax deduction amounts, many will lose the tax benefits of their charitablecontributions. Consequently, having their giftscome directly from their IRA provides a tax, aswell as a cost, efficient alternative. The IRA Charitable Rollover has been with us,

off and on, since 2006 and was made permanent in2015. Prior to its enactment, if a donor wanted to use IRA funds tomake a charitable contribution, they would first have to withdrawthe funds and then make their charitable gift. Although the donorwould get a charitable deduction for the amount of the gift, theywould also have to declare the amount withdrawn as income. If thedonor could not itemize, they would not receive an income tax benefitfor their charitable gift. If they could itemize, the tax savings attributable

to the charitable deduction may not havebeen enough to offset the income tax attributable to the withdrawal. By not recognizing the withdrawal as income, theIRA Charitable Rollover provides incometax benefits whether the donor itemizes ornot. And while the distribution does not generate an income tax deduction, the donormay still be recognized for the gift. The IRA Charitable Rollover must be

made directly by the account custodian toa qualified public charity to be eligible for its benefits. Distributionsto donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or private foundations are not eligible nor are those used to fund charitablesplit interest gifts, such as charitable gift annuities. In addition, distributions that provide the donor with any goods or services(such as tickets to a fundraising event) are not eligible. Nevertheless, despite these restrictions, the IRA Charitable Rollover might wellbe the closest thing to a free lunch that our tax code offers. For more information, contact your tax or financial advisor, or

call the Foundation at (815) 971-4141. ❖
