University Courses Taught Butler University Undergraduate: ED 112 Introduction to Teaching This introductory course helps potential teachers explore the essential questions: How do people learn? What is curriculum and where does it come from? What is the teacher’s role in the school? What role does the community take in the education of children? Do I want to be a teacher?

FYS 102 Wilderness: Act of Creation At the end of this course, students will have an understanding of the environmental movement and how it emerged from our American perspective of “wilderness”. This will include the philosophical, historical, and legal background of wilderness and the environmental movement. Both ecological and sociological approaches to environmental and conservation problems/solutions, current issues, and current research related to these concepts is explored.

SW219 World Geography Through Media and Maps This course introduces students to the discipline of Geography and to a regional geographic approach to understanding our world. The aims of the course are to 1) gain and understanding of geographic concepts and tools, 2) take a holistic approach to understanding earth’s peoples, places, and global problems, and, 3) research a number of themes including environmental change, impacts of globalization, migration, cultural shifts, economic and social development, and different notions of sustainability. The class brings together physical geography, climate, ecology, culture, mapping, politics, history, and economics to investigate contemporary geographic issues at multiple scales. Taught online. ED 244 Concepts of Education A course designed to help students develop social, historical, and philosophical perspectives of schooling including legal, economic, ethical and multicultural foundations for the professional educator in a democratic society and their implications for classroom communication, organization, and management.

NW 260 Earth Systems Science: Human and Environment Interaction This course focuses on the application of scientific principles to achieve understanding of the global earth environment. The human relationship with the environment and possible solutions to environmental problems, such as global climate change, are considered. Includes a fieldwork experience in the Indianapolis community. ED 324 Secondary General Methods The goal of this course is to increase the preservice teachers’ skills and understanding of the teaching process. Specifically this course will help students plan and evaluate a unit of study as well as to practice effective teaching methods and strategies.

ED 327 Curriculum and Instructional Strategies for the Middle Grades The study of a variety of curriculum designs and instructional strategies utilized at the middle grades level. Emphasis is placed on strategies and innovative middle level programs and practices. Trends and issues regarding middle level education are examined. ED 433 Integrated General and Special Methods This course integrates special teaching methods with a practicum in secondary education. The class requires extensive field experiences and will be taught off campus in a high school setting where Butler students will experience secondary special methods taught and modeled by veteran classroom teachers. ED 434 Student Teaching Seminar A professional seminar, which meets during student teaching phases, and focuses on relationships with students, personnel, lesson planning, teaching, extra-curricular expectations, classroom management, professional development, career search and reflection on student teaching issues. Graduate: ED 700: Project/Thesis (M.S.) This course is for those graduate students completing their master’s thesis. Credit and hours arranged (hours to be taken immediately before completion of degree).
