Get ready for fall rose care

MEVRS will have gloves and pruners for sale at our monthly meet-

ings starting in September. These gloves come in small, medium,

large and x-large sizes. A must have as they protect your arms from

the rose prickles. The pruners are just the right size for deadhead-

ing and trimming small rose canes. We hope to have them available

also at the monthly MCC Rose Garden Dead headers mtg. that is

held on the 3rd Saturday of each month.

ROSE CARE CORNER for October , 2014

by Phyllis Henslin, Master Rosarian

After a long hot dry summer, our roses recently have been rewarded with several inches of

natural water from Mother Nature. In a matter of days the roses responded and started put-

ting out new fall growth. Mid September and the first couple of weeks in October is the time

for fall pruning and starting our fertilization program again. We all look forward to seeing

those beautiful fall blooms.

Fertilizer: Give your roses an application of either Gro Ganic or Milorganite organic fertiliz-

er when you finish fall pruning. Apply ½ cup to your large roses and roses in pots ¼ cup.

Alfalfa meal can also be worked into the ground at this time. ½ cup to roses in the ground

and ¼ cup potted roses. In Mid October you can start using an inorganic fertilizer such as

Arizona’s Best Citrus Food, Magnum Gro or Miracle Gro. Follow recommended application

rates.

Epson Salts: Helps promote new basal breaks. Apply ½ cup to large bushes and ¼ cup

for potted roses.

Fish Emulsion: Once buds are pea sized it can be applied every 7-14 days at the rate of 1

TBSP. per gallon of water. It helps increase the color and size in your blooms and gives ex-

tra fast released nutrients.

Remember: Always water Before and After you apply fertilizer.

Insect Control: For quality blooms whether they are for exhibition at our November Rose

Show or for your own enjoyment you need to control thrips. Thrips are tiny insects that

invade the rose buds and cause brown edge damage to the petals. They are highly attract-

ed to light colored blooms but will also damage dark colored rose blooms. Depending on the

size of your garden you can purchase products such as Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower

Insect KILLER, CAPTAIN JACK DEAD BUG OR MERIT. Start your spray program as soon as

buds start to form, peas sized or smaller. Aphids: They are green sucking insects and like

new growth. They can be hosed off with a strong blast of water from your water wand. Also

use your water wand to wash under the leaves to eliminate spider mites.

Warm days and cool evenings can be the right mixture for Powdery Mildew. Hosing your

plants off early in the day can help control it or use products such as Compass, E-Rase or

Banner Max.

September Monsoon storm Update

Courtesy of Phyllis Henslin

The 2014 monsoon season will be remembered for many years as the year of

heavy rains and damaging winds. While the rain was welcomed and the amounts

varied, the micro burst winds were not kind to the rose gardens in the area. The

Rose Garden at MCC was hit severely in August with many trees uprooted and

also many huge limbs broken and on top of many rose beds.

Our latest monsoon storm on Sat. Sept. 27 hit with a vengeance with heavy rain

for several hours and damaging winds once again. This time Mike and Cindy

Jepsen’s rose garden took at severe hit when a huge limb came crashing down

on top of many of their roses. Cindy was able to give her new power saw a good

workout and after 6 hours of intense labor and many sore muscles everything

was cleaned up and ready for the city of Tempe to haul away the huge pile of

branches.

The rain was most welcome for our rose gardens and I recorded a record 10.01

inches of rain at my home. That’s a lot of water for one month in Arizona.

Let's tackle this branch

Trial Membership Program

Yes; it's still available!

All 3-parts of the program are still in full effect, and all very successful in bringing new members to ARS.

A brief summary for those of you who may not be familiar with the program:

The FREE 4-month trial membership is for all NEW local society members. Submit your new members information to Laura Seabaugh monthly, and she will see that they receive this great gift! Send their name, address, phone number, and, most importantly, email address.

$5 4-month trial membership program for all EXISTING local society members AND anyone who fills out a form at a local society event. This means that if Joe Smith attends a pruning demonstration and fills out a trial member application, even without joining your society, he can still take advantage of the 4-month trial membership for just $5.

$10 4-month trial membership is available for the general public. This is on the website and people can sign up online or by calling us.
