In 2019, the new BBBSO Strategic Plan was put into action, representing a
collaborative effort amongst the BBBSO staff, Executive Director and Board of
Directors. The Strategic Plan will help to guide us over the next five years and
advance BBBSO’s mission and values. This new Strategic Plan has allowed BBBSO the
flexibility to respond to our community’s ever-changing needs and have an even
greater impact by expanding our reach. It was an exciting year and certainly marked
one of strategic growth and development on a number of important fronts,
including continuing to build upon our valued partnerships and discovering new
ones, brand recognition, stakeholder engagement and corporate sponsorships.
The 2019 fundraising events were a great success, bringing members of our
community together and celebrating the value of mentorship. BBBSO also continued
to grow our social enterprise initiative, Clothes for Kids’ Sake, by placing more bins
throughout the city and launching door-to-door collection.
As 2020 approached, BBBSO was excited to build on the momentum of 2019 and
celebrate a monumental milestone — 50 years of helping local young people reach
their full potential. A number of community events were planned throughout 2020
to highlight BBBSO, the value of mentorship and the youth we serve, and to
celebrate alongside our donors, supporters and partners. Unfortunately, no one
could have predicted an unprecedented pandemic resulting in the cancellation of
vital fundraising and community recognition events such as our Big Shout Out 50th
Anniversary Dinner and Awards Ceremony or the Henry Burris All-Star Charity Golf
Tournament and Kids’ Camp. While the celebration of this amazing organization and
the important work it does in our community has not gone as planned and this is of
course disappointing for all of us, it just means that we need to do things differently
and think outside the box.
I have no doubt that with the leadership of Executive Director, Susan Ingram and
committed Board of Directors along with the continued support of our funders,
donors, sponsors, champions, and hardworking staff members, BBBSO will come out
of this even stronger. We will continue to make great strides in carrying out our
Strategic Plan by rising to the challenge. We will be innovative, creative and adaptive
in the ways we serve youth, families and the community —laying the strategic
groundwork and paving the way for another successful 50 years.

AGE 15-24—Each youth receives a supportive adult mentor who encourages and empowers them to identify their strengths, explore their passions and achieve their goals, as they transition into becoming adults. Matches spend 8 hours per month connecting with one another, and have access to quarterly BBBSO group events and career readiness workshops.
Elementary school students are paired with mentors 18+ who visit them for one hour each week during school hours. Matches spend time together on school grounds helping students build confidence through engaging activities. This model is also offered to high school and college students as a CO-OP program.
Conversation Club is a weekly after-school group program for newcomer youth (12-18 years old) to Canada. Youth build connections among the group, share their immigration experiences, practice English conversation and presentation skills, receive homework help and learn about Canada.
Go Girls! and Game On! are group programs led by two mentors and focused on physical activity, healthy living and increasing self-esteem. Seven-week sessions take place in the school gymnasium during school hours.

A 2013 study by the Boston Consulting Group found that young people who were mentored in a BBBS 1:1 program were more successful, happier and healthier than those who did not receive mentorship.
Due to higher lifetime incomes, healthier lifestyles and increased community involvement, the study found that for every $1 invested in
BBBS mentoring programs, $18 was returned to society and $23 for those in the most economically disadvantaged groups.

B I G R E A S O N S T O G I V E Littles achieve positive outcomes in life skills
and general well-being. Mentoring helps
kids stay in school, which in turn leads to a
reduction in poverty and unemployment.
A positive role-model goes a long way
towards reducing bullying, which creates
safer schools and neighborhoods. Studies have shown that former Littles will, on average,
earn $315,000 more during the course of their working
lives.
In fact, Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program
participants are also significantly more likely to give
generously to charity or volunteer their time for community
service. And because they’re more likely to earn more, that
puts more dollars back into the community.
