We are, however, blessed by the fact that Donald Milne has joined the team as Lay Pastor for both BSMC and Clifford; although, going forward, Heather Shipman will call on him for help at Wetherby on occasions.

Donald has already proved invaluable to both Clifford and Boston Spa Church communities and, I am sure, will continue to do so – thanks Donald.

Yes, change is inevitable and, as more will be required by our armies of volunteer office holders, I look to all those involved within both Churches to provide support, as and when you are able.

Today, change is happening everywhere in all aspects of our lives. Climate, food, clothing styles, places, relationships, information, access to things. Everywhere we look things keep changing and this means we also have to adjust our ways of thinking, behaving, and dealing with the change constantly. This change can cause more stress and learning, which again leads to more stress in trying to keep up with the change.

In the Bible, two thousand years ago or maybe many years before that even, we see change. We read in Genesis, Chapter 31, that Jacob worked for Laban to marry his daughters and was, twice, cheated by him. So, he told Laban “It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.” There are many other instances of change in the Bible; it is nothing new to our age or times.

So how do we deal with this constant change? How do we keep up with this stress?During ministerial training, we students were told that there were just two answers;

either of which would be the answer to all the questions we might have:1. “Jesus.” 2. “It’s a mystery!”

Thankfully, in this case, Jesus is the answer! Through Jesus we can do all things; as Paul writes in Philippians, Chapter 4,

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”Our constant relationship with Jesus helps us prepare for the problems and

changes of tomorrow. With Jesus in our lives we can overcome our shortcomings and we can go to Him with our problems for refuge.

Why do we know this? Because it is in the Bible. The Letter to the Hebrews mentions that Christ is the same yesterday, today, and

forever. If He came to die on the cross for us yesterday, be assured that He still loves us as much today and therefore is still there for us today. And in the same way, He will be with us and for us, for all our tomorrows.

Christ Jesus is our Lord. He is above all changes. He wills changes, such as these, to give us the opportunity to change. He is looking out for us. We only need to continue to believe and obey.

And as our Circuit, and, in your case specifically, Boston Spa and Clifford Churches, move into another phase in life, I want you to know that whatever challenges these coming changes might seem to be bringing, you won’t be dealing with them on your own. Jesus is there alongside you, all the way, all the time.

Forever He is faithful, forever He is strong, forever He is with us,Forever and ever!!

With every blessing,

Minister’s LetterDear friends,As I write this, I am mindful that the usual order of things would have meant that this would have been my final ‘letter’ in this magazine, and that I would have been preparing our churches for a change in Minister come September. However, by the grace of God and the goodwill of the Circuit, Boston Spa, and Clifford Churches, I was invited to stay on for a further five-year term.

But things don’t stay still for long and I now find myself having to prepare you for a different change in circumstances, within the Circuit, which will have repercussions for Boston Spa and Clifford Churches, as well as the other Churches in the Circuit.

Revd Steve Barlow, the Circuit Superintendent Minister, will be moving from the Circuit, in August, in order to take up a District post. This will leave a gap within the Circuit staff team that we won’t see filled until sometime after Easter next year. In the interim, a member of the District’s ‘Circuit Support Team’, Revd Ruth Parry, will cover some of the administrative duties of the Superintendent; however, she will only be with us on a 20%-time basis, so there will be a shortfall. To that end Revd Mark Stennett and myself will be taking on some of the responsibilities – for example I will be assisting the Circuit Administrator in preparing the quarterly preaching ‘Plan’.

Steve Barlow also had responsibility for three of the Circuit’s churches – this workload will be shared between Heather Shipman, Revd Uell Kennedy and me.

In practice this will mean that, as of July, I will be taking on responsibility for Collingham Church as well as Clifford and Boston Spa. It is also most likely that, when we get our new Superintendent next year, we won’t revert back to the current status quo. Especially as Revd Mark Stennett has taken the option of going back into Stationing, at the end of his 5-year term with the Circuit, in September 2019. This means he will be moving on, to a different Circuit, commencing September 2020.

All this movement will mean that both our Churches will be facing some change, after all; and, consequently, I will not be in a position to provide as much hands-on leadership for Clifford and Boston Spa as I have done to date.

“Church is the people, not the building” – it’s a well known truism and one that, in my experience, is well understood by the folk at Boston Spa Methodist. Our pastoral care for each other is a major strength and of course it extends to those who, for whatever reason can’t make it to Church on a Sunday. Keeping in touch, just knowing that you’re cared about and prayed for can be a lifeline and a major source of comfort.

Church Council has formally authorised me to take this one step further by taking out Communion. I have deliberately phrased it that way because the core of “Communion” is “being at one with”. When sharing bread and wine, we are following Christ’s command to “do this in remembrance of me” and, in ways that we none of us fully understand, uniting ourselves with him. It also though unites those receiving the Communion with the rest of the Church family. I love that the way I can do this is to take out the elements (bread and wafers) from a service where they have already been blessed by Steve as part of our normal Sunday service – making that link with the Sunday Church even stronger.

I can’t think of a better way to finish this than with the words of that very simple Communion hymn (StF 586):

Here is bread, here is wine, Christ is with us, He is with us,Break the bread, drink the wine, He is with us now. Here we are, joined in one, Christ is with us, He is with usWe'll proclaim, till He comes – Jesus crucified

I am genuinely grateful that the Church allows me to share in this way and to play my part in holding this family together.

Boston Spa Methodist Church – Men’s GroupThe Men’s Group meet monthly on a Wednesday night to listen to speakers delivering a wide range of topics. Meetings commence in October and run through to June each year with a Christmas Lunch, usually at Wetherby Golf Club. The group was run by Gordon Hurren successfully for 30 years. Sadly Gordon has had to stand down through ill health but his legacy continues. Recently we have had talks on International Crimefighting by a retired member of the United Nations, we were amazed by the

scope of his topic and look forward to welcoming him again for further insights.

The photograph shows a recent speaker, Michael Wardle giving a talk on his career as an actor from his training in Guildford where he trained alongside Celia Imrie and Bill Nighy through to his first major role in Z Cars. He made appearances in Coronation Street, Heartbeat, I’m Alan Partridge, Last of the Summer Wine and many other tv series. He appeared in Withnail & I alongside Richard E Grant, and a number of other films.

The Group reconvenes in October 2019 and welcomes new members and old. Please contact Brian Marsden 01937 843422 for details.

Soon the room was buzzing as greetings were exchanged, news and views expressed and chit-chat and laughter filled the air.

As breakfast merged into a time of worship and praise Rev. Steve Barlow turned our thoughts to the life of the chapel, reflecting on its past, recognising the challenges we face today, and giving us food for thought as we look to the future.

The childrens’ pictures of the church of the future were impressive... giving us all something to think about as we sang One more step along the world I go.

With cake, candles and a lively rendition of Happy Birthday to you, we concluded our celebrations... until next year.

Clifford Chapel Anniversary Breakfast Special

Boston Spa’s Spring FayreSaturday 8th June was a miserable day weather-wise, but that didn’t seem to deter the many willing volunteers manning the wide range of stalls and providing delicious refreshments during our Spring Fayre held at Wetherby Town Hall. Indeed when I popped in the place was buzzing with happy chatter.

The total raised from the event was £554.37, of which 30% was donated to Martin House, with the remainder for church funds – a great result.

Many thanks for everyone’s hard work on the day but especially to Judith who planned and prepared for the event.

Dance Exhibition andAfternoon Tea at Clifford

On Sunday 9th June, we were treated to an excellent dance display by young people who attend Lisa Harris’s dance classes in Clifford. Tap, ballet and modern dance were all included in the forty minute show. The girls had been working hard over many weeks in readiness for this performance.

Following the exhibition, almost fifty people were treated to a delicious afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones and cakes with as much tea as they could drink.

All in all, it was a successful afternoon raising almost £250 which will be shared between the dance group and Clifford church.

A big thank you to everyone involved for all their hard work.

Bacon sizzled under the grill as we gathered in the schoolroom on Sunday May 17th to celebrate our Chapel Anniversary. A buffet breakfast of fruit juice, cereal and toast was on offer, with a plentiful supply of bacon rolls, tea and coffee, served from the hatch.

An Evening of Comedy and MagicNot the sort of event normally associated with a church and I have to admit that I might have given it a miss with some unlikely excuse about a calendar clash. However due to a combination of loyalty, curiosity and arm twisting we supported the evening with friends.

Despite the many years of listening to Radio 4, only one of the artists was known to me – Jo Enright – unfortunately she was unable to attend due to family illness but was ably replaced by Andy Kind, also not many magicians feature on Radio 4!

The leading act Paul Kerenza got the evening off to a good start with a high standard of humour, not previously heard within the building, including community singing of one hymn to the tune of something else.

The second act Steve Price had the audience confounded with card tricks that defied explanation and a random number board of mathematical surprises, but the main event was the removal of a wristwatch from an unsuspecting member of the audience (me) with the promise to move time forward. The watch was then placed into a pair of ladies tights and whirled around his head until it unfortunately smashed on the floor! After several false searches a sealed loaf was removed from a shopping bag in the corner of the stage, unwrapped and cut open to reveal the undamaged watch with the new time – that’s magic!

After the break the third act, Andy Kind produced more humour ably assisted by Arthur & Jackie Faulkner, who were funnier than the comedian.

Special thanks to Steve for organising and promoting the event (posters even seen in Wensleydale Parish Church) and for his work setting up on the day. Everyone who attended enjoyed a really good evening, those who didn’t missed an evening to remember.

“Alexa, put me in touch with God”Tens of thousands of people have “connected with God” through Amazon’s Alexa thanks to a Church of England app.

The Church said that more than 75,000 people had interacted through a digital assistant since it set up its own voice controlled app a year ago.

Users can access the app by saying “Alexa, open the Church of England”. They can then ask questions about God, or ask to hear prayers and reflections. Instead of the normal Alexa voice, the responses were recorded by clergy and churchgoers, a mix of male and female voices.

Hilda Day 1925-2019On Thursday 6th June, following her death on 14th May, members of the church family and friends joined together with Hilda’s family to celebrate her life, at Boston Spa Methodist Church in a service led by Revd Steve Jakeman.

Hilda was born, in Holbeck on 3rd September 1925 where she lived with her parents and younger sister, Iris, until she married Frank Day in 1945, when they moved to Hunslet.

Hilda’s childhood was dogged by illness which necessitated long stays in hospital with chest problems, which she had to contend with throughout her life. These long stays in hospital interrupted her education, but made her an avid reader, and through this she supplemented her education.

Hilda worked in various places, as the family moved around, but most of all she would describe herself as a homemaker; knitting, baking, jam-making and being a good housewife, and she loved gardening. She was also an expert at wrapping presents, a skilled developed when she worked in a Drapers warehouse, before the dust and fibers affected her chest so much, that she moved into the office.

Hilda and Frank had two daughters, Christine and Linda, they had a happy family life, enjoying many camping holidays together, and loved walking, always including their dog in those walks.

Sadly, Frank died in 1994, leaving Hilda on her own, as the girls had married and moved away. Initially, following Frank’s death, Hilda moved to Chapel Allerton to be nearer the girls, but she didn’t really settle, and, when Linda and her family had moved to Bramham, the fiercely independent Hilda took it upon herself to move to Boston Spa, finding a flat in Orchard House. She loved Boston Spa, the Methodist Church, the people, and always believed it was the best thing she had done.

Eleven years ago, Christine, Hilda’s eldest daughter, died, which was a great shock to the family, but drew them closer together. Then seven or eight years ago Hilda began to lose her sight, leading her to discover the RNIB Talking Book Service which became her lifeline. A further blow struck Hilda last year when her younger sister Iris died.

Latterly her health had deteriorated but she had been able to remain at Orchard House thanks to a team of professional carers.

So, it was remembering the much-loved character that was Hilda, well respected by friends and family alike, that they joined together to say goodbye to her; missing her but glad that she is now at peace.

We give thanks to God for the life and love of a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Hilda Day.

But we can worship ..........This week – as this is being written – links two special days in the church year.

Last Sunday was Whit Sunday, when we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit to those whose lives are open to receive him. Jesus always keeps his promises – he promised this at the Last Supper, and again at his ascension.

Next Sunday is Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate the wonder of God who is, and who has always been, one and yet three. We actually celebrate that mystery every time we receive or say the traditional blessing at the end of worship. How can this be?

We experience God in different ways at different times. God the creator and source of everything was everywhere before time and space began. We see him in the wonders of the universe he created. Some of those wonders are light-years distant and some are literally under our feet. We see God in the power of love to care for others, and in our certainty that he cares for us and wants the best for us. We see him in our sense of right and wrong, of what is good and what is bad. We know that we let him down again and again.

We also see him coming into the world in human form in Jesus, showing us how to live, healing and teaching and even being prepared to die for us to bring us back to God. John tells us that Jesus did not come into being at Bethlehem; he was God and part of God’s purpose from the very beginning. He still is. We meet him but do not recognise him in other people every day.

The Holy Spirit is God in action in the world. He was the power behind creation and still is. He makes the love and presence of God real in life, he challenges and calls and empowers and comforts us. He makes God real to us in the circumstances of our lives.

Traditionally we think of God as “him”. We cannot limit him in any way. Some things we can never understand in this life. But we can worship.

24 HOUR SERVICE

The Autumn District Synod this year will be incorporated into a new event – “Flourish”. This is a weekend event in Scarborough from 7.30pm on Friday 18th October to 1.00pm on Sunday 20th for all Churches and Circuits to get together for fellowship and worship.

A varied programme will include opportunities to stretch your mind, develop your spirituality, increase your understanding of church, express your creative side, and, have fun.

A crèche and children’s programme will be offered on Saturday morning and evening, and a youth stream will run across the whole weekend. The main worship event, on Saturday evening, will be led by acclaimed worship leader Lou Fellingham and the main speaker will be David Wilkinson (renowned astrophysicist and theologian).

Jean Henzell 1938-2019On June 12th, following her death on 18th May, members of the church and friends met with Jean’s family to celebrate her life in a Thanksgiving Service led by Revd Steve Jakeman.

Jean was born, Jean Metcalfe, on 24th July 1938 in West Cornforth, County Durham where Jean’s father worked in the mining industry. At the age of one she moved to Pegswood near Morpeth where Mike’s Uncle Dodds was headteacher at the local school. It was through this link, when the Metcalfe family finally ended up in Seaton Delaval, that Jean and Mike met.

The meeting took place on the platform of Seaton Delavel station, where she must have wondered who this rather forward young man was as he greeted her with the words, “You must be Jean Metcalfe!”. This obviously didn’t faze her as, from this initial meeting, a great romance began, which blossomed into what was to become a long and happy marriage.

Jean and Mike were married in 1962 and moved to Whitley Bay. Two years later they moved, for what was to be four happy years, to Saltburn-by-the-Sea. It was during this period that Ian was born, in 1965. In 1968 they arrived in Boston Spa, and a year later David was born. However, they were not to remain in Boston Spa because, in 1974 following a promotion for Mike, they moved to Congleton.

Boston Spa was to see them again in 1982 when they moved back to the village, to a house on the High Street, where they stayed for the best part of 25 years until they moved into their current bungalow.

Both Jean and Mike were keen bird watchers; latterly Jean spent many happy hours, as her mobility worsened, watching the birds in their garden. They were also keen caravanners and travelled for over 25 years throughout England, Wales and particularly Scotland; taking the ’van right up to Orkney and Shetland.

Jean’s favourite pastimes were needlework, crochet and, especially, singing. Jean started singing in the local chapel choir and at sixteen was singing with the Newcastle and Gateshead Choral Society.

Jean was an active member of Boston Spa Methodist Church, singing in the choir and various theatrical productions, and, in particular, being President of the Women’s Friendship Group; leading the singing when no accompanist was available, and regaling everyone with readings from her ‘Geordie Bible’, bringing it to life in her own special way.

Jean had three great interests in life – singing, chapel and family; she was very proud of her sons and her two grandchildren, James and Jenny.

It was on a very wet June morning that Boston Spa Chapel was filled with the sound of singing, sadness, and laughter as we gave thanks for Jean’s life; missing her but glad that she is now at peace.

We give thanks to God for the life, and love, of a wife, mother grandmother, and friend, Jean Henzell.
