HIGH TECH GENDER SELECTION METHODS

The high tech sex selection methods are draw from two existing and popular infertility treatments such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) & AI (Artificial Insemination).

IVF is a well known fertility treatment usually suggested when all other artificial methods have failed. Starts with prescription of fertility drugs to stimulate the female’s ovaries in order to produce more eggs, instead of single egg you usually produce in your each menstrual cycle, the process is completely carried out outside the body. Once eggs mature enough for removal, your doctor removes number of eggs from your ovaries under general anesthesia and then fertilize the retrieved eggs with sperm in a cultural dish in laboratory under certain conditions.

After three or five days, doctor selects healthy embryos and places them in your uterus with the help of a thin catheter. Your age, health history and quality of eggs usually decides the number of eggs inserted to achieve pregnancy.

PRE- IMPLANTATION GENETIC DIAGNOSIS

(PGD)

PGD was first introduced back in 1989 to initially help couples who have high risk of genetic disorder and have chances to have children with the same condition. As high techniques are used in this procedure to make its result accurate, today it is one of the most effective gender selection procedures available. Also it is suggested for women who have a history of recurrent miscarriage.

The procedure is followed by IVF. The embryologist in IVF, try to determine which embryo has the best chance to implant by microscope, however in PGD, the embryos are tested thoroughly for sex and genetic abnormalities. Unlike IVF where more than one embryo is transferred, in PGD fewer embryos are transferred because they have already tested the best ones that are likely to achieve healthy pregnancy.

PGD adds additional cost to IVF cycle around $3000 to $5000 to the tab.

MICROSORT

Introduced in late 1995, MicroSort is 88% successful in choosing baby girls and about 74% successful in choosing baby boys.

The technique is basically separates the girl producing sperm from the boy producing sperm variety. And then the desired gender is placed into the female’s uterus via Artificial Insemination (AI). MicroSort based on the premise that girl- producing sperm carry X- chromosomes is quite bigger than boy- producing sperm carry Y- chromosomes.

In this procedure, doctor color a sperm sample with fluorescent dye and use a laser to illuminate the dye. Bigger X- chromosome absorbs the dye and shine brighter than Y- chromosome.

The procedure was first available for clinical trial and cost around $3,000 per AI cycle, however fertility drugs if used, the additional cost would be around $2,000 and cost an average of $12,000 with an IVF cycle. The procedure is no longer available.
