Research InstituteFuture Transport and CitiesLets set a definition
Not a seedling anymore, but still evolving
Currently a single definition of what is i4.0 is a moving target.
Siemens and a few other organisations including the
German Government several years ago planted a banner,
people and organisations rallied to that banner and started
germinating that seedling. Setting out an expanding vision of
the factory of the future and potential integration.
Now we are seeing what and who is drawn to develop the
idea into reality. It has many facets and all interconnected.

Parts of the journey are still a bit foggy
Manufacturing's focus –more than the part to measure and manage
Big Data
To some it’s quite confusing
Cyber-Physical Systems
or "smart" systems are
co-engineered interacting
networks of physical and
computational
components. These
systems will provide the
foundation of our critical
infrastructure, form the
basis of emerging and
future smart services,
and improve our quality
of life in many areas.

Modern sensor are already big data
Billions of points of data are collected every day, mostly discarded that same day
Often summarised into a pass / fail or for constructing geometry to meet Technical Product Specification
Going forward every piece of data collected can be mined to inform any interested party
Point clouds or facetted surface / mesh creation

Research InstituteFuture Transport and CitiesPlanning for not reacting to
New factories of the future will not be left to chance.
Factory Metrology skills will shift from a mostly post
production activity to pre-production planning processes.
When the start button is pressed you will already want to
know the answers to a high degree of certainty

“I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science, whatever the matter may be.”Lord Kelvin
