Party-Line Subscribers are Urged to Hold the 1

Telephone Only Five Minutes

FIVE MINUTES is usually sufficient to complete an ordinary I business transaction by telephone. ;

If the telephone com1)any saves wo1·k when party lines are

"tied up" for l~ng periods while people are talking, the policy is 1

unfair to its other patrons and the practice is discouraged.

It is not a kind act to compel your neighbor to wait more

than FIVE MINUTES whlJe you hold the line- a call for a doc- ! tor or an important business transaction may be delayed.

"Do unto others as you would have

them do unto you." is a good rule.

The company does not permit the at tachment of unauthor-

ized devices or instruments to, or to connect with its lines or

equipment. If persisted in, the Telephone Company reserves the

right to cancel the contract of the offending subscriber upon ten

d~ys' notice and to remove its instruments and ·equipment. I

I .. ~· Carroll Telephone Co.

WHAT TELEPHONE USERS CAN DO TO HELP THE SERVICE

CALL BY NUMBER, NOT BY NAME I!

Speak distinctly, talk into the mouthpiece. If you do not allow the sound wave to enter the mouthpiece, thence to the transmitter, how can you expect the i·eceiving party to hear your conversation?

Remember this : No community every really enjoyed firstclass telephone s·ervice unless the Telphone Company had the intelligent and hearty co-operation of its subscribers and the public.

Speak gently, remember your voice is the sounding board of your soul.

Golden Rule-Answer calls promptly as you expect to be answered.

Report names of habitual borrowers of telephone service. We will see them about installing telephones for their own use.

.Listen carefully to the number the Operator repeats to you, after you have given your order ; she may have misunderstood your order .

Answer your bell promptly, a ring means a friend calling you, do not make him wait, failure ·on your part to answer at once may be the means of causing your party to hang up the receiver , if such is the case the Operator has no way of telling who called.

Call by number only. Be brief, but courteous to the Operator-we require them to be so to you. They have no time to converse with you; they do not know subscribers names, they deal entirely with numbers.

Tur all changes or removals, notify the Operator and when leaving the city, so a record can be made and the Operator will. know why you do not answer calls.

Call Bookkeeper for information regarding telephone rentals and contracts.

In case of fire, call Central, and give distinctly the location of the fire and number of your residenoe; be sure yOiu are cor-1·ectly understood before you leave the telephone. The Fire Department will be notified.

If your troubles or complaints are not attended to promptly and satisfactorily, please report to the Office Manager, No. 62

A charge will be made for repairing broken telephones covering actual cost of material and labor.

Subscribers are responsible for all toll charges for messages sent from their res1)ective instruments and should refer all unautho1·ized persons to pay stations for such service.

Do not expect perfection in telephones service. Telephones like people, have their weaknsss.

There are al ways three parties to a telephone call-the person calling, the t elephone operator and the person called-an arc human, all must co-operate-courtesy will help all.

Use the Directory-do not try to r emember numbers, do not guess, look it up.

Do not 1Use the telephone during a storm.

Hello means nothing. Please sta.te either the telephone num

ber, the name of the firm or the party answering. It will save valuable time and needless questions by doing so. You will help your service.

PLEASE CONSULT this Dir1ectory before making calls. "INFORMATION" does not give out numbers for names which can be found in this Directory. OPERATORS know numbers not names.

Please read and follow instructions and your service will improve.

HERE'S A SAFE RULE FOR EVERBODY: Consult the telephone book. Don't rely on your memory. You may remember a number perfectly-but it may be someone else's number and not the one Y'OU want. No doiubt "Central" makes mistakes. Voices vary in distinctness ov·er the phone and the operator is human, after all. It is only when you do your best to call the right number and speak distinctly that you've done your part. It's then up to the operator.

ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS: Does any other company or store in town wait on me so uniformly promptly or cause so little direct loss of time, as does the Telephone Company?

"Can I get the service of a clerk, a sales girl, a cashier, or of anyone else nearly as quickly, whenever I want them, as I can those of a Telephone Operator?"

We kindly ask you to help us help Y'OU to give best service possible. It takes both operator and patron working together.

Appointment and Messenger Calls Appointment calls are "person to person" calls, the order for

which, provides that communication is to be arranged to take place at a specified time.

Messenger calls are person to person calls, requiring the use of a messenger, to secure attendance of a designated person, at one of the public stations, at the distant point. The rate is the same as the particular party rate, plus any charge for messenger service.

The above rates are com1mted on the day rate, whether the call is made dur ing the day, or during the night.

Report charges apply under the same general condition as specified, for "person to person" calls.

Telephone Toll Hates TO OUR PATRONS:

Y.our attention is called to the advantages, and economies which may be had under om· present toll rate schedule. State to the toll operator the class of service you wish, when making your call.

Collect Calls "Collect Calls" are the calls on which charges are reversed;

that is, one to be collected from the subscribers at the distant station, at which the call is completed.

Person to Person Calls Orders for person to person service, are accepted only under

the condition that a limited charge; (to be known as a "report charge") will be made. When the order is to establish communication with a particular person, anrl conversation is held, the "person to person" rate applies. This service requires a greater amount of operating effort, and the use of the cil'cuit so that rnte for such calls is about one-fourth gn~ater than the "station to stat ion" rate.

Vacation Rates A rate will be cha1·ged for the period when a subscribe1· is ab

sent from his residence; one-fo ur th the r egular rate will be charged when a subscriber is absent for a longer period than one month. No reduction will be made in the rate for a shorter period than one month.

*The abovie are base rates to which shall be added a line charge of $.25 per month per quarter mile or fraction thereof beyond the corporate limits of Delphi.

All bills shall be paid monthly or quarterly in advance, at the option of the subscribers. If monthly, net rate shall be charged if paid on or before the tenth day of the month in which service is rendered. Otherwis·e the gros rate will be charged. If quarterly, the net rnte shall be charged if paid on or before the tenth day of the first of the month of the quarter; otherwise the grol:ls rate shall be charged, provided that iri all cases the additional $.10 per month shall be considered on a monthly and not quarterly basis. ' Report Charges

Will be made in the following cases, when it is impossible to establish communicat ion between particular persons, and cannot be sectwed within one hour. A report charge applies, (1) when the ·called party refuses to talk; (2) when the report is r etm·ned, and the person ·called is "out, and will return at a specified time," or "out, and time of r eturn unknown," or "absent f1'0m the city." This charge is to cover compensation for the operating work performed, and use of toll circuits, and is about one-fourth of the "station to station" rate.

In any case where a report applies the minimum charge is five cents.

Standard Toll Evening and Night Rates The following reduced rates, fur evening and night s,ervice, on

a "station to staion" basis only, are effective: Between 7 :00 p. m. and 8 :30 p. m. The station to station rates

ar€ approximately one-fourth less than the day rate and are known as "Evening Rates." .

Between 8 :30 p. m. and 4 :30 a. m., the station to station rntes a1·e approximately one-half less than the day rate and are known as "night rates."

For the purpose of applying night rates, the time of day at the point at which a "station to station" message originates, is used.

These 1·ed!uced rates on station to station messages do not apply when the rates are thirty-five cents or less. The minimum evening and night rate is thirty-five cents.

Station to Station Mes.sages A more efficient and economical use of the toll lines. You are

requested when making your call to do so on the most economical basis. We urge you to use the "station to station" message whenever possible. Your order should specify the telephone station called, either by telephone numbe1·, or by name of the subscriber station, stating, "I will talk to anyone.''
