COLD APPLICATIONin Training & Competition

This book presents studies and results which prove that cold

application has a positive influence on athletes’ performance

and regeneration ability. Considering the control mechanisms

and principles of thermoregulation, the effects of cold application

should be utilized in training and competition.

NEW APPROACHES TO SPORT AND EXERCISE PSYCHOLOGY

The field of sport, games, physical activity, and body culture is

changing as society is changing. Sport and exercise psychologists

should include new theoretical approaches in their thinking,

contextualize their research, and apply new strategies for sports

psychology interventions.

PERIODIZATION IN RUGBY

Rugby is a sport of technical finesse, tactical boldness, and

complex physical development. Good physical conditioning

training principles are presented to you as the physiological

demands of the sport are explained and concepts such as power,

speed, and endurance are addressed.

Prof. Dr. Elmar Wienecke

PERFORMANCE EXPLOSION IN SPORTS

This book offers new revolutionary findings in the area of

individual micronutrient therapy in top and recreational athletes

that has lead to the preservation of connective tissue function

(ligaments, tendons, cartilage), thereby facilitating injury-free

training. The new findings and practical help will be a significant

milestone for future generations and a good source of advice for

athletes, trainers, physical therapists, and physicians.

Asker Jeukendrup (ed.)

SPORTS NUTRITION From Lab to Kitchen

Bridging the gap between science and practice is important for

athletes so they can easily understand and implement changes

in nutrition that help performance or recovery. Leaders in the

field reveal the latest developments in nutrition science, helping

distinguish fact from fiction.

IAAF/Gert-Peter Brüggemann/Dietmar Koszewski/Harald Müller (eds.)

BIOMECHANICAL RESEARCH PROJECT

The purposes of this project are to update the database of

biomechanical parameters of elite athletes, to support coaches

and athletes with information on individual techniques, to

improve knowledge of limiting factors of athletic performance,

and to generate gender-specific data.

IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations)

NEW STUDIES IN ATHLETICSBiomechanical Research Project

Two of the field’s top scientists were asked to lead a set of studies

at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. Under their direction,

research teams collected extensive data on five events. Back in the

laboratories, the data was carefully analysed and compiled into the

reports that appear in this volume.

METHODS OF RESEARCH IN SPORT SCIENCESQuantitative and Qualitative Approaches

This handbook consists of a solid theoretical and scientific

rationale presented in a simple language. It also presents a

balance between quantitative and qualitative methods of

research and analysis and advocates for problem-focused

methodology and mixed design when required.

DOPING AND DOPING CONTROL IN EUROPE

Biochemical manipulations and the favorable drug tendencies of

today‘s society not only threaten sports and the movement

culture but also our public health. Today‘s young generation

serves as a measure of this. It is one of the biggest dangers that

threatens modern high-performance sport.

Zsolt Radak (ed.)

EXERCISE AND DISEASES Prevention through Training

Regular exercise increases the average lifespan and quality of

life. These favorable effects are partly mediated by the fact that

regular exercise prevents a number of diseases. The book was

designed to provide a summarized basis about the effects of

exercise on the most common diseases.

OLYMPIC EDUCATION

The term “Olympic” is defined in the broader context of the

Olympic Games movement and as a global purpose and new

challenge for a balanced physical, social, and moral education.

Olympic ideals are a modern challenge for sport education and

for the development of essential life skills.

Jan Tolleneer/Roland Renson (eds.)

OLD BORDERS, NEW BORDERS, NO BORDERS Sport and Physical Education in a Period of Change

Forty papers on comparative and international aspects of sport

and physical education were presented in July 1998 in Belgium

at the eleventh conference of the International Society for

Comparative Physical Education and Sport. These contributions

are discussed in this publication.

HIGHER EDUCATION IN SPORT IN EUROPE From Labour Market Demand to Training Supply

Academic and professional aspects of sport programs in higher

education and the labour market are addressed by the project for

‘Aligning a European Higher Education Structure in Sport Science.’

The European Education Policy, the Bologna Process and the

Tuning program are explored in detail.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: A READER

The reader is a collection of contributions on a range of modern

issues in physical education. It offers an interdisciplinary

approach of philosophical, physiological, psychological,

sociological, and pedagogical perspectives on the academic and

professional study of physical education.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND CONGRUENCE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT

This collection of contributions on topics in international,

comparative, and cross-cultural studies in physical education

and sport, centered on cultural divergence and congruence, is

comprised of 25 papers presented at the 10th ISCPES Biennial

Conference in Hachi-ohji, Japan.

THE PARALYMPIC GAMES

Aspects of the organization, development, and life of

Paralympians, team management, and coaches are addressed

in this book. The question is asked as to whether the

Paralympics empowers individuals with a disability or if the

Paralympics are perhaps just a sideshow to the major Olympic

event.

NEW HORIZONS IN SPORT FOR ATHLETES WITH A DISABILITY VOL. 1

The proceedings of the second edition of the International

Paralympic Committee‘s VISTA Conference series comprise 62

contributions by international experts. The result is an

impressive multi-disciplinary survey of the expanding field of

(elite) sport of athletes with a disability.

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The book provides an insight into the current situation of PE in

schools across Europe as a forerunner to addressing PE-related

existing and emerging issues in various contexts. It is aimed,

primarily, at students pursuing entire programs or discrete

courses and modules in the broad area of PE and related areas

such as health and exercise science.

YOUNG ATHLETES AND EDUCATIONA European Perspective for Student-Athletes

The book includes interesting topics like selection methods in

youth sports, educational options for elite athletes, elite

athletes’ career development. The papers should stimulate

many scientists to pursue research in this important field.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON OF PHYSICAL EDUCATIONConcepts, Problems, Prospects

Even though physical education is considered as a basic right of

all children, views vary on what comprises “quality physical

education.” The situation is compared by means of a worldwide

survey. This is the first publication to provide information on the

state of PE around the world.

GENDER, SPORT AND LEISURE

Reporting data and case studies, this volume is offered as a

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT

There are two major trends that currently affect a great number

of our societies and they are well reflected in the world of sport

and physical education: the trend towards globalization and the

trend towards individualization. Above all, the new

communication super highways and increasing migration have

contributed to the idea that sport is a homogeneous cultural flow

across national and state boundaries.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

eight topics of Physical Education, it contains “Research Articles”

and “Sport International” with relation to Physical Education.

Additional to that general “Information”, “Book Information/

Book Review”, “IT News relating to Sport Pedagogy”, “ICSSPE

News”, “ISCPES News”, “ENSSEE News” as well as information on

“Upcoming Events” are included in the IJPE. A strict double-blind

review process is applied for all research articles within the IJPE.

Editors of the journal are Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. H. Haag and M.

Holzweg. Editorial assistant of the journal is N. Wilcock.

Erich Müller (ed.)
