MFL Writing Tasks

Comments relation of the spoken to the written

word needs to be taught activelyLabelling the map of France from an

OHT will be very challenging for some learners.

These pupils can be supported by having a photocopy of the map having a photocopy which gives

part labels to the towns eg P_ _ IS having a photocopy as above,

which has the real names given elsewhere for copying into the correct place

Comments A encourages learners to think about

meaning when writing. Copying should be meaningful (eg

categorisation of animals into 2/4 legged or liked/disliked),

Jumbling letters within words can be confusing for some learners – consider dyslexic pupils

Consider target language use for rubrics – advantages/disadvantages

The inclusion of an example can be appropriately supportive for some, but reduce challenge for others.

acrostic das Schulleben (school life) allows

pupils to add firstly subjects and then opinions, working at word, then sentence level. A paragraph summary would move to text level.

Poetry is used to allow pupils to give their own opinions and be creative, even at this early stage.

Manipulation/Practice

Comments Pupils have writing

frame to support practice using variety of verbs and persons of the verb.

Such a frame gives scope for considerable practice

eg du + 12 = du hast eine Wurst gegessen

eg you (formal) + 14? Haben Sie Pommes Frites gegessen?

It would be possible to differentiate by:

Removing the alternatives given as support

Providing 2 alternatives only in the gaps

Having more/fewer gaps

ICT and Making Language My Own (Production)

Comments Many possibilities for brochures, posters etc, with

generic, content free software, widely in use in schools. Many possibilities also with hardware eg digital

cameras, for pupils to make professional products. NB ICT to promote MFL learning, not just ICT and increased motivation.

Generic software does not have in built spell-checking so the teacher needs to consider this aspect of drafting/redrafting.

See ICT in MFL booklet.
