Sub: Guidelines for RNC-NODE B connectivity using ports on Multiplay N/Es.Ref: G.MI BBNWI Multiplayl 2013-141 dated 10-4-2013

With reference to the above subject it is requested to follow the followingguidelines while connecting RNC I Node-B's to Multiplay network. This would avoidconfusion and also downtime of RNC I Node Bs I BTS in case of failures.

It is observed that there is multifold increase in utilizing broadband accessnetwork as transmission media for connecting RNCs I Node Bs and BlS: Thisscenario is increasing day by day and there is a need to evaluate and analyse theMobile traffic by node-in-charges to meet the requirements and ability of RPRs (rings)before connecting any elements other than broadband N/Es. Else, this would causedisturbances in the broadband network and its performance. Such frequent scenariosare leading to slow speed issues also.

It is also requested to check the compatibility of intermediate equipments viz.Routers, switches, transmission equipment of various vendors and technologies whileconnecting to broadband N/Es. These equipment I aggregators are not visible throughRPR eMS and is not possible to isolate & analyze the failures.

It is understood that these intermediate equipments are used to connect multipleNode Bs to a single OCLAN I RPR port. Centralized Failure of intermediate equipmentcan affect huge chunk of traffic and can also affect the all NEs if any looping in one ofthe equipments. /

This office had issued many guidelines time to time to avoid failures orinterruption in services.

ANNEXURE-1

Guidelines for RNC-NODE B-BTS connectivity using Broadband Multiplay Network

1. RNC is to be preferably connected on the port of RPR T1 to ensure redundancy in theconnection. However, the same can be connected on T2 also. Since the OCLANs are not in theResilient Packet Ring RNC connection on OCLAN should be strictly avoided.

2. In order to establish connectivity of one RNC with the NODE-Bs on the other Rings, T1 ports ofother ring has to be connected to RNC using external media.

3. Node-B can be connected using FE I GE ports of RPR T1/T2 and OCLAN switches.

4. While connecting the Node B on the OCLAN switch following points are to be taken care.a. Uplink capacity of OCLAN shall be 1 GE (minimum). Hence, action may be taken to

upgrade the uplink to GE before sending requests for NODE-B connection

b. No. of NODE-Bs proposed to be connected on the same OCLAN shall be decided afterassessing the total traffic from all the services on the OCLAN uplink port. While assessingthe requirement of uplink capacity, number of DSLAMs connected and traffic thereon, traffic from the NEs on the cascaded chain, no. of ILLs serviced, traffic from Wi-MAX BTSetc. are to be taken into account.

5. While utilizing the ports on RPR T1I T2 and OCLAN it may be ensured that sufficient spare portsare kept for maintenance purposes

6. While utilizing the ports (especially GE PORT) in DSLAM / OL Ts for connecting NODE Bs, itmay be ensured that sufficient Uplink Bandwidth up to 1000 Mbps (1 GE) is eveitebte= so asto curtail under-utilization of GE ports.

ANNEXURE-2

When Node B I BTS is to be connected using OCLAN Port, following factors need to be checkedand reviewed for a good connectivity and the information shall also be provided in addition to theabove

1. Uplink capacity of OCLAN - Uplink should be at least 1GE As and when the trafficexceeds 70% it is recommended to add link(s) further.

2. Cascading of OCLANs - Only one slave per master OCLAN is advisable and not a chain ofcascading. Again, it depends on uplink utilization and should be maintained with in 70%. Ifit exceeds, arrangements are to be made to migrate traffic to a less loaded OClAN orRPR

3. Keep a check on how many DSLAMs are connected to the OCLAN including the ones inthe cascading chain of OClAN as per the above mentioned standards again.

4 No. of Wi-MAX BTS configured on the OClAN.

5. Total No. of Node-Bs connected / proposed to be connected on the ring.(Using all types of connections including the connection through DWDM IMADM/Switch etc.)

Trouble shooting:

(a) RNC-NODE B connectivity is established on Layer 2. NOC will be able to checkconfiguration on the Multiplay port, the status of port & learning of MAC 10 of 3Gequipment on the downlink and uplink port of the NE.

(b) During failure of services from Node B / RNC, the node in charge should ensure that thereis no issue in the media, transmission equipment by checking the power levels in allsections of the media, CRC in media etc. It is also requested to check Routers I Switches,Node B I RNC itself by vendor specific trouble shooting procedures before escalating torespective NOC through Remedy.

(c) Multiplay switches do not need any special configuration for connecting to RNC/Node Bsand hence the support of Vendors who supplied Node B I RNC should be taken foranalyzing & resolving the compatibility & configuration issues during connectivity andservice failures too.

(d) Please note that Speed on the ports where NODE-B is connected will be restricted to 50Mbps at port level as each sector needs 15M bps (3 sectors X 15 = 45 Mbps Max.). Anyfurther increase in port bandwidth may cause choking in the broadband traffic.

ANNEXURE-5

Redundancy in the links in Multiplay Network elements

In Multiplay network, redundancy of links between the elements can be achieved Using LACP (linkaggregation control protocol),

FEATURES:

1. Using LACP ( link aggregation control protocol):Link Aggregation is also called Trunk; it refers to bundling multiple physical ports to be a logical port,

to implement load balance of in/out flow in each member port.

Redundancy configured using LACP will work when both the elements connectedwith links should be support LACP.

In LACP, multiple ports can be configured as trunk group (depending on availability ofports and technology support on both the elements), whenever one port goes down other port / portswill share the traffic automatically,

LACP is possible in same Network element (RPR) in two different ports of same card ordifferent cards. It is preferred to provide links using ports in different cards rather than providing allthe links in the same card

IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO GO IN FOR PROVIDING REDUNDANT LINKS USINGLACP AS EXPLAINED ABOVE.

2. Tested and found that LACP is not working in following cases in multiplay network.i. One port in tier1 and another port in other tier2 in the same ring

ii. One port in one ring another port in another ring of same BNG

iii, One port in one ring another port in another ring of different BNG

iv. One port in MPLS another port in Multiplay network element.

v. Whenever one of the links are connected using DWDM or MADM the port will beshowing 'UP' in Multiplay NEs even on failure of the DWDM or MADM system andhence the packets on the other links will be dropped (Only dark fiber connectedelements support LACP).

Hence, requests for LACP configurations as mentioned in case (i) to (v) above need not beescalated to NOC.
