PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY SEMINAR XLVRegistration Information

PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Gastón E. Zilleruelo, M.D. ASSOCIATE PROGRAM DIRECTORS:

Carolyn L. Abitbol, M.D. and Michael Freundlich, M.D.FOUNDED BY: José Strauss, M.D.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe Miami Pediatric Nephrology Seminar now in its 45th year is an unique international gathering of pediatric and adult nephrologists, pediatricians, internists, general practitioners, renal pathologists, neonatologists, pediatric urologists, transplant surgeons, nurses, nutritionists and allied health professionals from all over the United States and the world sponsored by the University of Miami, Leonard Miller School of Medicine and Holtz Children’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The content is basic, the approach is clinical. Conceptual and practical problems are featured in a balance of formal presentations followed by informal discussions. Topics covered relate research advances to the understanding of mechanisms of renal disease, pathological expressions and clinical diagnosis and management. All registrants have opportunities to be involved in a dynamic exchange of information, experience, and insight. Selection of topics, faculty and format are based on suggestions from past Seminar participants and current questions. The 45th Pediatric Nephrology Seminar and the preceding Renal Pathology Course will include a total of 14 Sessions from March 8-11, 2018. The Pre-Seminar Renal Pathology Course is an intensive, one full day comprehensive course focused on updated new classifications and covering all aspects of nephro-pathology starting with sample processing and transition to glomerular, tubular, cystic as well as systemic and metabolic disorders affecting pediatric and young adult patients finalizing with a clinico-pathologic correlations interactive Session. The Pediatric Nephrology Seminar will cover a wide range of topics including Genetics and Precision Medicine, Neonatal Nephrology, Nephrology for the General Practitioner, Hypertension and Endocrine Nephrology, New Approaches and Management of Glomerular Disorders and CKD, Transplant Clinical Challenges, Nutrition and Growth in CKD (Workshop), Dialysis/Critical Care Nephrology and an special Session dedicated to the Recognition of Challenging Patients as “Heroes” in Pediatric Nephrology. In addition, there will be an optional “hands-on” workshop dealing with CRRT and Critical Care Pediatric Nephrology at the end of the Seminar specifically developed for physicians in-training. All the topics selected have high clinical research relevance and have not been covered in this format by other conferences in recent years. The Seminar will feature 22 distinguished Guest Faculty and 21 Local Faculty who will provide expertise and cordial exchanges including several panel discussions and Meet the Professor Luncheons. We hope you will enjoy attending this newly structured scientific meeting.

CONFERENCES OBJECTIVES1. Diagnose and treat the most frequent conditions by identifying recent

discoveries in basic, translational and clinical research in selected areas of pediatric nephrology, and assessing its impact in research development and precision medicine.

2. Recognize and assess routine handling, processing and reporting of kidney biopsies with a systematic approach in the diagnosis of medical renal diseases and updated classifications.

3. Establish appropriate diagnosis and management of children with various medical renal diseases by assessing the histopathologic findings obtained from kidney biopsies.

4. Assess and utilize genetic diagnostic testing for use by the practitioner approach to children with inherited pediatric nephrology disorders.

5. Recognize the pathogenesis, diagnose complications and select appropriate management of neonates with kidney diseases.

6. Recognize common kidney disorders confronted by the general practitioner and discuss timely referral to the specialist.

7. Use recombinant growth hormone therapy in the management of children with growth impairment associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and assessment of nutrition abnormalities in children with this condition.

8 . More effectively manage children with hypertension, CKD, dialysis and transplant and its complications.

9. Evaluate pathogenesis, complications and management of infants and children with glomerular disorders and chronic kidney diseases.

10 Review practical protocols for the management of patients with extracorporeal therapies in the critical care setting.

Upon completion of the Seminar, participants should be able to define the various etiologies and physiologic conditions relating to these subjects,

select appropriate diagnostic procedures, understand that which may occur as a result of the disease process or treatment, and indicate appropriate therapy. In addition, those able to do basic or clinical research focused on pediatric nephrology challenges, will be stimulated by those knowledgeable about research issues and be informed about support sources. It is anticipated that the exchanges of knowledge occurring during this meeting, will help identify future research directions and new approaches and technologies that will eventually lead to a better understanding of these conditions and improved treatment and prevention strategies. It is expected that the Faculty will serve as role models for future generations of Pediatric Nephrologists and serve to stimulate interest in this field as a career choice. The Pediatric Nephrology Seminars have successfully addressed for over 44 years the issues of selecting the best faculty speakers, formal lectures of short duration followed by panel discussions and case-based presentations. Informal exchanges throughout the meeting allows for clear improvement in the professional gaps of the intended audience. The faculty, format and educational design will allow learners to give better patient care with regards to early detection of kidney disease in children or its complications (i.e growth hormone deficiency) and a more evidence based management of these conditions.

ACTIVITY LEARNING OBJECTIVESGoals for the Scientific Conference/Seminar.The purpose of the 45th Pediatric Nephrology Seminar and 5th Renal Pathology Course will be to review the current state/knowledge of selected relevant areas of research in Pediatric Nephrology with clinical practice implications. The specific aims of the proposed scientific Seminar are:

1. To review the current understanding of the diagnosis and management of various kidney disorders with a focus on clinical research, clinico-pathologic correlations, current approaches for the general practitioner in common kidney conditions, concepts on neonatal nephrology and hypertension, effects of nutrition, and recombinant growth hormone in chronic kidney disease, in-depth review on selected glomerulopathies, on-going challenges in critical care nephrology, chronic kidney disease, dialysis and transplantation, and new developments in genetic approaches to inherited disorders and precision medicine.

2. To identify the most critical and promising areas for future basic and clinical research efforts regarding Pediatric Nephrology.

3. To stimulate interest in Pediatric Nephrology as a career choice.

4. To provide role models for the next generation of Pediatric Nephrologists and a communication network for future collaboration and career support for retention of current trainees.

FACULTY DISCLOSURE AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST RESOLUTIONAll conflicts of interest of any individual(s) in a position to control the content of this CME activity will be identified and resolved prior to this educational activity being provided. Disclosure about provider and faculty relationships, or the lack thereof, will be provided to learners.

Pediatric Nephrology Seminar XLV and the Renal Pathology Course are an international forum for pediatric and adult nephrologists, pediatricians, internists, general practitioners, renal pathologists, neonatologists, pediatric urologists, transplant surgeons, nurses, nutritionists and allied health professionals to review selected relevant subjects and share new scientific materials.
