When LochenHeath Golf Club openedin 2001, it was greeted with great fanfareand reviews. The panoramic views ofGrand Traverse Bay, rolling terrain, exceptional length, and dramatic Scottish-style bunkering made LochenHeath theplayer's choice in Traverse City.

LochenHeath was designed within a600-acre cherry orchard right in the heartof America's Cherry Capital. The courserolls through the trees yet offers generouslanding areas. The sixth hole was placedon the water's edge of Grand TraverseBay and 16 of the 18 holes offer visualssettings of the bay.

In 2004, architect Steve Smyers wascalled back to replace two holes, offeringthe course strategic expansion. While onsite, he softened the green complexes, widened landing areas and added lengthto the championship tees. The changesmade LochenHeath more playable forevery caliber of golfer. This spring, course modifications will be made toincrease player enjoyment.

The practice facility is second to nonein Michigan with target greens andbunkers dotting the landing area. Thereare two large putting greens as well amassive green for sand trap practice andone for approach and chipping. Multi-directional tees, a practice fairwaybunker, and the entire practice area over-look the bay.

The pro shop and restaurant are perchedon the bluff with outstanding views of thebay, most notably from the large, full-serv-ice deck. Under the expert guidance of ChefJoseph George, LochenHeath offers excep-tional food for lunch and dinner along withbeverage cart service every day. If yourgroup wants a special meal, not found on themenu, our culinary staff will not disappointwhile providing the best service in NorthernMichigan.

In 2012, LochenHeath will be opening anEvent Pavilion to host conferences, ban-quets, and receptions. The pavilion featuresa walk out patio with stunning panoramicviews of Northern Michigan.

LochenHeath is more than a beautifulgolf course and a wonderful facility-the peo-ple who play and live at LochenHeath makeyou feel like you are part of the family.

Employees pride themselves on exempla-ry service and excellent course conditioning, just what you'd expect of General Manager,Mike Husby, a 38-year career professional.Mike puts his stamp of solid customer serv-ice on each aspect of the facility, whichmakes playing LochenHeath even more of aspecial day.

Now that LochenHeath is a public venue, you can experience the Husby touch first-hand.

From the President…Dear Fellow Golfers,

Yikes! How many days have we had 40plus degrees in January this year? I wasout on my motorcycle yesterday andwhile riding by Mt Holly there were peo-ple skiing, as well as people hitting ballsoutside. If I had been up early enough Icould have done all three that day. Gottalove it!

How about updates on changes for the2012 season. The Board has been busyplanning and several changes are on theway.

The on-line and snail mail registrationthis year will give players the option ofselecting how many of the ChampionshipSeries Events you would like to play. Thisis a big change from years past.

In the Championship Series Events, bonus Honor Roll points will be awarded

to the top 5 finishers in the ChampionshipDivision. This reward will be for thoseplayers that play all Championship SeriesEvents. The same opportunity also existsfor Net and Senior players, which canhelp them receive an invitation to theDeyak Invitational in September.

We sent out a survey about the StateMatch Play and received a very highresponse rate. We appreciate all yourcomments and suggestions. The two mainsuggestions that came from that surveywere to either hold the tournament upnorth (many locations suggested) or holdit locally in the Metro Detroit area. TheBoard eventually decided to break with along-standing tradition to move the tour-nament into the Metro Detroit area.

Based on the comments from everyone,we are expecting the State Match Playwill draw a lot of interest so get yourentry in early this year. Please note that

the entry cost is up slightly but pleaserealize that carts are now included witheach round. No additional expense forcarts. The Michigan Publinx Medal PlayChampionship will move over toPheasant Run Golf Course in Canton thisyear. The tournament will be carts only,so we put the cost of the carts into theentry fee, which reflects the $30 increasein entry fee. The entry fee will include all54 holes along with driving range facili-ties.

We have sent out two coupons recently, which we call “Pub Perks”. One was toMiles of Golf for a club fitting. If youhave not done that, you are missing agreat opportunity. Many of our membershave used the service over the years, andit has helped their games tremendously. The other coupon was to The Tennis and

Anatomy of a Publinxer

Society is changing and theeconomy is not what it oncewas. The man with the“swoosh” on his hat thatbrought crowds of people togolf may not be the same manhe was, in the competitivesense. One thing that has notchanged is the game of golf.Sure technology has tried toenhance the average player’sability, but the game has notchanged. It is still 18 holesand the lowest score is theoptimal result. But why arewe running away from thegame? High end golf coursesare still high end, but theremaining courses are improv-ing quickly due to better con-trolled budgets and very goodsuperintendents that are doingmore with less.

I personally went frombeing a team player at one ofthe highest end public golfcourses in the Orchards to ateam at a city course calledFox Creek. I thought immedi-ately there was going to be afall off in quality, but boy wasI wrong! Sure it is 6700 yardscompared to 7000+ yards atthe Orchards, but the greensare always in great shape andthe fairways are always wellmanicured. What more canthe average public player askfor? Why are we losing peo-

ple from this game and notcontinuously growing?

I have my theories on whythis may be happening and theeasy answer is money but Ibelieved the most prevalent isthe time commitment to playan average round. We haveturned the game we enjoyplaying from a structured 4hour activity to one that cantake from anywhere from 5 to6 hours. We are now a societythat has data streaming at usfrom multiple directions fromsmart cell phones to a highspeed internet availablealmost anywhere. With every-thing coming at us so fast whycan’t we play golf the sameway? I believe that peopledon’t want to sacrifice thetime anymore. Even in fourhours you can do an unlimitedamount of things elsewhere. This is where I feel we need totake stock in our daily lives,we need a break! Golf givesus that break, golf gives us arespite to enjoy fresh air, getsome exercise if we walk, andenjoy the company of friendswith a little competition tospark our interests if wechoose to.

Another theory I have is theinstant gratification that wehave become accustomed to. I

mentioned before how data isinstantly available at our fin-gertips, but I think we havealso become used to the easeof trying to “buy” a bettergame. Each year the equip-ment manufacturers unveil thenewest equipment that willhelp improve distance, reducespin, and straighten out drives. When will it ever get back tothe fact that we still need topractice to actually“improve”? I can see peoplegetting frustrated becausetheir purchases do not giveinstant gratification orimprovement. Instead of buy, buy, buy we should recommitto getting better through prac-tice, practice, practice. Againeasier said than done, but allthe more gratifying when youget better through effort. Howfun would it be to hit the ballfarther with a two-year olddriver then your friend thathas the latest technology? Theribbing can be endless andmake things more fun, golfprovides competition withincompetition, longest drives, greens in regulation, so on.You can challenge your net-work of friends on more thanjust score. In order to accom-plish these internal goals youstart by checking our egos atthe door and ask for help. Aska friend to take video of your

swing, consult your local PGApro, upload your swing to agolf improvement website, there are countless ways thatwe have to get better if wechoose to do so.

I ask the readership, how dowe fall back in love with thisgame? There are diehardplayers that won’t go away, which is great. How do weattract the people that are onthe fence? You the publichave answers and we want tohear them. I have written 5 ofthese articles and the topicshave gone all over the mapmostly my pursuit to get betterthrough whatever means nec-essary and I want to reach outagain to whoever may readthis to provide me yourthoughts, how do you get bet-ter, what you focus on, andhow do we get your non golf-ing friends engaged? I wouldenjoy reading those and takingthe best of them and addingthem to my game or relay thatout to the general public. Please feel free to submit yourstories, tips, article ideas [email protected]. Bestof luck in the new season!

Principal Changes To The Rules Of Golf

This book contains the Rules of Golf, which will be effectiveworldwide from January 1, 2012. It represents the culmination offour years work by the United States Golf Association (USGA)and R&A Rules Limited, following consultation with other golf-ing bodies throughout the world.

While it is considered important that the Rules be faithful to theirhistorical principles, they must be clear, comprehensive and rel-evant to today’s game, and the penalties must be appropriate. TheRules need regular review to ensure these goals are met. This setof Rules is the latest stage of this evolution.

Both the USGA and R&A Rules Limited wish to preserve theintegrity of golf at all levels and to stress the importance ofrespect for and adherence to the Rules.

We express our grateful thanks not only for the work done by ourrespective committees, but also to those other people whose var-ied contributions have made this revision possible.

Principal Changes Introduced in the 2012 CodeRules of Golf Definitions

ADDRESSING THE BALLThe Definition is amended so that a player has addressed the ballsimply by grounding his club immediately in front of or behindthe ball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance. Therefore, the Rules generally no longer provide for a playeraddressing the ball in a hazard. (See also related change to Rule18-2b)

RULESRule 1-2. Exerting Influence on Movement of Ball or AlteringPhysical ConditionsThe Rule is amended to establish more clearly that, if a playerintentionally takes an action to influence the movement of a ballor to alter physical conditions affecting the playing of a hole in away that is not permitted by the Rules, Rule 1-2 applies onlywhen the action is not already covered in another Rule. Forexample, a player improving the lie of his ball is in breach ofRule 13-2 and therefore that Rule would apply, whereas a playerintentionally improving the lie of a fellow-competitor’s ball isnot a situation covered by Rule 13-2 and, therefore, is governedby Rule 1-2.

Rule 6-3a. Time of StartingRule 6-3a is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from dis-qualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokesat the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reductioncould be introduced as a condition of competition.

Rule 12-1. Seeing Ball; Searching for BallRule 12-1 is reformatted for clarity. In addition, it is amended to(i) permit a player to search for his ball anywhere on the coursewhen it may be covered by sand and to clarify that there is nopenalty if the ball is moved in these circumstances, and (ii) applya penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a if a player moves hisball in a hazard when searching for it when it is believed to becovered by loose impediments.

Rule 13-4. Ball in Hazard; Prohibited ActionsException 2 to Rule 13-4 is amended to permit a player tosmooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including beforeplaying from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose ofcaring for the course and Rule 13-2 is not breached.

Rule 18-2b. Ball Moving After AddressA new Exception is added that exonerates the player from penal-ty if his ball moves after it has been addressed when it is knownor virtually certain that hedid not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of windthat moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penal-ty and the ball is played from its new position.

Rule 19-1. Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped; By OutsideAgencyThe note is expanded to prescribe the various outcomes when aball in motion has been deliberately deflected or stopped by anoutside agency.

Rule 20-7c. Playing from Wrong Place; Stroke PlayNote 3 is amended so that if a player is to be penalized for play-ing from a wrong place, in most cases the penalty will be limit-ed to two strokes, even if another Rule has been breached priorto his making the stroke.

APPENDIX IVA new Appendix is added to prescribe general regulations for thedesign of devices and other equipment, such as tees, gloves anddistance measuring devices.

Over the past few years, familiar names have held thePlayer of Year title. BillZylstra, Greg Davies, andJason May seemed to have amonopoly on the award goingback to 2005, especially GregDavies winning three in thattime frame. Last year thingschanged, a young, recent col-lege grad from EasternMichigan University put in aneffort to upset the trend butfaced stiff competition fromBill Zylstra. In the end, MartinJeppesen pulled away inpoints capturing MichiganPublinx 2011 Player of theYear.

Not only did Marty have agreat season personally, healso was part of a very suc-cessful team at Green Oakswho went all the way to theWest Side Team Play finalsbefore falling to Lyon Oaks ina tightly contested match.

In the spring of 2011, Martyhad just finished his fine colle-giate career and turned up his

in state play by repeating aschampion of the Horton Smithheld at Detroit Golf Club andadding his first GAM eventvictory by winning the GolfAssociation of MichiganChampionship held at BartonHills Country Club.

These two victories wereenough to keep Bill Zylstra atbay who had a fine season inhis own right, winning theMichigan Publinx Medal PlayChampionship and finishingas runner up to Scott Jaschukat the Michigan Publinx StateMatch Play.

In order to hold off the hardcharging Zylstra, Marty puttogether a strong season withan impressive body of work, his non-collegiate accom-plishments were:

• Winner at the HortonSmith Championship @Detroit Golf Club

• Top 10 at the MichiganPublinx Medal PlayChampionship @ FellowsCreek

• Qualified for US OpenSectionals

• Exempt to MichiganAmateur, qualified formatch play an won 1stmatch, losing to runner up

• Finished 5th at MichiganOpen with a final round 66at the Orchards Golf Club

• Qualified for USAmateur, made matchplay and lost in 1st round

• Winner at the GAMChampionship @ BartonHills Country Club

2011 was Marty’s first MIPublinx Player of the Yearaward. He was also in the run-ning for 2011 GAM Player ofthe Year award and was run-ning away with it until a late

push by Randy Lewis whowon the 2011 USGA MidAmateur Championship.

Marty has indicated he hasaspirations to turn profession-al, we at the Michigan Publinxwish him well and hope thatwe see our second former MIPublinx member make it toPGA Tour.

From the MI Publinx Boardof Directors and all of themembers of the MI Publinx,we want to say congratula-tions to Marty on winning thePlayer of the Year Title!

Good Luck Marty!

Teaching philosophy focuses on

positive communication and use

of drills to create an exciting

learning opportunity

Pictured above is the practice station thatI have set up for one of my students insidemy Academy training facility here atBoyne Highlands. I simply cut a swimnoodle in two small pieces to allow forher 7-iron to pass thru the “Gates” that Ihave secured to the hitting mat. She startsoff with shorter slow motion swings firstwithout a ball and then with a ball onceshe can swing pass the swim noodleswithout hitting them. This exercise willbegin to narrow the golfers focus andpresent the center of the clubface to thegolf ball more often. This works greatwith golfers of all abilities and will great-ly improve your ball striking during theoff-season. I have found that with indooroff-season training most golfers simplyswing with very little focus on what their

real issues are at hand. Every golfer outthere can improve ball contact and thiswill prove to help tremendously. Give thisa try and let me know how a solid golfshot feels!

PS…. Find an indoor training facility thatyou can really focus on fundamentals andsearch for off-season lesson packagesbecause now is the time to prepare for bet-ter golf this summer. Check us out atwww.boynegolfacademy.com. You canalso visit me at www.brianoneillgolf.com
