One of the earliest of the settlers to arrive at Sydney Cove, Macarthur was the first Merino breeder, and a tireless campaigner for the export of Australian wool to Britain in the early 19th century. Although others made a significant contribution to the history of Australian wool production, Macarthur’s
vision, and passionate support for the trade, has seen him enshrined as ‘The Father of the Merino Industry’.Issued to mark the centenary of Macarthur’s death, and to honour his crucial role in the Wool Industry, the 2d Red, 3d Blue and 9d Purple stamps were released

The First Four Fives!Comprising hundreds of early decimal banknotes, a massive recent hoard find gives us the opportunity to present the complete 1967-74 $5 Note Set – at way below current catalogue value! Representing an important slice of Australian currency history, this dramatic cache of paper banknotes was obviously put together during the late 60s and early 70s. The lower denominations were found in abundance, with a particularly large number of the first four Australian $5 issues. Although legislation had made provision for a $5 note, no such denomination was issued at the inception of decimal currency in 1966. It was in 1967 that the first $5 was released, during the short-lived 2-year Coombs/Randall signature combination. The second $5 issue
bore the signatures Phillips/Randall, with two types being issued under Phillips/Wheeler – the last ‘Commonwealth’ banner $5 in 1972, and first ‘Australia’ banner $5 in 1974. Highly sought after individually, and available as such on the Order Form, the first four Australian $5 notes form a natural set – especially when found in decent grade, as here. Stashed away at the time of issue, approximately 40 years ago, this historic 4-note set is in attractive Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition. Top value, the complete set in VF-EF is now A$145 below the VF catalogue price!
