Introduction   A means of getting access to any kind of information

developed from two complementary technologieswireless and fiber.

  High-speed multimedia

  Aim at combining bandwidth of

optical networks and ubiquity and mobility of

wireless access systems

F IBER  ACCESS T ECHNOLOGY

 Aim of fiber access technology

• Provides unprecedented bandwidth

potential

• Reducing complexity and power

consumption

• Improve quality of service

Disadvantages of fiber access technology

• susceptable to physical damage

• expensive

  WIRELESS ACCESS T ECHNOLOGY

 Aim of wireless access technology

•   low cost and low power consuming systems

• Provides wider range

• secure connectivity

Disadvantages of wireless access technology

•  limitations in bandwidth

• Affected by radiations

  SEAMLESS CONVERGENCE  OF  FIBER  AND

 WIRELESS ACCESS  TECHNOLOGIES

• New technology combining the assets of both

access technology and covering their short

comings

• Aims at providing more bandwidth and wider

range

Wireless access systems could not provide larger

carrying capacity and fiber access systems

architecture got more complex with increased

number of users , even the cost of construction and

power consumption increased.

Gave rise to need of a technology which could

provide the users with best of both worlds i.e. fiberbased wireless access system.

Improved quality of service (QoS)

Wideband services

Low transmission losses

Use of existing dark fibers

Existing hot-spots are typically supported by Wi-Fi access,a similar architecture is often useful to providecellular services

• This approach is often useful in crowded areassuch as supermarkets, airport concourses and

subway stations where the macro-cellulararchitecture is inadequate.

Majorly applied in fields where we requirespeed as well as large bandwidth  Broad Band Communication And

Access

FFTA

Telepresentations

Broadband Internet access

Implies instant access to a range of

services that require a combination of • high data rate

• low latency

• high reliability

Serves as a speedy means of access tointernet

Simplify base stations

complexity

E.g. Motorola canopy

F FTA(FIBER   TO  THE  ANTENNA)

Uses optical connection directly to the antenna

Provides flexibility for radio air interfaces

Reduced complexity of base station

Immunity to lightning strikes/electric discharges

TELEPRESENTATION

A presentation in which

the presenter and/or some of

the audience members are not

Physically present but telepresent

Used for training, product introductions, and general information meetings

Major forms: live net shows, videoteleconferencing, video telephony

Improved the quality of service (QoS) and

immunity to low line losses

Large Bandwidth

Economical and high speed system

Low Maintenance

Flexibility

Transparency

 HIGHLY IMMUNE TO NOISE

40db loss in optical to electrical and

electrical to optical conversion.

SIGNAL LOSSES

Due to impedance mismatch

EXPENSIVE

Fiber based wireless access systems supporthigh-speed multimedia in real-time bycombining the capacity of optical fiber with theflexibility of wireless networks

The integration of optical and wireless systemsis considered to be one of the most promisingsolutions for increasing the existing capacityand mobility as well as decreasing the costs in

next-generation optical access systems.
