Reece High School

From the Principal

Congratulations to all those students who received recognition for their achievement in a number of fields at the recent Grade 10 Leavers Assembly and the final assembly - as I often say “nothing is for nothing” in this life. There are many students who will not necessarily be recognised publicly for their achievement but we know that they have worked very hard to improve their literacy both in class and with additional support, or made great progress in numeracy or just learned to get along better with other students. We all know that happy healthy students is important but it is just as important that you can read, write and comprehend what is happening in the world around us and know how to connect to other people in the community. We all need to belong, we all need to be part of something and we all need to learn how the bits fit together. The Prefect Board for 2010 and the Head Prefects are :

Mieke Lizotte and Ben Ollington They have already completed their Mindmatters Youth Empowerment training and I am sure they will do a great job. The Prefect Induction ceremony will take place early in 2010. I would like to publically acknowledge the work of the School Association. This year they have worked with the staff and students to redevelop some very key policies in particular the Schools Value Statement which outlines how we will all behave and relate to each other within the school community.

Families who need to purchase new school uniforms for their students will notice some changes and although it probably sounds simple to select new items of uniform it is quite complex. We have to have value for money, good quality and a reliable supplier. Casey Frimley and Bernadette Hodgetts worked with the School Association surveying students and scouring the market until they found what we believe is an excellent product. The School Association is hard at work organising the catering for the Breathe of Life Concert. All funds from this go back into Reece High School and a proportion of the funds from the sale of concert tickets also goes back to the school. We need you to get behind this - further details are available in the newsletter. The School Association have also been heavily involved in the ground redevelopment and the building projects. The School Association needs your support and we will be seeking nominations from interested community members early in 2010. The AGM will be held on 18 March 2010 (tbc). I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Karen Smith who has completed her turn as chair and will not be standing for re-election. Karen has been an excellent ambassador for our school and has always publically demonstrated her pride and belief in Reece High School, the opportunities we provide and the achievements of our students This year has been a mixed year for our staff. We have farewelled Mrs Bernadette Hodgetts who was part of our team for 15 years. We have had a number of staff with ongoing health or family issues which we hope are resolved in the near future. We have welcomed ‘Archie Johnston’ into the Reece family and the family will also be expanded in early February with the birth of Nicki and Richard Heathcotes’ child. We have also offered our condolences to Gavin and Tina Smith whose daughter Mia was stillborn. Tina will be returning in 2010. At this stage we are farewelling Corinne O’Halloran, Ben Freshney and Anna McKenzie, we thank them for the contribution they have made to our team. Mr. Peter Bird is going on long service leave from the beginning of the school year until Easter. I wish all a happy and safe festive season and look forward to working with the community in 2010.

DAY FOR DANIEL: On Friday the 30th October, 290 red cupcakes were made and sold. The cupcakes were iced with red icing to represent Day for Daniels theme colour. In total we raised $127.00 which has been sent to the Day for Daniel Foundation. We hope the money raised helps the foundation with their programs, which raises awareness for younger children and teenagers about safety in public. A big thanks goes out to Mrs Trimper and her grade 8 and 10 classes, without them the day wouldn’t have run successfully. And thankyou to all the people who purchased the cupcakes, we hope you enjoyed them. From the Prefect Board.

SNAP: Recently Aiden Morse of 9B crowned a stellar year in Visual Art and Graphic design by winning the annual Launceston Church Grammar School 2009 photographic competition. Known as “Snap”, the competition is run statewide and is open to students from grades 9- 12. This year students were required to interpret 20 subjects and collect images of these in a photographic scavenger hunt. It is admirable for a grade 9 student to ably compete with college age students, but to win, particularly in a statewide competition, is quite an achievement. Aiden should be congratulated and well satisfied with his effort not only in this competition but throughout the year in both subjects.
