SS education today diff from decades ago that focused on rote memorization, where History was often taught as one damn fact after another. We look to foster perspective where students can be both parachutists and truffle hunters. Learning will not remain in a vacuum, but connect a larger narrative, harnessing the power of multiple disciplines, breaking the cycle from going to SS, ELA, Sci, by exploring the natural and powerful connection that exist between disciplines, building a framework for all learning. Our students will have meaningful and authentic experiences allowing them to apply their learning to the real world, and get involved via taking informed Action

Presentation Notes
While 3 years of math are what is required for a HS diploma in NYS, most of our students will have fulfilled this requirement by the end of their sophomore year. I am happy to report that most of our students take math courses for all 4 years in HS. Assuming your child is successful in grade 8 Algebra, they will receive one HS math course credit as well as one of the 3 Regents credits required for the Advanced Regents Diploma.

In 9th grade, your child will take Geometry or Applied Geometry. Geometry is a course where students will study Geometric reasoning. Students will learn how to write formal proofs, paragraph proofs and coordinate geometry proofs. Topics such as constructions, congruence, similarity, right triangles, and trigonometry will also be explored. Students will be prepared to take the Geometry Regents in June. Applied Geometry is another option for students who pass algebra and the regents exam with a score of 65-70. This is an introductory course that reinforces algebra skills while introducing concepts in Geometry. Students are prepared to continue their study of Regents Geometry with a deep understanding of the fundamental concepts, which are essential for success in the study of advanced mathematics. The graphing calculator is used throughout the course to integrate numerical, algebraic, graphical, and analytical understanding. Students will take a Final exam in this course and are placed into the Geometry Regents course in 10th grade, taking the Geometry Regents exam at the end of their sophomore year. There are many clubs that the Math Department offers for students at the HS. Mathletes, MARS Club, Game Design Programming Club, and Robotics. Encourage your child to get involved in a club.
