Horsemen’s Council of Illinois Names Ron Rhoades to Board

Ronald J. Rhoades, Seymour, IL has been appointed to theHorsemen’s Council of Illinois (HCI) Board of Directors, according toFrank Bowman, HCI president.

Rhoades also is active with Illinois Trail Riders and the StayinAlive chapter of Old People’s Riding Club. He and his wife, Sara, bothactive trail riders, own and operate White Horse Farm, firsthomesteaded by Sara’s grandparents in the early 1900s. The farm is10 minutes west of Champaign-Urbana along the Sangamon Rivermoraine.

Born and raised in central Illinois, Rhoades earned a bachelor’sdegree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He wasintroduced to horses and began riding when he met Sara. Today theylive on a portion of Sara’s original family farm, operating a smallboarding stable and managing rental properties.

“We enjoy trail riding on our Quarter Horses - Blue and Scooter,”Rhoades said. “We became interested in HCI and Illinois Trail Riderswhile searching for avenues to help protect our ridingareas as we kept seeing our local riding areas disappear.”

“Trail access and the protection and enhancement of riding areasstatewide is a solid plank in the HCI platform,” Bowman said, “and weare pleased to have Ron’s experience to help guide ourefforts.”

What Makes a Really Great Equine Fair?By Acie G. Johnson, President, CEO, Orthoflex Saddleworks Inc.

One of the great joys in life, for horse lovers, is to attend one or more equine fairs in this great country. The equine enthusiast has the opportunity to:· Visit with and learn from some of the country’s top professional trainers and entertainers.· Broaden their horizons about equine care, form top veterinarians· Be entertained by horse-related showmen and show women.· Participate in Competitions or Challenges and do a “show & tell” of their skills.· See and learn about exotic and varied breeds of horses.· Shop till they drop for equine related items, not always seen locally.

There are many reasons why an equine fair is successful and luck is not one of them. Fairs are successdriven by adequate attendance to be financially successful. Their survival is determined much like that ofa retail store- having the right product, at the right time, the right price, the right location, and offeringwhat the consumer wants. That starts with a staff or volunteers, with the right mindset, to serve thecustomer in a friendly and informed manner.

Often, we see show management who are more interested in the financial gains then the desire to offer thevery best event, for the consumer. It has been my experience, having owned more than thirty businesses,if you make or offer product or service designed with the customer in mind, you will be more apt to finishfirst, and be financially successful. My advice to fair management is to offer the very best or move on,because your days are limited.

A show promoter who fails to do adequate promotion to potential attendees is doomed to fail. It takes alot of money to get started. A promoter must spend the money and then expect the results. All showproducers become entrepreneurs, whether an individual or organizations. It is a gamble to start orcontinue an equine fair, each and every year.

Attendees shouldn’t expect royalty treatment for a bargain priced ticket. As an attendee consumer, youmust be fair to the producer of the event. After all, the producer has invested a great deal of time, effort, and money creating the event for you. They must find volunteers who work for free because they love thehorse, sponsors who recognize the importance of the event to their livelihood, vendors who offer a variety, and customers who appreciate the efforts. Let them know your appreciation, by continued support of theevent. At the end of the day, producers get more satisfaction from your thanks than from any possiblefinancial rewards.

Every person has people they look up to in their personal life and in their equine related life. A good fairpresenters. Professional equine trainers are in abundance and, in my

estimation, over 3,000 trainers are trying to get into an equine fair, in any single year. Only a few make it.Some are not so good, some are good, and some are simply great. My hat goes off to those who respondin a courteous manner to the most antagonistic or uninformed consumer. A professional equine trainerwhom has confidence is great, whereas a professional trainer who is confidently arrogant has a short-lived career. All professional equine trainers started because of the love of the horse, not the love ofmoney. That is quite evident in top trainers. If they love the horse and hone their skills, they will see themoney. Our company associates with trainers who meet our criteria of knowledge, honesty, integrity, and . We understand if we promote the person and not our product, we will reap thebenefits. So, when you see an Orthoflex logo associated with a trainer, you know we have done ourhomework about them.

A great equine fair will have a mix of beginning trainers, intermediate trainers, and top trainers and cover

Page 11: Midwest Equine Online

most equine disciplines. Thanks to forward thinking fairs, which have given the not-so-well knowntrainers a chance, some great equine trainers have emerged to become very popular and successful. Theforward thinking fair staff is kind of like American Idol, which has brought us many top entertainers, from complete obscurity. Most professional trainers make less money at the fairs than in their daily work, for two reasons (1) most fairs can’t afford to pay huge fees, and (2) the top trainers understand theimportance of personal contact with, and feedback from, the consumer to further their career. Fans soonforget a picture image but remember a handshake, for a lifetime!

In our opinion, one of the very best equine fairs is Midwest Horse Fair , in Madison, Wisconsin. What a truly great staff! They are forward thinking and friendly and helpful to all. A diverse Board ofDirectors, which allows the staff to do their work, means they always deliver the best presenters, whetherknown or not so well known. They listen and have jump-started many careers. They recognize theimportance of getting the next year organized and exposed very early and do much of the work before thisyear’s eventtakes place. In a word, they are well organized.

Other good fairs, with it all, are Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo (Indiana), Equifest of Kansas/EquinePromotions Inc. (Kansas), Horse World Expo (Maryland and Pennsylvania), Western States Horse Expo(California), and Equine Affaire (Ohio, Massachusetts, & California). Many other equine events alsomake a horse lover’s life worth living. Visit one soon!

So, when you judge an equine fair, look for event organization, diverse presenters, friendly and informedstaff, forward thinking planners with event announcements many months ahead of the actual event, and aplace where you can shop until you drop! Top presenters plan and book events at least a year, in advance.
