Every second year it’s all eyes on lighting at Salone del Mobile. It’s an exciting time to visit Milan especially when the back lanes and industrial zones of the city become the canvas for some amazing installations and this year, the International Year of Light, was no exception.

There was also plenty to get excited about in furniture. Standout shows and designers were both newcomers and familiar faces and made for a week filled with inspiration. For many brands, the focus was on product extensions, exploring new materials, colours and finishes, plus influences from the past including Memphis with all its bright colours and quirky forms.

The big news at Moooi was the carpet collection featuring bold and photorealistic prints. B&B Italia introduced a lighter and more adaptable member of the Papilio family, the Papilio Shell, the Charlotte chair by Antonio Citterio featuring a lightweight aluminium frame covered with raw-edged leather, plus two strong outdoor collections by Patricia Urquiola - Butterfly and Fat.

Kartell launched a collection of bright vases and a stool by the late Ettore Sottsass setting the Memphis tone, while Carl Hansen & Søn shared the values of craftsmanship and released timeless novelties celebrating Hans J. Wegner, Ole Wanscher and Frits Henningsen.

A standout in the lighting pavilion was Flos with a thoughtful presentation conceived by Ron Gilad. Taking simplicity to perfection was the Superloon by Jasper Morrison who also collaborated with Emeco on the Alfi seating range made entirely out of recycled materials.

THE ART OF LIGHT

BY DAVID HARRISON

When light and design connect in just the right way it can be pure magic. At the Milan Furniture Fair this year, David Harrison took a look at some lighting designers who consistently redefine the genre.

Light is one of those things most of us take for granted - reaching for a light switch is so automatic that we have lost sight of its true magic. Artists, photographers and some designers see light differently, searching for it in unusual places and within interesting materials.

In Milan, Daniel Rybakken, Studio Drift and Ingo Maurer all showed at venues across the city. While each studio works very differently, they all pursue projects of varying scales, from small domestic fittings, to installations for galleries and special events.

Studio Drift is the Dutch design studio of Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta. Their work involves large-scale installations that respond to the duo’s fascination with nature and technology. What started out as an experiment on attaching the hairs of a dandelion to a battery-powered LED, has expanded into acclaimed site-specific lighting projects around the world.

Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken has a preoccupation with conceptual lighting and a unique approach to architectural lighting. His latest design ‘Stochastic’, is a cascading chandelier of silvered glass spheres. A magical mix of mirror, light and sculptural form shows Rybakken’s preference for manipulating light rather than object creation.

An early pioneer of alternative lighting design, Ingo Maurer first came to fame in the mid-1960s and continues to explore witty lighting solutions using unexpected materials and everyday objects. In the past these have included everything from Campari bottles – ‘Campari Light’ – to smashed porcelain – ‘Porca Miseria!’. With technology moving on at break-neck speed, it is freethinking designers with a love of exploring new techniques

like Maurer, who are capable of creating new typologies.

In the hands of talented designers lighting does reach the level of an art form and the effect of light and its relationship to the human psyche can be explored in much the same way that artists have for centuries. As much as a well resolved furniture piece is worthy of admiration, nothing comes close to a light that touches you emotionally.
