The difference you’ll make The funds you raise on the Miles for Miracles: Japan Trek 2019 will go towards further research into sulphate therapy. This therapy has been shown to reduce the risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, such as cerebral palsy, in pre-term infants. Mater has already undertaken a pilot study of 100 mothers and babies led by Associate Professor Paul Dawson and Dr Elizabeth Hurrion at Mater Research. The study found that premature babies rapidly become deficient in nutrient sulphate, which is important for brain development. However, this deficiency could be prevented in most infants if those babies vulnerable to sulphate deficiency can be identified and administered a protective dose of sulphate after birth. To further this research, Mater is collaborating with other Queensland hospitals to recruit another 1,500 babies over the next five years. These babies will be followed up after two years, helping researchers to determine if blood levels of nutrient sulphate at one week after birth correlate to infant development. The difference you’ll makeThe funds you raise on the Miles for Miracles: Japan Trek 2019 will go towards further research into sulphate therapy.

Mater is the first hospital in the world to have conducted this validated sulphate testing.

About Mater FoundationAt Mater Foundation, we believe every man, woman and child deserves exceptional care.

Funds raised by Mater Foundation are distributed to support a range of clinical programs, education and training; medical research; vital equipment and Mission activities at Mater. We support compassionate healthcare for the community by promoting and funding the prevention and control of disease.

By partnering with Mater Foundation, you’re supporting an iconic and much-loved Queensland institution—the birthplace of one-in-six Queenslanders, the healthcare provider for more than 500,000 patients each year, and an internationally-recognised research institute.

Elke and Russ’ Mater little miracle, EssieElke and Russ were over the moon to welcome their second daughter Evelyn (Essie) into the world in 2013, but their journey to meet their daughter was fraught with ups and downs.

At 28 weeks, Elke had developed an infection. An emergency caesarean took place immediately and Essie was born, weighing just over one kilogram.

Despite all the wonderful advances of the past few decades, children who survive pre-term birth remain at high risk of serious disability. Babies like Essie, born 12 weeks premature, have 40 times the risk of developing cerebral palsy—an incurable condition which often results in life-long physical and mental impairment.

But there is hope thanks to Mater researchers Dr Paul Dawson and Dr Elizabeth Hurrion who are running a study—the first of its kind in the world—to correlate nutrient sulphate levels with developmental outcomes in pre-term infants to help the one in 16 pre-term babies who face impairment.

During her pregnancy, Elke and Essie were among 100 mothers and babies who participated in Dr Dawson and Dr Hurrion’s study, and while Essie has recently been diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy, she is a “chatty, happy and incredibly active little girl who loves spending time with her big sister Maya jumping on the trampoline and enjoys the beach”, says Elke.

Without amazing supporters like you, and brave volunteers like Elke and Essie, the research study would never have been possible. But this ground-breaking research has only just started.

It is only through the continuation of research that doctors can improve the odds for babies born prematurely.

Join us to trek Japan and your generous support will allow Mater to continue giving the best possible start to life for all babies, like Essie, born and cared for at Mater.
