SAFRAN IS AN INTERNATIONAL HIGH-TECHNOLOGY GROUP, operating in the aircraft propulsion and equipment, space and defense markets. M88TM PROVEN PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY

The M88TM develops 16,500 pounds of thrust with afterburner, and harbors growth potential of 20%. It is ideally suited to both low-altitude penetration and high-altitude interception missions, thanks to its exceptionally carefree handling.

Today’s armed forces demand maximum force projection capability, coupled with a minimal logistics footprint. Both dispatch reliability and maintainability were built into the M88TM from the outset.

The M88TM’s fully modular design facilitates all maintenance operations. It is also perfectly integrated in the Rafale’s airframe, which means that it can be removed and reinstalled in less than an hour by two crew members. The Rafale is also the only combat aircraft in the world that can return to flight status after its engines have been removed for on-site servicing, without having to undergo a new bench test.

Based on the development program defined by Dassault Aviation and French defense procurement agency DGA, Safran Aircraft Engines has started development work on the M88 to offer the best technological solutions for the Rafale Standard 4 by about 2023. Standard 4 incorporates feedback from Rafale operations, and is the first aircraft upgrade to include an engine upgrade.

Combat and training aircraft

Safran Aircraft Engines offers a range of engines for combat and training aircraft, adapted to the many different missions assigned to today’s armed forces. As the legacy propulsion partner of Dassault Aviation, we developed and produce the M53TM and M88TM engines for the Mirage 2000 and Rafale families of multirole fighters, respectively. Combat-proven and offering exceptionally carefree handling, these engines provide today’s armed forces with world-class performance, dispatch reliability and maintainability.

M53TM THE PILOTS' CHOICE

Developing 20,900 lb of thrust with afterburner, the M53-P2 combines performance and reliability to ensure excellent handling and an extended flight envelope, all the way from very low speeds to Mach 2.2. Selected by eight air forces on four continents, this engine is highly appreciated by pilots for its carefree handling, the result of a

full authority digital engine control (FADEC), which automatically regulates engine speed and maintains the airspeed chosen by the pilot. The M53-P2 also incorporates cutting-edge technologies to reduce the number of engine removals and maintenance costs in general.

LARZAC®, THE BENCHMARK IN TRAINING JET ENGINES

The Larzac® engine has passed the mark of 4 million flight-hours. In service for more than 45 years, it powers the Alpha Jet trainer, de-ployed by ten air forces worldwide.

The Larzac® develops about 3,200 lb of thrust and features a fully redundant FADEC control unit. It is the bench-mark in its thrust class, ideally suited to either training or tactical support missions, powering single- or twin-en-gine aircraft. Furthermore, the Larzac® features a modular design, for easier maintenance and extended service life.

THE MOST POWERFUL TURBOPROP IN THE WEST

The new-generation A400M military transport entered service in 2013. It was designed to meet the multiple requirements of armed forces for their key missions, including strategic and tactical transport and in-flight refueling.

The aircraft’s engine, the TP400TM, was developed and is produced and sold by Europrop International GmbH (EPI), a European consortium formed by Safran Aircraft Engines, MTU Aero Engines, Rolls-Royce and ITP Aero. Combining the respective areas of expertise of these four leading European engine-makers, the TP400TM is the most powerful turboprop currently in production in the West.

Rated at 11,600 shaft horsepower (SHP), the TP400TM is a key to the A400M’s performance. The four-engine airplane has a range of 4,800 nautical miles (8,900 km), allowing it to make long-distance round-trip flights from its main base. It is also the first military engine to receive civil aviation certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Since the first A400M entered service with the French air force in 2013, the TP400TM has logged over 200,000 hours in flight. The A400M is now deployed worldwide by six countries: Germany, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Turkey and Malaysia.

CFM56®: PROVEN RELIABILITY FOR ARMED FORCES

The best-selling CFM56®, known for its unexcelled reliability and low specific fuel consumption, has powered military aircraft since the 1980s. The military version of this engine, 95% identical to commercial versions, has been selected by some of the world's leading armed forces, namely the U.S. Air Force, the U.K. Royal Air Force and the French air force. More than 2,200 CFM56 engines are now in service with armed forces. Different versions of the CFM56®, capitalizing on Safran

Aircraft Engines’ technological excellence via CFM International* and the engine's civil aviation certification, are suited for a wide variety of military missions: in-flight refueling, surveillance, maritime patrol and passenger transport. The first model in the family, the CFM56-2, powers more than 500 aircraft, from KC-135 tankers to AWACS airborne warning and control system aircraft. The main operator is the U.S. Air Force, which is also the largest CFM customer to date, with more

than 1,850 engines in service. The CFM56-3 and CFM56-7 power several military aircraft types, including the Boeing 737 AEW&C airborne early warning and control, C-40 transport, and P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, a new-generation model offering enhanced resistance to corrosion and seawater, capable of carrying weapons under its wings.

The Tyne turboprop: a 50+ year career and still a bright future

The Tyne turboprop engine, rated at 6,100 SHP, was produced by an international consortium including Safran Aircraft Engines. Since 1964 it has powered the Transall C-160 transport and the Breguet Atlantic and Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft. It is still in service with the Transall deployed by the French and Italian armed forces and has logged over 8 million flight-hours to date. . To these days, this engine loggs 60 000 hours per year. To extend the life of these engines, we offer "by the hour" support contracts, backed by the engineering and production capabilities needed to ensure long-term support via part and module repairs.

For missions ranging from surveillance and high-altitude interception, to ground attack and training, the M53TM and M88TM engines have largely demonstrated their extensive operational capabilities in service. The M53TM, which entered service in 1987, has logged over 2.1 million flight-hours as powerplant of the Mirage 2000, already deployed by different air forces in a number of conflicts worldwide.

Since entering service on the Rafale in 2004, the M88 has logged nearly 700,000 hours in flight. This engine has largely proven its versatility and reliability during missions by the French air force in various conflict zones. Its world-class performance convinced several countries to choose the Rafale starting in 2015, with Egypt ordering 24, and India and Qatar 36 each.

With more than 4,500 military engines in service worldwide, Safran Aircraft Engines offers support contracts that maximize fleet dispatch reliability, while reducing maintenance costs. Our services range from flight-line support and spare parts supply, to maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), through-life support and even fleet management. Our comprehensive yet flexible services are tailored to each customer’s maintenance requirements, and span the full lifecycle of their engines.

ANTICIPATING CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS

Dispatch reliability is an imperative. To meet our customers’ expectations, we call on dedicated front office teams, in close contact with operations, plus proven technical skills, allowing us to plan ahead for the replacement of parts and modules. We also know how to optimize engine maintenance so that your planes stay in the air. We deploy a complete forecasting, scheduling, procurement and distribution system, calling on both our own and outsourced resources.

In addition we have signed agreements with both government and private partners to ensure that all our customers receive world-class local MRO support. All operational feedback is naturally analyzed to enhance our MRO services for lower costs and higher dispatch reliability, for example by expanding damage acceptability criteria, developing new repair solutions, and extending life limits for parts and modules.

Innovation in MRO

Today, we are counting on digital technology to continuously improve our technical and financial performance. The key is a huge increase in data, allowing us to carry out advanced data analytics, make increasing use of e-documents, implement better diagnostics aids and fleet monitoring, and use virtual reality to guide our maintenance technicians. At the same time, we are looking very carefully at the additive manufacturing process for our support services, which would allow us to efficiently make parts in small quantities and/or repair damaged subassemblies.

OUR TOP PRIORITY: KEEPING YOU IN THE AIR!

 FCAS: A KEY TO EUROPEAN SOVEREIGNTY

In July 2017, France and Germany launched the development of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a cornerstone in the construction of European defense and its associated industrial base. The FCAS will be based on a new multirole combat aircraft designed to counter upcoming threats, to be deployed as part of a complete combat network including drones of different types. This Next Generation Fighter (NFG) will enter service towards 2040, succeeding the current-generation Rafale and the Eurofighter.

“Best Athlete”

Safran Aircraft Engines and MTU Aero Engines finalized an industrial partnership in February 2019 to jointly develop, produce and support the new fighter’s engine. The partnership is based on the “best athlete” principle, drawing on each partner’s specific and areas of expertise,

which are largely complementary. Safran Aircraft Engines will take full charge of engine design and integration, with responsibility for the combustor, high-pressure turbine and afterburner, while MTU will be the leader on services, and will take charge of the low and high-pressure compressors and the low-pressure turbine.

Safran Aircraft Engines deploys extensive research, technology and development resources to anchor our position as a leading manufacturer of military aircraft engines and ensure our customers’ strategic independence. Our ongoing focus on innovation is designed to deliver military aircraft engines that combine top performance and reliability with reduced cost of ownership.

  DEVELOPING TOMORROW’S TECHNOLOGIES

One of our major areas of research is materials. In particular, new metallic alloys and ceramic matrix composites allow us to reduce weight while increasing strength and thermal resistance. They also allow us to increase the operating temperature in the high-pressure turbine, one of the keys to engine performance.

Another main focus of innovation is the engine control system. It has to be capable of controlling all operating parameters, despite the demanding vibratory and thermal environment, while also generating data that will help armed forces reduce operating costs. Looking further ahead, we will be implementing new architectures based on a perfect understanding of materials,

coupled with operational feedback and fast-paced progress in hardware and software, to help extend the service life of critical engine parts.

Safran Aircraft Engines is also investing in digital! Big data and other advanced analytics open new possibilities for reducing cost of ownership and implementing predictive maintenance. In addition, with additive manufacturing, we will be able to make even complex parts, lighter and faster than ever.

Safran Tech, the Group’s Research & Technology center, was founded to develop the outstanding technologies that will underpin Safran’s future products and services, and deliver added value to our customers. Located in Paris-Saclay, one of the leading research clusters in Europe, Safran Tech hosts nearly 300 world-class experts in key fields, including propulsion, energy, materials, modeling and simulation. It also houses two research platforms, Safran Additive Manufacturing and Safran Analytics (big data and digital solutions).

AN OPTIMIZED INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION

Safran Aircraft Engines has set up a robust industrial organization and supply chain to make sure that our customers always receive products to the highest standards of quality and reliability.

Most of our engine parts are made in-house, at Paris-area facilities in Gennevilliers, Evry-Corbeil and Villaroche – the backbone of our production organization, covering forging, casting, machining, final assembly and testing.

With the first Rafale export contracts, we have to significantly increase M88TM engine production rates. We have therefore made substantial investments to develop and improve our production capabilities, in particular on the assembly line at Villaroche. Thanks to these new infrastructures, we have reduced assembly cycles by 35% and increased the production rate 2.5 times in four years.

UNRIVALED REPAIR CAPABILITIES

Safran Aircraft Engines has invested in state-of-the-art industrial facilities to meet armed forces’ growing requirement for support services, especially at Châtellerault. This plant provides maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services on complete engines, modules and components, including the M88TM (Rafale), M53TM (Mirage 2000), Tyne (Transall and Atlantique 2), Larzac® (Alpha Jet) and TP400TM

(A400M). We also count on a broad network of suppliers and partners to ensure the quick servicing of all our engines.

Production power to benefit armed forces

STATE-OF-THE-ART PRODUCTION FACILITIES

Safran Aircraft Engines is one of the few engine-makers worldwide to understand and apply all advanced techniques used in casting (equiaxial structures, directional or single-crystal solidification) and forging (die stamping, circular rolling, thermomechanical treatment, isothermal forging). Also part of our technology portfolio are multi-channel cooling and ceramic coatings,

indispensable to ensure that turbine blades stand up to blazing heat. Safran Aircraft Engines deploys hundreds of large machine tools, mostly numerical control (NC) models, to offer advanced technologies such as inertial friction welding, electrochemical milling, laser cutting, drilling and welding, plasma projection, high-speed machining and additive manufacturing.
