welcome to Millennium Park

Millennium Park has garnered attention all over the world as one of Chicago’s

greatest jewels. From the impressive Frank Gehry designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion to

the artistic wonders that include Cloud Gate, aectionately known as “the Bean,”

the Park is a year round attraction. But never more so than in the summer, when

free musical entertainment, family-friendly activities and tours oer non-stop

enjoyment.

This summer a new exhibit lls the Boeing Galleries, featuring monumental ceramic

sculptures by artist Jun Kaneko. A new summer lm series will screen at the Pritzker

Pavilion, and opening nights of both the Chicago Blues Festival and Chicago Gospel

Music Festival will take place there. Additionally, for the rst time ever, the Chicago

Jazz Festival will be held in Millennium Park, featuring four stages of music.

Returning this summer are the city’s free concert series in the Park: Downtown

Sound, Loops and Variations and Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Visitors and

residents will continue to enjoy a great summer tradition, the Grant Park MusicFestival, and kids of all ages can have fun all summer long at the Family Fun Festival.

On behalf of the City of Chicago, I encourage you to plan a visit to Millennium Park

this summer. You won’t want to miss it.

Lee Ranaldo Band + Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog • MAY 27While he’s best known for being a co-founder and three-decades-long memberof Sonic Youth, it’s Lee Ranaldo’s guitar skills, ranked No. 1 by Spin Magazine,that will highlight his performance on the Jay Pritzker Pavilion stage. Joining himare Sonic Youth band mate Steve Shelley, Alan Licht and Tim Luntzel. Last year,Ranaldo released his rst fully self-penned album demonstrating both his electricand acoustic skills. Sharon Van Etten + Speck Mountain • JUNE 3In just a few short years and only thr ee albums, New Jersey born and raised singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten has established her vision and voice. The Chicago-based, psychedelicrock band Speck Mountain opens the show.

While the singer-songwriter and guitarist realized great notoriety around hisOscar® winning Best Song ”Once”, he was part of one of the most inuential bands inIreland, The Frames, members of which are with him at this performance. Joining them

is Irish singer and musician Lisa Hannigan.

Daniel Lanois + Brokeback • JUNE 17A celebrated producer for artists such as Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Peter Gabriel andU2’s The Joshua Tree, Daniel Lanois also has a large catalog of his o wn albums, rstrecording in 1989. The songwriter and musician now has nine albums, two soundtracks,plus a three-part box set as a solo artists, recordings reecting his distinct sound of pedalsteel. Chicago and Thrill Jockey recording artists Brokeback are the opening act.

The group has been touring the worldopening for such acts as Wilco and The Black Keys. Kicking o the evening is young, up andcoming Chicago R&B/Gospel singer, Theo Hu and The Platinum Band.

Dawes + The Cairo Gang • JULY 8

North Carolina is fruitful ground for Los Angeles-based Dawes as the band just recorded itsthird album there, the recently released Stories Don’t End. It features songs created by vocalistand lead guitarist Taylor Goldsmith reaching a balance between tough and tender, especiallywhen melded with Tay Strathairn’s piano. Dawes features Wylie Gelber on bass and Taylor’sbrother Grin on drums. Chicago Rock ‘n Roll band, The Cairo Gang, opens the show.

Fatoumata Diawara + Alasdair Roberts and Friends • JU LY 15Fatoumata Diawara’s debut album, Fatou, is almost entirely her own work: self-composedand arranged, with her own backing vocals and percussion. The artist, raised in Malibut now based in Paris, creates her own sound with a distinctly African spin. Inspired byWassoulou tradition, jazz and blues, Diawara has overcome cultural prejudice faced bywomen to make her own music that is well-received by giants in the industry. Opening thestage this evening is Irish Folk group and Drag City Recording artists Alasdair Roberts andFriends.

The Handsome Family + AZITA • JU LY 22The Handsome Family is actually the husband and wife songwriting team of Brett andRennie Sparks who have been collaborating for 20 years. Their latest release is TheHandsome Family’s Wilderness which intertwines the wonders of nature with unusualmoments in history. Their music invokes Appalachian holler, psychedelicrock, Tin Pan Alley and medieval ballads. Chicago’s piano songstress andmulti-instrumentalist AZITA opens for the band.

Dessa + Psalm One • JU LY 29Dessa is still a rapper and poet, but her new album, Parts ofSpeech, scheduled for a late June release, reveals an elegantsinger with a multi-platform vo ice. The recording involvesmultiple narratives of love, loss, connections and communion.Hearing it performed live will be a real treat. Chicago’s ownunderground hip-hop artist Psalm One opens the show.

which are comprised of stomping techno, eerie synth jams, musique concrete, Latin

rhythms and Ethiopian music. The group will be presenting material from their new

album, The Marriage of True Minds. Fonema Consort, a contemporary vocal and

instrumental chamber ensemble that explores the classical vocal music of our

times, opens.

ICE + Nosaj Thing • JULY 4, 6:30PMThe International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) brings the music of the 20th century’s

most enigmatic composer—Edgard Varèse—to the Pritzker Pavilion for this unique

concert event. Varèse’s Poème électronique, a piece for electronics alone, will ll

the Pavilion with the sounds of bells, choruses and the distinctive noises of the early

electrical age. One of LA’s nest musical modulators, Nosaj Thing, opens.

Dan Deacon + Friends of the Gamelan •JULY 11, 8PMDan Deacon is an electronic musician and composer based in

Baltimore, Maryland. His live show is widely known for its use of the

audience as active participants in the performance, breaking down the

barriers between audience and musician. Opening for Deacon are Friends

of the Gamelan who will perform their set in a unique musical scale that

features a seven-tone unequal division of the octave.

Ólafur Arnalds + Sarah Neufeld • JULY 18, 6:30PMBorn in suburban Iceland, composer/performer Ólafur Arnalds has always enjoyed pushing

boundaries with both his studio work and live shows. Since the release of his debut

album, he has built a dedicated international following and established his genre-crossing

compositions blending classical, pop and ambient/electronica inuences to a unique

musical language. Canadian and member of Arcade Fire, Sarah Neufeld, opens.

eighth blackbird with Glenn Kotche + Lesley Flanigan •WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 6:30PMWilco drummer Glenn Kotche collaborates with percussion maven Doug Perkins and

members of the Grammy® Award winning eighth blackbird in a concert featuring the

world premiere of Kotche’s, “The Haunted,” a piece written especially for this group.

An accomplished composer/performer, Kotche was i nspired to write “The Haunted” by

a visit to the notoriously eerie Sloss steel mills of Birmingham, Alabama. Kotche takes

the stage himself to perform “Mobile”, the title track from his solo album. Opening is

Lesley Flanigan who adds her own soprano voice to her handmade “speaker feedback

instruments.”

Je Parker-Nels Cline Quartet: The Turning Point •AUGUST 8Two musicians who move uidly between the world of rock

and jazz with complete authority and imagination present

an interpretation of Paul Bley and John Gilmore’s classic 1964

album, The Turning Point . Parker is a long-time member of

Chicago’s inuential post-rock band Tortoise, while Cline has

become the sharp-shooting guitarist for international favorite

Wilco. Both guitarists will be joined by drummer Frank Rosaly and

bassist Nate McBride.

Drummer, composer and bandleader Dana Hall celebrates the life and workof Chicago pianist and composer, Andrew Hill, one of the most important

innovators of jazz piano, with specially commissioned arrangements and

compositions. Joining Mr. Hall are pianist Orin Evans and Geof Bradeld;

Clark Sommers, acoustic bass; Justin Thomas, vibraphone; Nick

Mazzarella, alto sax; Russ Johnson, trumpet; and Jose Davila, tuba and
