While recently attending a workshop, I immediately got to understand that a former consultant of one
of the Big 5 Consulting Firms (B5CF) was speaking. To understand this, you don't need to be a CIA agent,
you just need to listen:
We B5CF bla-bla-bla... when I was with B5CF bla-bla-bla... During the nights we spent at the office of
B5CF to finish a report bla-bla-bla... The strategy bla-bla-bla ...
Well, the workshop was not about B5CF; just to clarify, a writer was presenting his new book and the
former B5CF was therefore sharing his thoughts and comments on it, along with those of other
distinguished guests. Nobody asked him where he worked before, but obviously it was important to
clarify this aspect. We were all impressed. At least, I was...
Well, after this passionate story about the glorious past, we got the final epilogue: the handsome young
manager (ex B5CF) looked at the audience and - challengingly and solemnly - stated as his witty
conclusion: "remember that at this time, in a garage somewhere in the world,
someone is inventing the future!" Silence in the audience. At that point I thought "in a
garage?" It is not possible! It is not credible. Doesn't innovation come from B5CF? What's happening?
Then I stopped for a little while and understood the message, the new strategy to be adopted. Ok, next
time that you want a new strategy, you will go to a garage, mine or my tire repairer's. The future is
