Must collect, label, and bag all evidence; Must sketch scene; Must fill out report 2) Examine and secure the scene (use yellow tape) and make evidence “tent cards”: a. Since crime scenes are worked from the outside in, place your first tent card next to the first piece of evidence (the evidence closest to the yellow tape). b. Take a picture of the evidence with the tent card right beside it. Depending on your camera and your teacher’s instructions, take or pretend to take the picture. c. Leave the evidence and the tent card. Do not pick up the tent card after you have taken the picture. d. The second piece of evidence you come to, place tent card number “2” next to it, take a picture of it, and leave it there. Work your way towards the center of the crime scene. Follow your teacher’s instructions about taking or pretending to take pictures, but do not touch the evidence.

3) Photograph the scene and all of the evidence after scene is photographed (make sure evidence is in place for sketch)

a. Photograph all angles of the scene including exits and entrances.b. Photograph individual pieces of evidence; use a ruler as a guide when

photographing small pieces of evidence.c. Email all photographs to [email protected]

4) Sketch the scene using measuring tools, graph paper, and rulers provideda. Begin measuring and sketching. The sketcher must get information from the

measurers before he or she can accurately draw the area. Choose a scale for your scene like 1 foot = 1 square.

b. When measuring, choose a non-movable object like a door or secure piece of furniture (lab bench) to take all measurements from.

c. Measure the length and the width of the room with the measuring tape. Find north and mark your sketch with the letter “N.”

d. Find the location of all the doors and windows (escape routes) and place them respectively on the graph paper.

e. Make a legend. The legend should include shapes that represent objects inside the crime scene. Example: a square shape could represent a chair and a rectangular shape could represent a desk.

f. Draw a letter beside each piece of physical evidence and identify what each letter stands for on the sketch. For example: A= bloody paperweight B = broken glass. Have this written out on your sketch or on a separate sheet of paper and attach it to your sketch.

g. Your final sketch should include (see rubric): Case Number, Date, Name of Victim, Address of Crime, Your Name, a Legend, N/S/E/W designations, Evidence, Body location, Room Measurements, Placement of Camera Angles (see below for partial example).

5) Collect and package all evidence using supplies found on lab bencha. Make sure to choose the appropriate container for each itemb. Large items may not be able to be collected but list them in final reportc. Have items photographer (see above) prior to packagingd. Label outside of container with evidence contentse. Place all packaged and labeled evidence inside your Case box.

6) Process all evidence and complete crime scene report individuallya. Put all packaged evidence into crime scene boxb. Label box with Case #c. Put all sketches (with names on each) in the boxd. Put final report for each member of the group in the box

7) Put away all supplies and clean up crime scene area
