Grading Practices


We believe that:

Students are individuals who learn differently and deserve to be given a fair opportunity to demonstrate their academic growth.

Grades should reflect knowledge of content and ability to apply relevant skills.

Grading policies should be consistent within a content area at each grade level.


Effort, Preparedness, Participation and Behavior:

- Will not be mathematically factored into a student’s grade with the exception of some Related Arts Courses

- Power School, email, phone calls, and conferences will be utilized to communicate with parents about these traits

- Rubrics, checklists, and/or other documentation should be created to measure, assess, and report these characteristics

Homework

- Will account for no more than 10% of grade

- Will be standardized by department and grade level, i.e., both grade level teachers must be aligned with how homework is graded

- Homework should not exceed 10 mins per grade level (i.e. 70 mins in 7th grade)

Lates/Zeros:

- Daily: Teachers may give zeros for homework/daily assignments - decisions to made at department/grade level and must be consistent with one another

- Projects: Late policies are to be developed by grade level/department partners and should be consistent (tiered system such as one grade lower per day)

**Parents should be notified on the second day an assignment is missing


Retakes: - Retakes will only be allowed for failing grades on major assessments, i.e., tests, exams, final essays

etc. *See 60% philosophy below (Think about GAME DAY!) - Projects can be improved upon within a reasonable time (agreed upon within grade level and department) - Exceptions only for extenuating circumstances and individualized plans 60% Philosophy: - Students who score less than a 60% on a major assessment and meet the teachers’ established

criteria for retakes (such as attending LEHP, making corrections, showing evidence of studying, etc.) may be given ONE retake to earn a grade of 60% maximum.

Grading Group Assignments: - Teachers will use a combination of individual and group grades - Every student should be responsible for handing something in as an individual to culminate the

assignment - Group work will be evaluated using a rubric - Behavior will be dealt with separately from the grade Extra Credit: -No individualized assignments to raise one student’s grade -Extra credit must be higher level work and made available to all students in the class -Extra Credit must be academic based, ex., no points for bringing in tissues, glue, etc. -Policies must be consistent within the grade level/department

Who We Are & What We Do

Non profit organization devoted to funding grants for items that nurture extraordinary educational experiences for every student in Millstone Township Public Schools, that are beyond the scope of the general school budget. Last school year, MTFEE awarded 10 grants totaling $19,831.67. Those grant awards included:

• Real Life Learning Lab – Primary School • Zoo On Wheels – Primary School • Bounce Ball Chairs – Primary & Elementary School • Keyboard & Tuners – Middle School • CRICUT Machine – Middle School • Drum Set – Middle School • Future Ready Classroom – Middle School • Brainology “Growth Mindset” Program – Middle School • Tower Garden Equipment – Middle School

Every child that matriculates through the school district will in some way benefit from an MTFEE funded grant.
