NSW Primary Schools Chess Competition 2016

SOUTHERN COUNTRY CHAMPIONS!

After successfully defending our title as Orange Zone Chess champions and then going to again win the

Western Region title for the 6th time in seven years, our championship team of Aiden Bird, Fergus Connick,

Scott McGoldrick and Mathew McKenna travelled to Yass last Thursday to play in the next stage of this

year’s competition. Due to having a bye for the quarter-final we progressed straight to the Country semi-

final against Illaroo Road Public School from Nowra. After a tense start, the boys were ahead 4-0 after the

first round and closed out the match 6.5 – 1.5. A resounding victory! We are now Southern Country Champi-

ons for 2016 and the most successful chess team that the school has ever had! Congratulations boys, a won-

derful effort, well done.

NSW COUNTRY FINALISTS

As a result of last Thursday’s win, our Championship Chess team travelled to Sydney on Monday for the

NSW Country Final. This final against Westport Public School from Port Macquarie was also an extremely

close game. After the first round the game score was 2 -2. However Westport PS was victorious in the end,

defeating MPS very closely 4.5 - 3.5. It really could have gone either way. It was a pleasure to accompany the

team on the day, and their attitude, concentration and sportsmanship can only be admired. A special thanks

to the parents, grandparents and staff (Mr Truloff and Mr Ross), who have given up their time to drive the

boys all around the region this year.

The team of Aiden Bird, Fergus Connick and Scott McGoldrick are off to Sydney again this Sunday for the

NSW One-Day Team Finals to be held at North Sydney Boys High. Another great success for our Chess play-

ers at MPS. Good luck boys!

THANKYOU MR CUMMINS!

Of course, we can’t mention Chess at Millthorpe Public School without thanking Joe Cummins who gives up

his time every week to lead our Chess Club at Millthorpe Public School. His expertise and passion for the

game is amazing and so appreciated by the students, staff and parents of the school.
