PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Marion McCarthy [email protected]

Parents in the Milton community continue to be among our greatest resources. On a

daily basis, parent volunteers give their time and skills to the school. You can find these

volunteers helping at Milton at all times of the day—from the Drop Off program in the morning

to the After School Enrichment program in the afternoon. Various other programs and events

such as Art in the Classroom, the Book Fair and Picture Day would not be possible without our

parent volunteers. You can find our volunteers serving pizza in the lunchroom, shelving books

in the library, making word cards at home or helping students choose a gift for Mom in the

Holiday Shop. We appreciate all who take time out of their busy lives to volunteer in our school.

We applaud our volunteers who are able to give generously of their time and talents.

Happy weekend!

PTO PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Kendra Latorre 973-507-9095 [email protected]

Family Fun Night, Milton’s largest fundraiser, is fast approaching! It will be held on

Friday, February 10, at the Chatham Middle School. Beth Caviness, Carol Delsandro, Denice

Donohoe, Kim Judd, Monica Schaefer, and Tara Stepanian have been putting a lot of time

into the planning of this fun evening. Advance ticket sales are going on now as is a poster

contest for our children (see attached flyers). Be sure to check out the list of items below that

have been donated for our Silent Auction!

Thank you to Ms. Bass and Nicole Kagan for a wonderful Third Grade Strings Concert

this week, and thank you to our custodians for turning the gym into a concert hall!

Thank you also to all our Library Volunteers who assist in Milton’s Library each

morning and afternoon.

Have a great weekend!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The school district budget season will soon be here, and Education Counts needs

volunteers to help spread the word about the school budget and vote. Education Counts is a

group of community members who have joined together to promote quality education in

Chatham by supporting public school funding. Milton Avenue School is in need of

representation. If you (and a friend) are interested in being the Milton liaison for Education

Counts, please contact Kendra Latorre.

This is a great way to volunteer a small amount of your time for a great cause.

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE

Kindergarten registration: Children who will be five years old by October 1, 2012 are

eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall.

Registration begins on Monday, January 30, until Friday, February 3. All paper work

should be returned between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Any questions regarding

registration, please call the school office at 973-457-2508 (press 2).

FROM THE NURSE'S DESK Jewel B. Barkley, School Nurse/Health Educator [email protected]

973-457-2508 (press 1)

Our overall illness rate for January has been remarkably good. Several students

suffered from a mild stomach virus, but they rebounded quickly and were eating a full diet and

feeling well the following day. A full day to recuperate following the stomach virus or a fever is

the policy from the BOE. There are also students with mild common cold symptoms but no

fever. Because the common cold is caused by a virus, the only real treatment is to take

medications to alleviate the symptoms. Please continue to encourage your children to cover their

mouth while coughing/sneezing and to wash their hands frequently with soap and water. If your

child continues to suffer from cold symptoms, even though they have no fever, please keep them

home to ensure more rest, fluid hydration and a quicker recovery.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in American. The American Heart

Association has designated Friday, February 3, as National Wear Red Day. Research shows

that 80 percent of cardiac events in women are linked to poor choices involving diet, exercise

and smoking. The good news is you can make the right choices to live a better, longer life!

Go Red BetterU is a 12-week online program to guide you towards your total optimal health

through small, simple choices. Also, there is an excellent video, "Women's Signs of a Heart

Attack," at www.GoRedForWomen.org.

THEME DAY – ONE WORLD, ONE DAY! Marty Visitacion [email protected]

Friday, March 30, Milton will be celebrating our multicultural theme day –

"One World, One Day”. We are inviting parents to present an interactive mini-lesson to our

students on that day. Volunteers will be needed from 8:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be

provided for all presenters.

Please email Mr. Visitacion by Friday, February 3, if you are interesting in participating.

Also, please indicate the country and culture you wish to represent.

We are looking forward to an exciting day with the students!

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY Jill Mills, Librarian [email protected] 973-457-2508 (press 4)

We have had a lot of fun these past few weeks exploring and enjoying award

winning authors and illustrators. The students have been creating their own illustrations in

the style of the art they’ve seen, and others have been retelling stories inspired by the books

we’ve read.

This year’s Caldecott medalist, for illustration, is Chris Raschka for A Ball for Daisy with

Blackout (John Rocco), Grandpa Green (Lane Smith), and Me . . . Jane (New Jersey’s own

Patrick McDonnell) as Caldecott honors. We will take a look at all of these books over the next

couple of weeks.

The Theodor Seuss Geisel medal, honoring books for early readers, was given to Josh

Schneider for Tales for Picky Eaters, a story I can’t wait to share with our kindergartners and

first graders. Winning an honor, his fourth time being recognized in this category, is Mo

Willems for I Broke My Trunk, an Elephant and Piggie book. These, and the others in this

category, will be added to our library collection!

The Siebert, for best informational book, was awarded to Melissa Sweet for Balloons

over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade. I shared this story with our

2nd

grade before this year’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The students then designed a balloon that

they would like to see in the parade!

The Newbery medal, for children’s fiction, went to Jack Gantos for Dead End in Norvelt,

a blend of autobiography and fiction. As is often the case with the Newbery medal, this year’s

winner was written for an older audience, and will not become part of our collection. I will take

the opportunity to introduce Jack Gantos as an award-winning author, and we will read from

some of his other books, meeting different characters of his.

I would like to give a great deal of thanks to the PTO for the two programs that are

bringing new books to our library this year. Between the Birthday Book Club and the Reading

Program, close to 300 new titles are being added to our collection. The books for the Reading

Program are multicultural selections, showing our students that reading really can take you

places!

READING TAKES YOU PLACES

Melina Stapfer-Crabtree 973-701-0430 [email protected]

Michele Lynch 973-701-0107 [email protected]

Great reading everyone! Ms. Zimmer’s class is still in the lead donating 1 book and

moving to Africa to the country of Mali. Mrs. Berger’s class is a close second traveling to India

and donating 1 book.

The following classes also donated 1 book each this week:

Mrs. Cook & Mrs. Shulman’s classes are both flying over Argentina

Ms. Del Pezzo & Mrs. Fanning’s classes are now both flying over Venezuela

Mrs. Melvin AM & Mrs. Trauger’s classes are both traveling to the island of Fiji

Mrs. Kurlak’s class is now flying over Japan

CONGRATULATIONS AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Please remember to put your full name, grade and teacher’s name on your reading

sheets! New reading sheets are available in the school library, from your child’s teacher, from

the PTO Reading Box in the front office or you can download a sheet from the Milton website.

"The Pressured Child"

Best-selling author Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D. will be returning to Chatham to

address how pressure is affecting our children, from elementary through high school, and what

parents can do about it.

This is a command appearance for Dr. Thompson in our community. It's a great program

to follow up the issues presented in the film, "Race to Nowhere", which many of you viewed.

The parent presentation is scheduled for Monday, January 30, at 7:00 p.m. at the high school.

Please see the attached flyer for more details.

plastic wrap, you may use ―Wrap n Mats‖. Instead of purchasing single bags of chips you can

purchase one large bag and use reusable plastic containers. Use lunch boxes instead of paper
