The first week of May is the tra-ditional observance of TeacherAppreciation Week, and it’s one ofthe easiest topics for me toaddress. I truly value and appreci-ate the work of the teachers andother professionals who are in ourschools helping our kids learn.

I think there is no higher callingthan to be a teacher. Some mistak-enly think that if you’re smart in asubject, you can teach. Whiledeep content knowledge helps agood teacher be better, teaching isa complex task. Successful teach-ers like to work with kids. Theyhave an understanding of childdevelopment and learning styles aswell as classroom management. They know how to develop lessonsfor today’s classrooms that offermultiple ways for students to showtheir learning. From writing stories,to putting together multi-mediaprojects, to dramatic reenactments— teachers meet kids where they

are and move them ahead to reachacademic goals.

But, it’s not just academics. Ourteachers also are there, alongsideparents and family members, help-ing children become better citi-zens; people who are ready tobecome the doctors and medicalprofessionals, civic and businessleaders, inventors and entrepre-neurs, carpenters and welders, andyes, teachers for tomorrow.

You can’t sugar coat it. Being ateacher in Wisconsin has beenpretty tough these past few years.Take-home pay has been cut. Thedecades-old system that providedthem a voice in their work environ-ment has been torn apart. Toomany have retired or left the pro-fession. Teachers have faced lotsof change and new demands ontheir time. And, the political back-drop in Madison has been exceed-ingly difficult. It’s no wonderresearch indicates that fewer highschool graduates want to go intoeducation.

But I am optimistic. The work of

an educator is heroic. Educatorschange lives. The work is alsorewarding. There’s no better feel-ing than seeing the spark in a stu-dent who’s mastered a new con-cept. Educators teach to all stu-dents and close achievement gaps.(more)

Teachers, I thank you for all thegood work that you do and saluteyou in every way possible. To theparents and citizens of Wisconsin, Iurge you to find time duringTeacher Appreciation Week, May4-8, 2015, to thank a teacherwho’s been influential in your life.Teachers make a difference.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I would like to inquire about thecost of mini implants. I actually just learned aboutthem after finding out I need a partial for 6 missingteeth in a row on my upper left. I am interested infinding out your mini implant prices withoutextractions, bone grafting, or X-Rays. How muchdifference in price is there from a three teeth bridgeto a 6-tooth bridge? Also, are your mini implantprocedures done the same day?

Dear Jean, mini-implants are not used for posteriorbridgework. The narrow diameter of the implant(1.8mm wide) and the hard chewing would lead tofailure of the mini-implants and the bridgework! There may be some dentists that are willing to do alarge bridge with mini-implants but that would neverbe done at Hampton Dental Associates. Againmaking a large bridge and anchoring it to very smallpins would lead to the bridge being pushed left andright during chewing. That is why the FDA hasapproved mini-implants for long-term use forretaining dentures and partial dentures.Another complicating factor is that the bone in the

upper jaw is not very dense compared to the lowerarch. Maxillary bone is like Styrofoam or balsa woodcompared to pine or oak in the lower jaw.

Mini--implants are used to retain dentures orpartials or to hold on to a single crown in the lowerfront of the mouth. Other than that you would requirea minimum of 3 implants for replacing 6 teeth. Iwould be happy to discuss traditional implantbridges, extractions, grafting and any other treatmentoptions if you wish to schedule a comprehensiveexamination and x-ray visit. Giving fees withoutseeing x-rays or examining your bite and adjacentteeth would be guessing as several factors go intocalculating the best treatment options. If you stillhave teeth in the upper arch and there are 6 teeth thatneed to be removed it is probable that there are issues

on the other side of the mouth as well that need tobe diagnosed and addressed. Sometimes implantoptions can be discussed to address all of yourproblems at one time. I am sorry you are havingproblems and are faced with tooth loss. Please takethe time to read my articles and view ourtestimonials at www.hamptondentalassociates.com

I put a lot of information on these pages to

educate our readers. Please read Upgradeable Dentistry Part II and III asthese will discuss mini-implants in much moredetail! Then call our office at 414-464-9021 toschedule your implant or mini-implant appointmenttoday!
