3. When you do hire a professional cleaner, askif it belongs to NADCA, a trade association of theHVAC inspection, maintenance and restoration indus-try. Its members have signed a Code of Ethics andinvested time and resources into industry-related train-ing and education. They also have general liabilityinsurance.

4. You should be aware that some non-NADCAcompanies use scare tactics and bait and switchmethods to squeeze money out of their clients or dontclean the HVAC system at all, let alone to the indus-trys standards.

How To Tell Youre Getting A Professional CleanerIs the company able to show proof of NADCA

membership and certification?Is the contractor willing to conduct a thorough

inspection of the HVAC system prior to per- formingany work and disclose any problems discovered?

Will the contractor clean the supply and return airductwork, the airstream side of the heat exchangerand the secondary heat exchanger?

After cleaning, are access panels properlysealed; blower blades and compartment clean andfree of oil, dust and debris? Point a flashlight into thecooling coil. Does light shine through? It should if thecoil is clean. Check to make sure the coil fins arestraight and evenly spaced and the coil drain pan isclean and that it is draining properly. Do the filters fitproperly and are they the proper efficiency recom-mended by the manufacturer?

history. Black History Month recognizesthem, and all African-Americans, for thecontributions they have made to Americanhistory.

February is Black History Month, a cel-ebration of the accomplishments of African-Americans, past and present. But it wasn't

always a month-long event. It began as anotion of just one man, Dr. Carter G.Woodson.

Born to former slaves James and Eliza,Woodson spent much of his childhoodworking in the coal m ines of Kentucky. Toobusy and too poor to attend school regu-larly, he taught himself the basics, enrolledin high school at age 20 and graduatedtwo years later. Woodson attended BereaCollege in Kentucky, and after just twoyears of study, graduated in 1901. Hewent on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard in1912.

During his studies Woodson made astartling discovery: There was very littlediscussion of African-Americans in

American history books and what littlethere was was often wrong. To correct thesituation, Woodson took steps to writeAfrican-Americans into the nation's history.He founded the Association for the Studyof Negro Life and History in Chicago onSeptember 9, 1915, and a year later, thepublication Journal of Negro History. In1926, he established Negro History Weekin February to focus national attention on

the contributions made by Americans to American history.

Why Woodson decided to holHistory Week in February is a great debate. Some say he did so the birthdays of Abraham LincFrederick Douglass. Others archose February in honor of thAmendment, which abolished Although the amendment was s

George Washington Carver was borninto slavery in Missouri sometime in the1860s. Through hard work and persever-ance, he would become one of this coun-try's greatest educators and researchers.

Forced to live on his own at a youngage after his mother was kidnapped byslave traders, Carver was an observer oflife and the world, developing an interest inplants. He managed to finish high schooland attend both Simpson College andIowa Agricultural College (now Iowa StateUniversity), earning a bachelor's and amaster's degree. While in college, Carvershowed his talents in many areas. He ledthe YMCA and the debate club, attainedthe highest student rank in the campus mili-

tary unit, published poetry and even had apair of paintings on display at the World'sFair in Chicago in 1893.

Carver's knowledge of plants was sothorough that he was asked to becomeIowa Agricultural College's first African-American faculty member in 1894. In1896, he joined Booker T. Washington atthe famed Tuskegee Institute and directedits agricultural research until his death in1943. Carver believed that researchshould have practical value and help peo-ple. He used the idea of agricultural exten-sion to benefit farmers in the South by tak-ing agricultural knowledge directly to themand their farms. While at Tuskegee, Carverdiscovered more than 300 products thatcould be made from peanuts and over 100from sweet potatoes and encouragedsouthern farmers to end their reliance oncotton and diversify with peanuts, sweetpotatoes and peas.

A winner of the prestigious SpingarnPrize, the highest award given by theNAACP, Carver took almost his entire life'ssavings and used it to start the GeorgeWashington Carver Foundation to continuehis work. He was buried on the campus ofTuskegee Institute, next to his friend BookerT. Washington. The recipient of many hon-ors before his death, Carver was honoredposthumously with special postage stampsand election to both the Hall of Fame ofGreat Americans and the NationalInventors Hall of Fame.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have heard about some newerdentures recently called CAD/CAM dentures. Do you dothese and what are the advantages of this type of denture?

Dear James, I have been at the forefront of denturetechnology for many years and currently lecture aboutdenture technology to other dentists. In our office weoffer Deluxe Turbyfill dentures, CAD/CAM denturesand standard economy dentures.

The differences between these types of dentures haveto do with the amount of time taken to make the dentures,the processing technique and the quality and type ofdenture teeth selected.

There are currently two types of CAD/CAM orcomputer aided design and computer aidedmanufacturing companies making dentures. One type ofdenture the Dentca denture is an extremely accuratelyfitting denture that can be fabricated in as few as twovisits. This technique involves taking a highly accurateimpression and bite registration at the first visit and thenat the second visit delivering the denture! An optionaltry-in appointment is also available. These dentures arebeautiful and extremely accurate. The advantage ofmilled dentures is that once the denture is designed it canbe remade in 2 days! The computer can simply print

another denture if one is ever lost. Patients must realizethat gum tissues can change so there may be a need toreline a reprinted set or take a new impression if gumchanges have occurred. The material that is used to printthe dentures is non-porous and remains color stablewithout incurring as much stain as traditional dentures aswell.

Turbyfill deluxe dentures can take 5-7 visits anddenture teeth are set with the patient present over a two-hour appointment. These are highly characterizedbeautiful dentures but now with a new computerdesigned denture we can make dentures in far fewervisits.
