Many people automat-ically think of drafty places in the homelike doorsills or older windows. It’s agreat idea to pay attention to these, butinsulation actually has a much greatereffect. Rather than a quick draft, poorinsulation is like a slow sieve, leakingenergy at every surface of your home.Fall is the perfect time to install more insu-lation in your home.

The first step is to find out how muchinsulation you actually have. Crawl up into your attic and look at the depth of theinsulation there. That can offer you a clueabout the quality of the rest of the insula-tion in your home. There are also numer-ous organizations that will come out anddo a home energy audit for you. Havingan energy audit is a good idea for anumber of reasons, including the fact thatit will reveal the quality of insulation inhard-to-check places like inside yourwalls.

These days, you’ve got severaloptions for home insulation. Most peoplethink of giant rolls of pink, and these rolls

or batts are still readily available. Madeof fiberglass or rock wool, they are easyto install and relatively cheap. They arealso cut to standard widths to fit betweenwall studs or floor joists in the ceiling.You might also look into professionalinstallation of loose-fill, rigid foam orfoam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insula-tion can be blown into place, making ituseful for odd-shaped places like roofs or
