Synthomer dispersions elevate your two-component (2k) waterproofing Cementitious waterproofing systems to protect mineral-based substrates inside and outsideCrucial in several contexts, e.g. building surface protection, water reservoirs, and swimming poolsSynthomer dispersions build a barrier against water on a membrane levelOur range contains various essential dispersions for your 2k cementitious waterproofing systems

Watertight barriers with polymer enhanced membranes Surface protection is needed to avoid water penetration into moisture sensitive substrates. It is also used to protect surfaces against migration of chemicals like de-icing salt in concrete or to secure critical substrates from attack by chlorine, acidic rain, carbon dioxide, etc.

TTo get a functional membrane (or protective coating) it is necessary to use a polymer which builds a polymer matrix in the membrane to form a very dense layer against liquids after curing. The elastomeric waterproofing coating maintains its flexibility under permanent immersion in water and when exposed to a wide variety of weather conditions. These systems can withstand extreme weather conditions andand climate changes (hot / cold, freezing, dry / wet). The coating is resistant to constant water contact and is used in cisterns as well as water tower storage tanks.

Such hydraulic setting surface protection systems can be split into three different categories:

Category 1: hard, for surfaces without any movements

Category 2: semi flexible with good flexibility and crack bridging performance

Category 3: highly flexible even at temperatures below 0°C, excellent low temperature elasticity and very good crack bridging performance

SSynthomer offers a broad range of specially developed XSBR-lattices (LIPATON SB) or acrylic dispersions (REVACRYL and PLEXTOL-brand) for all of this different applications.

Applications Typical applications for polymer modified cementitious waterproofing membranes are:

• surface protection of buildings• surface protection for reinforced and pre-stressed concrete •• lining of water reservoirs• waterproofing of balconies under tiles• waterproofing of cellars• underlayment for tiles in swimming pools• bathrooms • cisterns and water towers• showers and wet rooms

WWaterproofing for balconies and terraces, cellars and surface protectionThisThis application poses the highest demands on waterproofing. It must be able to resist the weather, be waterproof and provide some structural stability. Also, movements of the exterior construction parts are usually sufficiently large that it is necessary to use waterproofing systems with high crack bridging capabilities.

Waterproofing for tanks and pipesLeakingLeaking sewage pipes in wastewater treatment plants lead to considerable damage to the environment (e. g. soil, ground water) which is often discovered very late. When restoring such deterioration it is important to repair the different types of damage with waterproofing systems which are specifically adapted to the need. The failure analysis reveals if locally limited waterproofing of the leakageleakage is sufficient or if the entire surface of the tank or pipe has to be protected from chemical attack.

Waterproofing in cistern and drinking water towers / reservoirsIn areas for drinking water storage a drinking water approved system is mandatory. Some of our polymers are suitable for this type of application. These polymers need to have low odour, and no impact on the taste of the stored water. Furthermore the polymers need to fulfill the regulations of each individual country for contact with drinking water.

PProperties of polymer modified cementitious membranesThe use of Synthomer dispersions improves membrane properties like:

• water impermeability• water vapour permeability• reduction of gas permeability and protection of concrete (reinforcing steel) against carbonisation

• crack bridging• resistance against migration of chloride• low temperature flexibility• high wet strength• freeze thaw cycle and de-icing salt resistance• durability under consistent water contact

SomeSome Synthomer grades comply with drinking water regulations. Additional information on this topic can be requested from our Regulatory Affairs Department.

CompositionFlexibleFlexible cementitious coatings consist of two pre-mixed components. The powder component contains mainly quartz sand, cement, and various additives such as, thickener, hydrophobic agents etc. The liquid component consists mainly of a specially designed polymer dispersion with excellent cement compatibility. The liquid can also be modified with defoamer and other additives for optimum application papplication properties.

Typical ratio by weight of polymer dispersion and cement is 1:1 to 1.5 to 1. Higher amounts of the polymer improve properties like elongation, adhesion and waterproofing of the membrane. Increasing the amount of cement in the dry mixture results in a harder and less flexible membrane. Fine particle size fillers (e. g. calcium carbonate) give better tensile strength and elongation than coarse fillers like sand.

Meet the Synthomer binders for your 2k membranePreparation of the substrateAsAs with all coating systems, surface preparation is of prime importance. Remove all grease, oil, dust, residual curing compound, mould release agent or other contaminant that could impair adhesion. Laitance should preferably be removed by light sweep blasting or hydrojetting. Mechanical wire brushing may be appropriate for small areas.

TheThe surface must be solid, supportive, gypsum-free, absorbent and mostly level. Areas soiled with oil, grease or other separating layers have to be cleaned. Edges and lumps have to be broken; grooves have to be filled using a mortar. Lime plaster has to be removed. When salt efflorescence becomes visible the surface has to be treated with an approved salt binder. Before applying the flex sealingsealing slurry 2k, the substrate has to be pre-wetted thoroughly in order to achieve a slightly (not shiny) humid surface. Excess water has to be removed. For indoor sealing a primer has to be used before application of the slurry.

Mixing and applicationThe ready mix powder component should be mixed with the liquid using a slow speed mixer fitted with a suitable paddle. The homogenous mixture is normally applied to the substrate with a brush, roller or trowel in a minimum of 2 coats to reach a total thickness of minimum 2 mm. The first coat should be allowed to become touch dry before application of the second one. The consumption is approx. 3 3 kg/m² to achieve a dry layer of 2 mm. The colour of the mortar modified with Synthomer polymer dispersions may vary from brownish to grey. This will not affect the performance of the final membrane.

Synthomer polymers for 2k hydraulic setting systems (flexible concrete application)TheThe right polymer is key to develop qualified waterproofing materials. Therefore the Synthomer range contains different binders, which have been designed to offer specific advantages for producers of 2k membranes, including high tensile strength, good water and alkali resistance, as well as excellent crack bridging performance and elongation properties. These binders show excellent cement comcompatibility and offer a wide formulation latitude to the membrane producer.
