The Antenna Question

It’s Complicated:

How Much Space Should it Take?

What Kind of Antenna Should You Choose?

Should You use a Module with an Antenna Already Integrated?

8

The Antenna Question – How Much Space?

Typical Printed PCB Antennas Require

Lots of Space:

• Typically in the 25 mm x 15 mm Range

• Resulting in Large End Devices

• Sensitive to Detuning

9

The Antenna Question – What Kind Should I Choose?

Two Types of Chip Antennas:

• Antennas that are not coupled to the GND plane

and will require a relatively large clearance area

(or that is free from the ground, traces, and

components). Examples include monopole and

inverted –F type antennas.

• Antennas that are coupled to the GND plane and

require either a relatively small clearance area

beneath the antenna or don’t require clearance

area at all.

The Antenna Question – Should I Use a Module?

11

External Antennas and Housing Density

Choosing an External Antenna:

• Half of all IoT customers explore the possibility of

using an external antenna.

• Only 10 percent actually end up using one

Why?

• External antennas are not design-friendly

• Significantly increase BOM costs

• No efficiency gain with external antennas

• Only 10 percent actually end up using one
