Lent at Your Church in 2018
Lent started Wednesday, February 14, Ash Wednesday. As is our custom, we enjoyed a pancake supper and celebrated the Lord’s Supper around our dining tables. For the first time since 1945, Ash Wednesday fell on Valentine’s Day. The Season of Lent is a time when Christians are asked to examine their lives and take on disciplines to strengthen their faith, or give up habits that impede their faith. This year Presbyterians are encouraged to read Psalm 51:1-17 each day, and read it slowly, let the words sink in. Worshippers at Ash Wednesday received a sheet of paper with two versions of the reading. Their differences may make the psalm’s message clearer. As I look at the state of the congregation which I will soon be leaving, I think it’s best for the congregation and me to ex-amine what the situation of the congregation is as I prepare to move on. So, I will be preaching a series of sermons on different themes between February 18, when I preached on prayer, and March 18, the Sunday before Palm Sunday. By the time the newsletter reaches you, I will also have preached on our building. In March, my plan is to address the following themes in worship: March 4 – The Green Space March 11 – The Investment Fund March 18 – Mission I’m calling the series “The View from the Pulpit.” I am hopeful that this series will be bring some closure to my 19 years as your pastor. We’ve done a lot of amazing things together! See you in church, Pastor Tom

February 20, 2018 The Session met with the General Presbyter of the Winnebago Presbytery Sarah Moore-Nokes and Sue Buck, chair of the Winnebago Presbytery Commission on Ministry and Leslie Gunter, the Winnebago Presbytery staff coordinator of the Commission on Ministry to discuss both the dissolution process and the dynamics of the Church Family Forum. Five members were granted Letters of Transfer to First United Methodist Church in Oshkosh. We will have a Noisy Offering on March 18, 2018, to benefit Take Five, an organi-zation which provides clothes to Oshkosh Public School students who need them. We elected Gregg Zillges and Barbara Goldthwaite to be our representatives to Presbytery in 2018 and agreed to pay for their lunch from the operating budget when they go. We celebrated the points in the meeting when the Holy Spirit was moving among us and prayed for continued guidance as we move through the next several months.
February 25, 2018
The Session met with Sarah Moore-Nokes and Sue Buck after the Church Family Forum. The beginning of the meeting was spent reflecting on the feedback we received during the Church Family forum. We reviewed and approved a change to the proposed terms of dissolution. The Session called for a Congregational Meeting on March 11, 2018 immediately after service to:
Elect a Deacon
Vote on the dissolution of the relationship with Pastor Tom (and related terms)
We also scheduled another Session meeting for March 6, 2018 at 6:30p.m.
Committee Reports Deadline: Please submit committee reports to the office by
noon on March 13 to ensure inclusion in the March 20 Session packet.

Two Deacons prepare, serve and clean up for coffee hour each Sunday morn-ing. Our members enjoy this time to socialize over a cup of coffee and a vari-ety of delicious snacks.
Flower Delivery
Many members donate flowers each Sunday in honor or memory of a loved one. These beautiful flowers are often delivered to shut-ins, hospitalized members, or those having special needs or celebrations such as birthdays.
At the beginning of a 2-year term, each Deacon is assigned a few members who are considered "shut-in" and, due to health issues, are unable to participate actively in church. Deacons are requested to visit with their assigned person(s) monthly, or more often if needed.
At Easter and Christmas, Deacons deliver flowers to their shut-ins. Children in Sunday School often make gifts for our shut-ins. These items are well received and help to make a connection between our children and our older members.
Deacons perform vital and rewarding tasks around the church. People with tender, caring hearts make the best Deacons.
Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month, Ash Wednes-day, Maundy Thursday, Easter and Christmas Eve. Deacons prepare the communion elements for these occa-sions. Two Deacons help in preparing communion and all Deacons help to clean up following the service.

Kids’ Power Hour:
The lesson for March 4th is Exodus 20:1-17.
Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth genera-tion of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
One of the commandments says to work for only six days and rest on the seventh. Plan a special outing for one day this week (it doesn’t have to be Sunday) and try not to do any work for this entire day. Take time to rest.

Staff Update
We are sad to report that Suzette Curtis has ten-
dered her resignation. Her last day as Christian Edu-
cation Director will be March 5, 2018.
Suzette joined the First Presbyterian team in July of
2015. She was instrumental in bringing the current
Kids’ Power Hour curriculum to the children of our
church. She also re-introduced an after-school pro-
gram to the community with A.S.A.P.
Suzette’s exceptional organizational skills and dedication to the chil-
dren and youth of the church will be greatly missed. We wish her the
very best in wherever the Lord leads her next.

WE WANT YOUR IDEAS!
Thank you to those who submitted ideas during the month of February. We look forward to receiv-
ing more next month. Just a reminder that “New Idea” forms are available at the back of the sanc-
tuary and in the office. In addition to the specific committees, all ideas are sent to Session for
review on a monthly basis.
Idea Submitted: Action taken: Our church is 125 years old this year. This is an event that needs to
be celebrated. Idea sent to Membership Enrichment
We would like a sing-a-long of hymns.
Planned for the Fall (not a Packer game)
Include food “Sing and Eat”
We want old time hymns. Submitted by a group of 5 members.
Idea sent to Membership Enrichment and Worship
The traditional hymns are boring. They should express joy and praise and be upbeat. The black community has the right idea. This does not apply to the choir. Their selections are always enjoyable, as are the Christmas Carols.
Idea sent to Worship and Pastor Tom
Not my idea but I liked it and thought it had merit.
What about having a Sunday (or maybe more than one) to cel-
ebrate past confirmation classes? Like a confirmation class
reunion? It would be nice to bring back some of the people
that were once part of the church

Mix all ingredients until well blended. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets.
Bake about 20 minutes or until golden around edges. Remove from cookie sheet immediately and place on wire rack to cool.
These will freeze very well. You may add chocolate to the batter, if desired; or you may add cherries to the batter. Also good if dipped
in chocolate to cover. Cookies should be light gold all over, as well as edges; but do not let them get too brown. At other times of the
year, you may substitute flour for the potato starch.
