Presentation outline

• Objectives of the assessment

• Methodology

• Crop production outlook

• Livestock production outlook

Page 3: Ministry of Agriculture ,Mechanisation and Irrigation Development

Specific Objectives of the Assessment

To estimate yields and production of food and non food crops in

the country.

To identify areas of deficit/surplus in cereal production at district

and provincial levels.

To assess the situation of livestock as it relates to stock-feed

availability, grazing condition, water supply and disease

prevalence.

Page 4: Ministry of Agriculture ,Mechanisation and Irrigation Development

Second round crop and livestock assessment findings.

• Builds on results from the first round crop assessment

such as:-

– Area planted

– Crop stages and condition

– Rainfall season quality

– Crop input availability in as far as they influenced crop yields and

production this season.

Page 5: Ministry of Agriculture ,Mechanisation and Irrigation Development

• The exercise was conducted by a team made up of officers from the

Ministry of Agriculture, AGRITEX , LPD & Meteorological Services

Department.

– The assessment relied upon data collected by AGRITEX officers

based at ward level. (Structured questionnaires)

– The data was compiled at ward, district and provincial up to

national level.

– Data provides basis for estimating planted area and expected

yields .

– Provide insight into the current livestock situation.

Page 6: Ministry of Agriculture ,Mechanisation and Irrigation Development

METHODOLOGY • Verification done through field observations of crops, grazing condition,

water availability and livestock condition, farmer interviews.

• Farming households sampled from all farming wards and farming

sectors.

– 30 households per farming sector/ward,

– census if farming HH less than 30

• Essential adjustments to yields were made then agreed upon after the

field visits .

• Data collation , analysis and report writing done by national team with input

from district & provincial teams.
