What’s your spark?

A spark is very special. According to Search Institute, sparks are interests or passions a person carries within that light a fire in their lives. Spark expresses the core of who a person is and how they want to engage with the world around them. It’s what brings joy and hope.

Isn’t that beautiful? I recently rediscovered a TEDTalk by the social scientist Peter Benson. Peter was passionate about empowering youth to thrive. And he was certain that spark is a key factor. “Over the past few years, we’ve asked over seven thousand kids about what gives them joy and energy. What’s going on in those moments when life feels the richest and the fullest with purpose and hope. Their sparks fit into five categories: leading, learning a subject matter, service to the globe, athletics and the creative life.” Doesn’t that sound like 4-H? I often visit clubs, fairs and other 4-H learning experiences. On each visit, I see youth discovering and cultivating their sparks, fanning them into flames that burn bright and warm. And then when caring adults come around our youth to encourage and support those sparks? It’s almost like magic. Here are a couple recent examples.

Charlie, Gabe and Simon are cousins from Wright County. Along with Jessica of Sherburne County, they placed fourth in the National 4-H Avian Bowl, a highly respected knowledge competition. Learning the required subject matter so deeply was this team’s spark, according to their coach Mark. “They competed at a regional and state level to qualify for the national competition. They have been learning and preparing for years.” Briana participated in the 4-H Youth Teaching Youth program, where she learned to deliver lessons on internet safety, nutrition and other healthy living topics. 4-H staff gave Briana, from Washington County, the space and encouragement to explore her interests and discover what brought her joy. She’s now attending U of M Duluth, fanning her

spark for leadership as a pre-service elementary school teacher and 4-H afterschool volunteer. Briana said, “4-H made me realize how much of a passion I have for teaching.”

Great things happen when young people find their spark and have opportunities to let it grow with the support of caring adult champions. It happens every day in 4-H. And together, we can ensure it happens for every 4-H’er. What is your spark? I hope you are able to name your spark with confidence and pursue it with joy. Take some time this week and ask a young person what their spark is. I hope you will find a way to be that young person’s spark champion. Jennifer A. Skuza, PhD Minnesota 4-H state director

Raise your hand for Minnesota 4-H youth! National 4-H’s Raise Your Hand promotion is running through May 15. Minnesota 4-H alumni and friends are encouraged to visit 4-H.org/RaiseYourHand, fill out the form, and cast their vote for Minnesota to win up to $20,000! It only takes about 2 minutes of your time. Once you have raised you hand, encourage all 4-H alumni and friends to raise theirs. Use 4HOnline as a club or project leader 4HOnline offers an option for screened adult volunteers to have greater access to enrollment data for the club and/or project

they are responsible for leading. To access 4HOnline as a club manager, you must be enrolled as a screened adult volunteer in 4HOnline and be granted access by your county 4-H staff. Minnesota 4-H State Arts-In is a 22-day intensive arts experience. Youth prepare a musical to perform 3-4 times daily during the Minnesota State Fair. Each year, State Arts-In youth perform at least 35 shows to more than 12,000 audience members in the 4-H building on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. State Arts-In is about:

• Performing arts including singing, dancing, acting, instrumental accompaniment, costume design, set construction and technical work.

• Leadership, goal-setting and teamwork.

Participants continue to work on goals by putting on several daily performances, serving in leadership roles and acting as 4-H representatives to building visitors. Keep youth safe when participating in summer activities Summer provides great opportunities for 4-H clubs and groups to enjoy the outdoors through a variety of activities and outings. These activities may also involve varying levels of risk. Ensure 4-H members stay safe by utilizing the keeping youth safe resources: the risk management planning tool, guidelines and policies and individual information sheets. Note the following:

• All youth must be enrolled as 4-H members to participate in these activities and outings.

• Some activities are NOT allowed and some are only allowed if conducted by another entity. Check for these categories in guidelines and policies when planning for summer fun.

Note that special activities insurance must be taken out for some activities that are not covered by AIL Annual Group Accident insurance. These are noted in the guidelines. Work with your 4-H program coordinator to determine if special activities insurance is needed and for all your risk management questions.
