    RECAP: 1B Jesus Montero and DH Justin Ruggiano each homered and combined to drive in 3 runs as Tacoma won their 5th straight gwith a 5-1 over El Paso on Wednesday night. Montero (3x5, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) led the team with 3 hits, including hitting his 18th home ruthe season with a solo blast to lead off the 8th inning. Ruggiano  (1x5, R, HR, RBI) hit his 8th home season with a solo shot with 2 outs in3rd inning. After being promoted from AA Jackson prior to yesterday’s game, 3B D.J. Peterson  went 2-for-4 in his AAA debut withRainiers. C John Hicks (2x3, R, BB, SB) recorded the team’s only other multi-hit game.     ROY HOWELL TAKES OVER AS MANAGER: The Seattle Mariners announced that hitting coach Roy Howell would assume manag

    duties for the Jackson Generals for the remainder of the 2015 season beginning June 30. Jim Horner, who had managed Seattle’s Doubaffiliate since the beginning of last year, recently accepted an assistant coaching position at Washington State University. It marks the secoconsecutive season that Howell has taken over as manager for a Seattle affiliate. Last March, he replaced Rich Donnelly as the manageTriple-A Tacoma after Donnelly was named the Mariners’ third-base coach in Spring Training. He led the Rainiers to a 74-70 mark, and hisvictories were tied for the 9th-most by a manager in his first full season. Howell, in his 4th season with the Mariners organization, spent 2and 2013 with the High Desert Mavericks in the California League. His managerial resume includes three seasons at short-season Eug(2003-05), three seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the RWarriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the Pas a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02).
